The Villain's Karma System
Chapter 31: Remember My Name
"Now remember my name."
The voice echoed across Aetheris.
Kael couldn’t move.
For one terrible moment, everything around him seemed to disappear.
The broken academy.
The shattered sky.
The screaming students.
Leon.
Elena.
Mira.
Lucien.
Second.
Third.
Even the enormous entity hanging above the world.
None of it mattered.
Because the face staring down at him belonged to someone Kael had known.
Someone from his previous life.
Someone who had stood beside him in the white room.
The Selector.
Kael’s breathing became shallow.
"...You."
The figure smiled.
Not warmly.
Not cruelly.
Simply as though it had been waiting for those words.
"Yes."
Kael’s hands slowly curled into fists.
"You were the one who selected me."
"Among other things."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Don’t play games."
The figure’s smile faded.
"I’m not."
Pi suddenly moved.
The small creature’s body convulsed as the black mark on its back pulsed again.
Kael immediately turned.
"Pi!"
He rushed toward it.
The creature fell from the air.
Kael caught it before it struck the ground.
Its body felt strangely cold.
"Pi?"
No response.
Its golden eye remained completely white.
Its black eye had turned gold.
Kael shook it gently.
"Pi, wake up."
Nothing.
The figure above spoke again.
"Don’t."
Kael looked upward.
"Don’t what?"
"Don’t wake it."
Kael’s expression hardened.
"You’re the one doing this."
"No."
The answer came immediately.
"I am preventing something else from doing it."
Kael stared.
"Then remove the mark."
The figure didn’t respond.
"Remove it!"
The voice remained calm.
"I can’t."
Kael froze.
"You can’t?"
"No."
The figure looked toward the enormous entity in the sky.
"Because that mark isn’t mine."
A low rumble passed through the heavens.
The enormous entity shifted.
The countless lights across its body moved simultaneously.
The Selector looked upward.
For the first time—
fear appeared in its expression.
"Something has noticed that you’re awake."
Kael’s stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
The Selector looked directly at him.
"It means your memory is no longer safe."
Kael laughed bitterly.
"My memory hasn’t been safe since I woke up in this world."
"This is different."
The Selector raised one hand.
The air around Kael distorted.
For an instant, Kael saw countless images.
The white room.
The black door.
The First Tower.
The City of Names.
The First Story.
The academy.
His previous life.
Pi.
The Selector.
Then everything vanished.
Kael staggered.
"What did you just do?"
"I showed you the difference."
"Between what?"
"Remembering..."
The Selector paused.
"...and being remembered."
Kael’s expression changed.
"What?"
The Selector looked at Pi.
"You think you’re recovering your memories."
A faint sadness appeared in their eyes.
"But something else is recovering you."
Silence.
Kael looked down at Pi.
The little creature’s body remained motionless.
He carefully placed one hand against its head.
"Who?"
The Selector didn’t answer.
Kael looked upward.
"Who is remembering me?"
The enormous entity in the sky moved.
The pressure returned.
Aetheris groaned beneath their feet.
Lucien shouted from across the platform.
"Kael!"
Kael turned.
Lucien pointed toward the academy.
"Look!"
The walls of Aetheris were changing.
Ancient symbols were appearing across them.
The same symbols Kael had seen in the white void.
Crown.
Eye.
Broken chain.
Quill.
Then—
a fifth symbol.
A circle surrounding an empty space.
Lucien’s face went pale.
"I’ve seen that."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Where?"
Lucien stared at the symbol.
"In the ruins."
Kael stepped toward him.
"The ruins where you found the black book?"
"Yes."
Lucien adjusted his glasses with trembling fingers.
"It was carved into the chamber wall."
"You never mentioned it."
"I didn’t understand what it meant."
Lucien looked at Kael.
"Now I think I do."
"What?"
Lucien swallowed.
"The black book wasn’t the oldest thing in that ruin."
Kael’s expression darkened.
"What was?"
Lucien pointed at the symbol.
"That."
A violent tremor struck the academy.
Everyone stumbled.
Leon drove his sword into the ground to keep himself upright.
Mira grabbed a broken pillar.
Elena raised a barrier around them.
Second and Third remained strangely still.
Kael looked at them.
"You’re not surprised."
Second shook his head.
"We’ve seen that symbol before."
"Where?"
Second hesitated.
"On the door."
Kael’s heart sank.
"The white room?"
"No."
Second looked toward the sky.
"Before the white room."
Kael stared.
"What do you mean?"
Third finally spoke.
"We saw it before we became irregularities."
Kael turned toward him.
Third’s face was unusually serious.
"There was a place."
"What place?"
"We don’t know."
"That’s convenient."
"It wasn’t convenient."
Third’s eyes remained fixed on the symbol.
"It was empty."
Kael frowned.
"Empty?"
