The Villain's Karma System

Chapter 37: The Ending That Never Ended

  • Next Chapter

The world was ending.

Again.

Kael stood in the middle of the collapsing courtyard, Pi clutched against his chest, while pieces of Aetheris Academy floated around them.

Stone.

Magic.

Fragments of towers.

Entire sections of classrooms.

Everything had begun falling upward.

That was the first thing Kael noticed.

Not downward.

Upward.

Broken pieces of the academy rose toward the shattered sky as though gravity had simply forgotten which direction it was supposed to obey.

Kael stared.

"...That’s new."

Leon looked at him.

"You’re remarkably calm."

"I’ve reached the point where I’m running out of appropriate reactions."

A massive chunk of marble flew past his head.

Kael ducked.

"See?"

Mira stared at the sky.

"This isn’t natural."

"Nothing that has happened to us recently has been natural."

"No."

Mira shook her head.

"I mean this literally isn’t happening in physical space."

Kael’s expression changed.

"What?"

Mira raised her hand.

A tiny spatial circle appeared.

Then immediately collapsed.

Her eyes widened.

"I can’t establish distance."

Kael looked around.

The academy seemed to stretch endlessly.

A tower that had been fifty meters away was suddenly several kilometers in the distance.

Then—

it was right beside them.

Leon frowned.

"We’re moving."

"No."

Mira shook her head.

"The world is."

Kael looked upward.

The countless eyes beyond the shattered sky were no longer simply watching.

They were moving.

Slowly.

Each enormous eye rotated independently.

Searching.

Observing.

Looking through layers of reality.

Then—

one stopped.

Directly above Kael.

His Karma threads suddenly pulled tight.

SNAP.

Kael stumbled.

Pi growled.

"Pi!"

Kael looked at the thread.

It wasn’t golden anymore.

It had become black.

And it stretched upward.

Into the eye.

Kael’s expression hardened.

"So that’s how you’re watching me."

The System appeared.

[Foreign observation detected.]

[Observation vector identified.]

[Source: Unknown.]

[Attempting severance.]

[Failure.]

[Host’s Karma connection is being observed.]

[Warning.]

[If observation continues, Host may become permanently visible to external authorities.]

Kael stared at the notification.

"How permanent?"

The System paused.

[Permanent.]

Kael sighed.

"Wonderful."

Leon raised his sword.

"Can you break it?"

"I don’t know."

"Then try."

Kael looked at him.

"You say that like I haven’t been trying to break impossible things since I arrived here."

Leon smiled.

"Hasn’t stopped you yet."

Kael grinned.

"Fair."

He reached toward the black Karma thread.

His fingers touched it.

Instantly—

pain exploded through his mind.

Kael staggered.

A vision appeared.

Aetheris.

But not the current Aetheris.

Aetheris at the end.

The academy was burning.

The sky was red.

Millions of black threads stretched between buildings.

Students were running.

People were screaming.

And Kael—

was standing in the center.

Alone.

No Leon.

No Mira.

No Elena.

No Lucien.

No Pi.

Everyone was gone.

A figure stood before him.

The First Story.

But it was different.

There was no white robe.

No faceless mask.

No word written across its face.

It looked human.

It looked tired.

It looked—

sad.

"You’re late."

Kael stared.

"What happened?"

The First Story looked behind him.

"They’re coming."

"Who?"

The sky cracked.

The countless eyes appeared.

The First Story whispered—

"The ones outside."

Kael looked upward.

The eyes opened.

And the vision ended.

Kael returned to reality.

He dropped to one knee.

Elena immediately grabbed him.

"Kael!"

He breathed heavily.

"I’m okay."

"You keep saying that."

"Because I’m trying to convince myself."

Mira crouched beside him.

"What did you see?"

Kael hesitated.

"The first ending."

Everyone became silent.

Second suddenly appeared.

"Tell me."

Kael looked at him.

"You know something."

Second’s expression remained serious.

"I know enough."

"Then talk."

Second glanced toward the sky.

"Not here."

"Why?"

"Because they’re listening."

Everyone froze.

Kael looked upward.

The enormous eye was still there.

Watching.

Second continued.

"The external authorities aren’t interested in this world."

He pointed toward Kael.

"They’re interested in you."

Kael frowned.

"Why?"

Second’s eyes narrowed.

"Because you are the only person who remembers an ending that hasn’t happened yet."

Kael’s blood ran cold.

"What?"

Third appeared behind Second.

"It’s worse than that."

Kael looked at him.

Third’s expression was unusually serious.

