The Villain's Karma System
Chapter 38: The Person I Killed
Silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
This silence had weight.
It pressed against Kael’s ears until even his own breathing sounded distant.
He stood alone.
Aetheris was gone.
The academy.
The city.
The sky.
Leon.
Elena.
Mira.
Lucien.
Second.
Third.
Pi.
Everything had disappeared.
There was only an endless white space.
And the stranger standing several meters before him.
Kael stared at the outstretched hand.
"Let’s remember why you killed me."
Those words echoed through his mind.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Kael’s expression slowly hardened.
"I didn’t kill you."
The stranger’s smile faded.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"You don’t remember."
"That doesn’t mean I did it."
The stranger tilted their head.
"Interesting."
Kael narrowed his eyes.
"What’s interesting?"
"You still defend yourself before asking who I am."
Kael almost laughed.
"I’ve had enough mysterious people appear in front of me to know that introductions usually come with terrible news."
The stranger chuckled.
"You’re still sarcastic."
"You’re still avoiding the question."
A pause.
Then-
the stranger lowered their hand.
"Good."
Kael frowned.
"Good?"
"You haven’t changed completely."
Kael crossed his arms.
"Could we skip the cryptic nonsense?"
"No."
"Of course."
The stranger looked around the empty white space.
"Do you know where we are?"
Kael glanced around.
"The White room."
"Wrong."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"The white room before the white room."
"Closer."
"The place before the story."
The stranger nodded.
"Yes."
Kael looked at the empty space.
"This is where I was selected."
"No."
Kael frowned.
"This is where I agreed to return."
"No."
The stranger’s eyes seemed to darken.
"This is where you made the decision that caused everything."
Kael’s expression changed.
"What decision?"
The stranger pointed toward the darkness behind him.
A black door appeared.
Kael’s breathing stopped.
The same door.
Crown.
Eye.
Broken chain.
Quill.
The symbols glowed faintly.
But there was something different.
One symbol had been added.
A circle.
Four points.
Kael stared.
"The Fifth."
The stranger shook their head.
"No."
"Then what?"
"The consequence."
Kael stepped closer.
"The consequence of what?"
The stranger looked at him.
"Of refusing the ending."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"You keep talking about the ending."
"Because you keep trying to escape it."
"What ending?"
"The one you created."
Kael’s jaw tightened.
"I didn’t create the destruction."
"No."
The stranger stepped toward the door.
"You created something much worse."
Kael followed.
"What?"
The stranger placed a hand on the black door.
"Hope."
The door opened.
Kael’s eyes widened.
Behind it—
was the city from his memory.
Alive.
Peaceful.
Aetheris stood proudly in the distance.
Students walked through the streets.
Magic illuminated the sky.
Leon was laughing.
Mira was arguing with him about something.
Elena was standing beside Lucien.
Pi was chasing something across the grass.
Kael stared.
"They’re alive."
The stranger nodded.
"This was the ending you wanted."
Kael’s heart tightened.
"Then why did it fail?"
The stranger looked at him.
"Because it wasn’t real."
Kael frowned.
"What?"
"Look closer."
Kael stepped through the doorway.
The moment his foot touched the ground—
the world flickered.
A student walking past him suddenly froze.
His face disappeared.
Then returned.
A building changed shape.
A tree became a tower.
The sky turned black for half a second.
Then everything returned to normal.
Kael’s expression hardened.
"This isn’t a world."
"No."
"It’s a memory."
"No."
"A possibility."
"No."
Kael turned.
"Then what is it?"
The stranger answered.
"A lie."
The world froze.
Everyone stopped moving.
Leon.
Mira.
Elena.
Lucien.
Pi.
All of them.
Kael walked toward Leon.
"Leon?"
No response.
He waved a hand in front of his face.
Nothing.
Kael looked at the stranger.
"You made this?"
"No."
"Then who?"
"You."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"What?"
The stranger stepped beside him.
"You made this world because you couldn’t accept the other one."
Kael stared at Leon.