"No world. No story. No names."
Third’s voice became quieter.
"Only doors."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"How many?"
"Too many."
Second interrupted.
"And behind each door..."
He stopped.
Kael waited.
Second finally said:
"...someone was remembering."
Kael felt a chill.
"Who?"
Second looked at him.
"That’s the problem.
Aetheris shook again.
The enormous presence above them suddenly lowered.
The clouds were gone now.
The entity occupied the sky.
And beneath it—
the First Story began to emerge.
Not the Protagonist.
The Story itself.
White pages appeared in the air.
Thousands.
Millions.
They spiraled around the academy.
Characters appeared on them.
Scenes.
Events.
Names.
Some were familiar.
Others weren’t.
Kael saw Leon.
Mira.
Elena.
Lucien.
Second.
Third.
Pi.
Himself.
Then—
he saw something else.
A page with no character.
No name.
No description.
Only a single empty line.
The First Story Protagonist appeared beside it.
Its face remained blank.
"You see it."
Kael looked at the figure.
"See what?"
"The missing character."
Kael stared at the empty page.
"What does it mean?"
The Protagonist answered:
"It means someone was removed before the story began."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"Who?"
The Protagonist looked at him.
"You."
Silence.
Kael’s expression hardened.
"That’s impossible."
"No."
The Protagonist stepped closer.
"That’s why you’re dangerous."
Kael shook his head.
"I was never part of this world."
"Exactly."
The Protagonist pointed at the empty page.
"You weren’t removed from the story."
Its voice dropped.
"You were removed from the beginning."
Kael felt something twist inside his chest.
The Selector suddenly spoke.
"Don’t listen to it."
Kael looked upward.
The Selector’s expression had changed.
"Why?"
"Because it doesn’t understand what you are."
The Protagonist turned toward the Selector.
"And you do?"
The Selector didn’t answer.
The Protagonist laughed.
"You still refuse to tell him."
Kael looked between them.
"Tell me what?"
Neither spoke.
Kael’s patience snapped.
"Enough!"
The word echoed.
Karma threads burst from his body.
But this time—
they were different.
They weren’t golden.
They weren’t black.
They were completely colorless.
Kael stared at them.
"What..."
The System appeared.
[Unknown authority detected.]
[Host’s Karma structure has entered an unregistered state.]
[Attempting analysis.]
[Analysis failed.]
Kael looked at the Selector.
"Is this what you were talking about?"
The Selector shook their head.
"No."
"Then what is it?"
"I don’t know."
Kael stared.
The Selector smiled faintly.
"For once, I’m telling you the truth."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"You expect me to trust you?"
"No."
The Selector’s answer was immediate.
"I expect you to remember why you trusted me."
Kael froze.
A memory flashed.
His previous life.
Rain against a window.
His bedroom.
A book on the desk.
A strange voice.
A dream.
A white room.
The Selector standing across from him.
Young Kael asking:
"Why me?"
The Selector answering:
"Because you already found the door."
The memory vanished.
Kael staggered.
His hand went to his head.
"Again..."
Another memory appeared.
The Selector placing a hand on his shoulder.
Young Kael asking:
"What happens if I say no?"
The Selector answered:
"Nothing."
"Then why should I say yes?"
"Because you want another life."
Young Kael looked toward the black door.
Then at Pi.
Then at the Selector.
He smiled.
"Okay."
The memory shattered.
Kael returned to the present.
His eyes were wide.
He whispered:
"I agreed."
The Selector nodded.
"Yes."
"I agreed to return."
"Yes."
"I agreed to forget."
"Yes."
Kael’s expression became cold.
"Then why didn’t you tell me what I was agreeing to?"
The Selector’s eyes lowered.
"Because you wouldn’t have agreed."
Kael stared.
"So you lied."
"I withheld the truth."
"That’s still lying."
"I know."
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Kael laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
"At least you’re honest now."
The Selector looked at him.
"I’ve always been honest."
Kael’s expression hardened.
"No."
He pointed toward Pi.
"You told me I was being given another life."
"You were."
"You told me I would be safe if I forgot."
"I told you forgetting would make you harder to find."
Kael froze.
"You never said safe."
"No."
The Selector looked toward the sky.
"Because I knew you wouldn’t be."
The enormous entity moved.
The entire sky darkened
Its countless lights focused on Pi.
The Selector’s face became serious.
"It’s here for the Witness.
Kael tightened his grip around Pi.
"Then why did it say ’First’?"
The Selector didn’t answer.
Kael stepped closer.
"Why did it call me First?"
Still nothing.
"Why does it know my First Name?"
The Selector’s eyes narrowed.
"Because it remembers."
"Remembers what?"
The Selector finally looked directly at Kael.
"Your first choice."
Kael’s heart pounded.
"What was it?"
The Selector opened their mouth.
Then stopped.