"The ending isn’t coming."

Kael stared.

"Then what is happening?"

Third answered—

"It’s already here."

A deep rumble passed through the academy.

The sky flickered.

For half a second—

the ruined academy vanished.

Then returned.

Kael saw something different in those missing seconds.

A completed world.

No destruction.

No monsters.

No broken academy.

People were walking through the streets.

Students were laughing.

Teachers were teaching.

Everything was peaceful.

Then—

it vanished.

Kael stared.

"What was that?"

Mira’s face was pale.

"A preserved state."

Lucien corrected her.

"No."

He stared at the space where the vision had appeared.

"A rejected state."

Kael looked at him.

"Rejected by what?"

Lucien shook his head.

"The world."

Silence.

Then the System appeared.

[Worldline instability increasing.]

[Current worldline: 29% integrity.]

[Previous worldline detected.]

[Previous worldline integrity: 100%.]

[Status: ENDED.]

[Warning.]

[Previous worldline is attempting restoration.]

Kael’s eyes widened.

"Restoration?"

Mira stood.

"You’re saying the old world is trying to come back?"

"Apparently."

Leon looked around.

"What happens if it does?"

Kael looked at the System.

The answer appeared.

[Two endings cannot occupy the same worldline.]

[Conflict inevitable.]

[Potential outcome: Worldline collapse.]

Kael stared.

"That sounds bad."

Lucien nodded.

"It is."

Kael looked around.

"How much time?"

The System responded.

[Unknown.]

Kael sighed.

"I really hate that word."

Pi tugged on his coat.

"Pi."

Kael looked down.

Pi was pointing toward the academy.

Specifically—

toward the ruins of the First Tower.

Kael followed the gesture.

A door stood there.

A simple wooden door.

It hadn’t been there before.

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"No."

Pi pointed again.

"Pi."

"No."

"Pi!"

Kael sighed.

"Fine."

He started walking.

Leon followed.

Mira followed Leon.

Elena followed Mira.

Lucien followed Elena.

Kael stopped.

"Why is everyone following me?"

Leon smiled.

"You said we’re going to the door."

"I didn’t.

"You were walking toward it."

"That doesn’t mean anything."

Mira raised an eyebrow.

"It usually does."

Kael sighed.

"Fine."

They reached the door.

Second immediately stopped.

"Don’t open it."

Kael turned.

"Why?"

Second’s expression was grim.

"That’s the door from the first ending."

Kael stared at it.

"You’re sure?"

"Yes."

Third approached.

"It’s older than the First Story."

Kael placed his hand on the handle.

"Then what’s behind it?"

Second shook his head.

"You don’t want to know."

Kael smiled.

"That’s usually when I want to know the most."

He opened the door.

The world disappeared

Kael found himself standing in a hallway.

White walls.

Black floor.

No ceiling.

No doors.

No sound.

He turned.

His comanions were gone.

"Leon?"

No answer.

"Mira?"

Nothing.

"Elena?"

Silence.

"Pi?"

Kael looked down.

Pi was gone.

His expression hardened.

"System."

No response.

"System."

Nothing.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"You’re kidding."

For the first time since receiving the Karma System—

he was alone without it.

He began walking.

His footsteps echoed.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then—

a voice spoke behind him.

"You always come here alone."

Kael turned.

Nobody.

The voice continued.

"You always think you can fix everything yourself."

Kael looked around.

"Show yourself."

A figure appeared at the end of the corridor.

Kael’s heart stopped.

It was him.

Not the Fifth.

Not the other Kael.

This version looked older.

His hair was longer.

His clothes were torn.

His face was covered with small scars.

And his eyes—

were empty.

Kael stared.

"Who are you?"

The figure smiled.

"You."

Kael shook his head.

"No."

"Yes."

"I’ve met enough alternate versions of myself."

The other Kael laughed.

"Then you should recognize me."

Kael stared.

Something felt different.

This wasn’t another possibility.

This wasn’t a memory.

This was-

the Kael who had reached the first ending.

The failed Kael.

The one who had lost everyone.

Kael’s expression hardened.

"You failed."

The other Kael’s smile disappeared.

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"Everything."

"How?"

The other Kael stepped closer.

"I trusted the wrong person."

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

The other Kael didn’t answer.

Instead—

he asked a question.

"Do you remember who killed them?"

Kael froze.

The First Story.

The Author.

The sky entity.

The masked entities.

Fourth.

The Fifth.

None of the names felt right.

The other Kael smiled.

"You don’t."