The frozen figure.
"You created a world where everyone survived."
"Yes."
"Then why would I destroy it?"
The stranger looked at him.
"Because you realized it was fake."
Kael’s expression slowly changed.
A memory surfaced.
He was standing in this exact place.
Older.
Exhausted.
His friends were alive.
But something was wrong.
He had noticed.
Small things.
Mira had forgotten a conversation.
Elena remembered an event that had never happened.
Leon had no memory of his childhood.
Lucien had forgotten his own name.
Pi couldn’t remember where it came from.
Kael had known.
The world was wrong.
He had created a perfect ending—
but perfection had become a cage.
The memory continued.
Kael stood before the black door.
The stranger was beside him.
"Open it."
Kael shook his head.
"If I do, this world disappears."
"Yes."
"Everyone disappears."
"Yes."
Kael looked toward his friends.
"Then I won’t."
The stranger smiled.
"You always say that."
Kael stared.
"What changed?"
The stranger’s smile vanished.
"You remembered the promise."
Kael’s chest tightened.
"What promise?"
The stranger looked at him.
"That you would never save them with a lie."
Kael froze.
The memory shattered.
He returned to the white room.
His breathing was heavy.
The stranger stood before him.
"You killed me."
Kael shook his head.
"No."
"You destroyed the world."
"Yes."
"You killed everyone."
Kael’s hands tightened.
"...Yes."
"You killed me."
Kael looked up.
"No."
The stranger smiled.
"You finally understand."
Kael frowned.
"I didn’t kill you."
"No."
The stranger stepped closer.
"You killed the version of me that existed in that world."
Kael’s eyes widened.
The stranger placed a hand against their chest.
"And that’s why I survived."
Kael stared.
"You’re..."
"A remnant."
Kael remembered the Fifth.
The failed worlds.
The black book.
The remnants that survived endings.
"You were there."
"Yes."
"In the first ending."
"Yes."
"You survived."
"Yes."
Kael’s expression hardened.
"Then why blame me?"
The stranger’s eyes softened.
"Because you promised you’d come back."
Kael froze.
"You promised me."
The stranger’s voice trembled for the first time.
"And you never did."
Kael’s mind raced.
"Who are you?"
The stranger reached up.
Their fingers touched the mask covering their face.
Then—
slowly—
they removed it.
Kael stared.
His world went silent.
The face beneath the mask was familiar.
Not because it was another version of Kael.
Because he had seen it before.
In the photograph.
The photograph from his previous-life room.
The people he couldn’t remember.
The people who had stood beside him before the story.
One of them.
A person he had promised not to forget.
Kael whispered—
"...You."
The stranger smiled sadly.
"Yes."
Kael’s chest tightened.
"I know you."
"You should."
"I’ve seen you."
"Many times."
"In the photograph."
"Yes."
"You were..."
Kael stopped.
The memory was there.
Almost.
He could feel the name.
But it remained just beyond reach.
The System appeared.
[Memory Recovery: 80%]
[Attempting personal designation recovery...]
[Failure.]
[Identity protected.]
[Reason: Host’s own restriction.]
Kael stared.
"Again?"
The stranger laughed softly.
"You really did make this difficult."
Kael looked at them.
"Why did I seal your name?"
The stranger’s expression changed.
"Because you were afraid."
"Of you?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Of yourself."
Kael frowned.
The stranger stepped closer.
"You knew that if you remembered my name, you’d remember everything."
"Everything about what?"
"About the first ending."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Then tell me."
"I can’t."
Kael sighed.
"Of course."
"Not because of a rule."
The stranger pointed toward the sky.
"Because they’re listening."
Kael looked upward.
The white space above them was beginning to crack.
Tiny black lines appeared across it.
One.
Two.
Ten.
Hundreds.
The stranger’s expression became serious.
"They found us."
Kael looked around.
"Who?"
"The same thing that has been watching you."
The countless eyes appeared beyond the cracks.
But this time—
they weren’t observing.
They were entering.