The sky exploded.
A massive wave of pressure crashed over Aetheris.
The Selector disappeared.
"Wait!"
Kael reached toward them.
Too late.
The face in the sky vanished.
The enormous entity remained.
And the First Story Protagonist suddenly screamed.
Its blank face cracked.
A black line spread from its forehead to its chin.
Then another.
Then another.
The entire figure fractured.
Kael stared.
"What happened?"
Mira shouted:
"Kael!"
He turned.
The academy’s central tower was glowing.
The First Tower.
A doorway had appeared inside it.
And something was walking out.
A person.
Human.
At least—
it looked human.
Black hair.
Gray eyes.
A familiar face.
Kael’s expression changed.
"Second?"
Second turned.
His eyes widened.
"No."
The figure stepped from the tower.
It looked exactly like Second.
Same face.
Same height.
Same gray eyes.
But its expression was different.
Cold.
Empty.
It looked at Second.
Then smiled.
Second stepped backward.
"That’s impossible."
Third stared at the newcomer
For the first time since Kael had met him—
Third looked genuinely horrified.
"No."
The newcomer looked toward him.
"Hello, Third."
Third’s face went pale.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"You know each other."
The newcomer ignored him.
It looked at Second.
"You forgot me."
Second shook his head.
"I never knew you."
The newcomer smiled.
"You did."
It touched its own chest.
"I was there before you became Second."
Second’s breathing stopped.
Kael looked at Third.
"What is it?"
Third didn’t answer.
Kael grabbed his shoulder.
"Tell me."
Third whispered:
"It’s the one who named us."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"What?"
Third looked at him.
"The first irregularity."
Silence.
Second stared at the newcomer.
"No..."
The newcomer smiled.
Then the First Story Protagonist collapsed.
Its body dissolved into white fragments.
The enormous entity in the sky spoke.
"THE FIRST STORY HAS ENDED."
Kael looked upward.
The System appeared.
[WARNING.]
[First Story structural integrity: 0%.]
[First Story status: TERMINATED.]
Kael stared.
"Then it’s over?"
The System responded.
[No.]
A new line appeared.
[A narrative without a story has been detected.]
Kael’s eyes widened.
Another line followed.
[New structure forming.]
Then—
[Title: UNNAMED STORY.]
Kael’s blood ran cold.
The newcomer turned toward him.
Its gray eyes met his.
And for a moment—
Kael felt as though it was looking past his body.
Past Kael Veyron.
Past his memories.
Past the System.
Past his entire existence.
Then it smiled.
"You really don’t remember."
Kael raised his sword.
"Remember what?"
The newcomer took one step forward.
"That you weren’t the First."
Kael froze.
The newcomer smiled wider.
"You were the one who came before First."
The System flickered violently.
[CRITICAL ERROR.]
[Conceptual hierarchy contradiction.]
[First designation invalid.]
[Attempting correction...]
[Correction failed.]
Kael stared at the newcomer.
"What..."
The newcomer raised one hand.
Behind it, countless doors appeared.
Black.
White.
Silver.
Red.
Endless.
"You’re not the First."
It pointed at Kael.
"You’re the reason there was a First."
The world fell silent.
Pi slowly opened its eyes.
Its golden eye was no longer white.
Its black eye was no longer gold.
Both had returned to normal.
It looked up at Kael.
"Kael..."
He looked down.
Pi smiled faintly.
Then whispered:
"Run."
Kael’s expression changed.
"Why?"
Pi looked toward the countless doors.
"Because..."
Its voice trembled.
"...they’re all opening."
One door opened.
Then another.
Then another.
Across the sky.
Across the academy.
Across the world.
And from every doorway—
someone stepped through.
Some were human.
Some were monsters.
Some were things Kael couldn’t understand.
But every single one of them looked toward him.
Every single one.
And together—
they spoke.
"We remember you."
Kael stood frozen.
The System displayed one final notification.
[WORLDLINE STATUS UPDATED.]
[Current World: No longer classified as the original worldline.]
[Current Narrative: Unnamed.]
[Host’s identity: Unstable.]
[First Name: Still sealed.]
[Return Authority: Awakening.]
Then—
one final line appeared.
[New Main Mission Created.]
[MISSION: REMEMBER WHO YOU WERE]
[Objective: Discover the identity that existed before "First."]
[Reward: Unknown.]
[Failure: Unknown.]
[Special condition:]
[If someone else remembers first...]
The System paused.
Then the fnal words appeared.
[...they may become you.]
Kael stared at the countless beings approaching through the opened doors.
His grip tightened around his sword.
For the first time since waking in the body of Kael Veyron—
he wasn’t afraid of dying.
He was afraid of something far worse.
That somewhere inside all these forgotten memories...
there was a version of himself he had deliberately chosen to erase.
And now-
that version was coming back.