Kael clenched his fists.

"Then tell me."

"I can’t."

"Another rule?"

"No."

The other Kael pointed toward Kael’s chest.

"Your memory hasn’t reached that point."

Kael looked down.

A faint golden light was glowing beneath his skin.

78%.

Memory Recovery.

The other Kael stepped closer.

"When it reaches 80%..."

Kael looked up.

"What happens?"

"You’ll remember the person."

"What person?"

"The one who killed everyone."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"And when I remember?"

The other Kael smiled.

"You’ll hate them."

Kael stared.

"Who are they?"

The other Kael leaned closer.

"You."

Silence.

Kael’s face went blank.

"What?"

"You killed them."

Kael stopped backward.

"No."

"You did."

"No."

"You made the choice."

"I would never—"

The other Kael interrupted.

"You already did."

The hallway shook.

The walls began cracking.

Kael felt something approaching.

The other Kael smiled sadly.

"That’s why you came back."

Kael looked at him.

"To stop myself?"

"No."

The other Kael’s expression became serious.

"To decide whether you deserve another chance."

The hallway shattered.

Kael returned to the courtyard.

He fell forward.

Elena caught him.

"Kael!"

He gasped.

Leon grabbed his shoulder.

"What happened?"

Kael looked around.

Everyone was there.

Pi was sitting on his shoulder.

The System was back.

He touched his chest.

79%.

Mira stared at him.

"You were gone for three seconds."

Kael looked at her.

"Three seconds?"

She nodded.

"Three."

Kael looked toward the door.

It was gone.

Second approached.

"What did you see?"

Kael hesitated.

Then—

"I saw the first ending."

Second’s face tightened.

"And?"

Kael looked upward.

The countless eyes were still watching.

"I saw myself."

Third asked—

"Which one?"

Kael’s expression became cold.

"The one who failed."

Silence.

Then the System appeared.

[Memory Recovery: 79% → 80%]

[Milestone reached.]

[Hidden memory access granted.]

[Identity restriction partially removed.]

[Host may now remember the one responsible for the first ending.]

[Warning.]

[Recovered memory may conflict with current identity.]

Kael stared at the notification.

He wsn’t ready.

He knew that.

But he had learned something.

He didn’t have the luxury of waiting.

He closed his eyes.

"Show me."

The System responded.

[Beginning Memory Recovery.]

Darkness.

Then—

light.

Kael saw a city.

Not burning.

Alive.

People walked through the streets.

Children played.

Magic floated through the air.

Aetheris Academy stood proudly in the distance.

Leon was there.

Mira.

Elena.

Lucien.

Pi.

Everyone.

They were alive.

Happy.

Kael smiled.

Then he heard his own voice.

"We did it."

Someone stood beside him.

Kael couldn’t see their face.

"No."

Kael turned.

"We survived."

The unknown person looked at him.

"That’s different."

Kael frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The person reached toward him.

And then—

Kael saw it.

The world behind them.

A massive black door.

Covered in the same symbols.

Crown.

Eye.

Broken chain.

Quill.

The person whispered—

"You promised me you would open it."

Kael’s eyes widened.

The memory shattered.

He was thrown back into reality.

His eyes snapped open.

He was breathing heavily.

Elena was beside him.

"What did you see?"

Kael didn’t answer.

Because he finally understood.

The first ending wasn’t the destruction of the world.

It wasn’t everyone dying.

That had happened later.

The true first ending—

was a choice.

A door.

A promise.

And someone standing beside him.

Someone whose face—

was still hidden.

Kael looked toward the black sky.

The countless eyes suddenly closed.

One by one.

Then—

a single message appeared.

Not from the System.

Written directly across the sky.

YOU ARE REMEMBERING TOO MUCH.

Kael stared.

The message changed.

STOP.

Then—

OR WE WILL REMEMBER FOR YOU.

Kael’s expression hardened.

He stepped forward.

"Try."

The sky went completely white.

Every eye opened simultaneously.

And the world—

ended.

For exactly one second.

Then it restarted.

Kael remained standing.

Everyone else—

was gone.

The academy was gone.

The city was gone.

The sky was gone.

Only Kael remained.

And in front of him—

stood the person from the memory.

Their face was still hidden.

But this time—

they spoke.

"Hello again."

Kael stared.

The stranger smiled.

"You finally remembered the first ending."

A pause.

"Now..."

The stranger extended a hand.

"...let’s remember why you killed me."

Kael’s eyes widened.

And somewhere far beyond the world—

the Author opened the black book.