One enormous eye pushed through the white space.
Then another.
Then another.
Kael raised his hand.
Karma threads erupted around him.
Golden light filled the room.
The stranger stepped backward.
"Don’t."
Kael looked at them.
"Why?"
"Your Karma can’t fight them."
"Then what can?"
The stranger pointed toward Kael’s chest.
"The Return Authority."
Kael froze.
"My Return Authority?"
"Yes."
"I barely understand it."
"You don’t need to."
The stranger looked at him.
"You just need to remember why it exists."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because you weren’t supposed to return alone."
The words struck him.
"What?"
The stranger stepped forward.
"You were supposed to bring something back."
Kael stared.
"What?"
The stranger smiled.
"You."
Kael’s expression became confused.
"I don’t understand."
"You returned with your memories sealed."
"Yes."
"You returned with your identity changed."
"Yes."
"You returned with the System."
"Yes."
"You returned with Pi."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"And..."
The stranger looked toward him.
"...you returned with the part of yourself that refused to die."
Silence.
Kael remembered.
Pi.
The white room.
The silver key.
The Fifth.
The countless doors.
The other Kaels.
Everything connected.
Pi hadn’t merely been a companion.
Pi had been carrying something.
A piece of Kael.
A piece that had survived the ending.
Kael looked down.
"Pi."
The stranger nodded.
"Pi remembers."
Kael’s heart tightened.
"That’s why Pi knew me before I came here."
"Yes."
"That’s why Pi knew the Fifth."
"Yes."
"That’s why Pi said ’Before.’"
"Yes."
Kael stared.
"Then why didn’t Pi tell me?"
The stranger smiled.
"Because Pi was waiting for you to remember."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Waiting for what?"
The stranger answered softly.
"For you to become yourself again."
The white room shook.
The cracks in reality widened.
The enormous eyes moved closer.
The stranger looked toward them.
"We don’t have much time."
Kael raised his hand.
"Wait."
The stranger stopped.
Kael stared at them.
"Are you the person I promised to save?"
The stranger’s expression became sad.
"No."
Kael froze.
"Then who?"
The stranger looked toward the black door.
"You."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"Me?"
"The promise wasn’t to save someone else."
The stranger smiled.
"You promised to save yourself."
Kael’s mind went blank.
The stranger continued.
"Not your body."
"Not your memories."
"Not your life."
"Your choice."
Kael stared.
"You were afraid that one day you’d become exactly what you hated."
The stranger’s voice became softer.
"So you made a promise."
Kael whispered—
"What promise?"
The stranger answered.
"If I ever return..."
A pause.
"I will choose again."
Kael’s eyes widened.
The memory returned.
Young Kael standing before the black door.
The Selector beside him.
Pi at his feet.
The Fifth behind him.
The city burning.
His friends disappearing.
And Kael—
crying.
Not from fear.
From anger.
He had looked toward the door.
"I don’t care how many times it takes."
"I don’t care what I become."
"I’ll return."
Then—
"And next time..."
He had smiled.
"I’ll choose them."
The memory ended.
Kael stood frozen.
Tears threatened his eyes.
Not because he was sad.
Because he finally remembered.
The reason he had returned wasn’t simply to change the ending.
It was because the person he had become at the end—
had stopped choosing.
He had was obsessed with saving the world.
He had sacrificed his own identity.
His own happiness.
His own choice.
He had become nothing but a solution.
So he had made a promise.
A promise to himself.
Choose again.
The stranger smiled.
"Now you understand."
Kael looked up.
The countless eyes had nearly filled the white room.
He clenched his fists.
"So that’s what Return Authority is."
The stranger nodded.
"It isn’t the power to return."
Kael’s eyes sharpened.
"It’s the power to choose again."
"Yes."
The System appeared
[Hidden Truth recognized.]
[Return Authority has evolved.]
RETURN AUTHORITY — PHASE I
Effect:
Host may reject a predetermined outcome that has already occurred.
Restriction:
The Host must consciously choose an alternative.
Warning:
Every rejected ending creates instability.
Kael stared at the ability.
Then smiled.
"Finally."
The stranger looked at him.
"You’re going to do it?"
Kael raised his hand.
Golden Karma threads spread across the white room.
"No."
The stranger’s eyes widened.
Kael smiled.
"I’m going to do something better."
He looked toward the countless eyes.
"I’m going to make a choice they didn’t expect."
The eyes suddenly focused on him.
Kael felt thousands of foreign authorities pressing against his existence.
The System screamed.
[WARNING.]
[External authorities attempting narrative overwrite.]
[Host identity destabilizing.]
[80%...]
[79%...]
[78%...]
Kael gritted his teeth.
His identity began slipping.
Kael Veyron.
The Failed Villain.
The one Outside the Story.
First.
Returned.
All of them began overlapping.
The stranger shouted—
"KAEL!"
Kael looked toward them.
"What?"
"Choose!"
Kael closed his eyes.
He remembered Duke Alaric.
Elena.
Leon.
Mira.
Lucien.
Pi.
Sir Gareth.
Aetheris.
His strange missions.
His stupid jokes.
His failures.
His victories.
Every person he had met since arriving.
He remembered being Kael Veyron.
Not because the story told him to be.
Because he had chosen to be.
Kael opened his eyes.
"I choose..."
The white room shook.
"...myself."
The System exploded with light.
[RETURN AUTHORITY ACTIVATED.]
[Predetermined outcome identified.]
[Outcome: HOST WILL BE ERASED.]
[Rejected.]
[Alternative outcome selected.]
[HOST WILL REMAIN.]
[Cost detected.]
[One memory must be surrendered.]
Kael froze.
"What?"
The stranger’s expression changed.
"Kael..."
A notification appeared.
[Select one memory to surrender.]
[The choice cannot be undone.]
Kael stared at the options appearing before him.
His childhood.
His previous life.
His first meeting with Pi.
His memory of the Selector.
His memory of Aetheris.
His memory of Elena.
His memory of Leon.
His memory of Mira.
His memory of the first ending.
His memory of—
The list continued.
Kael’s face became pale.
The stranger stepped forward.
"Don’t choose yet."
Kael looked at them.
"Why?"
"Because there’s another option."
"What?"
The stranger smiled.
"You can surrender the memory of yourself."
Kael’s eyes widened.
The System went silent.
The countless eyes beyond the white room opened wider.
The stranger whispered—
"If you do that..."
"You can become something none of them can predict."
Kael stared.
Then slowly—
he smiled.
"Absolutely not."
The stranger blinked.
"What?"
Kael laughed.
"I’m done letting mysterious people convince me that losing myself is somehow the smart option."
The stranger stared.
Then smiled.
"Good."
Kael looked toward the System.
"I’ll choose another."
A final option appeared.
[Unlisted Memory.]
[Description: The memory you were never supposed to recover.]
[Warning: This memory is connected to the origin of the System.]
Kael’s smile disappeared.
"The origin of the System..."
The stranger’s expression became serious.
"Don’t."
Kael looked at them.
"Why?"
"Because once you remember that..."
The stranger looked toward the countless eyes.
"...they won’t be able to control what you become."
Kael stared at the option.
Then-
he selected it.
[Memory Selected.]
The white room shattered.
The stranger screamed.
The countless eyes closed.
And Kael saw—
the beginning.
Not of the world.
Not of the story.
Not of the Author.
But of the System.
A white room.
A young Kael.
A black door.
And someone sitting behind a desk.
Someone Kael had never seen before.
The person looked up.
Smiled.
And said—
"Welcome, Kael."
Kael’s eyes widened.
Because for the first time—
he recognized the voice.
It wasn’t the Author.
It wasn’t the Selector.
It wasn’t Fourth.
It wasn’t the Fifth.
It wasn’t the System.
It was—
his own.
The memory ended.
Kael opened his eyes.
The white room was gone.
Aetheris had returned.
Leon was standing beside him.
Elena was holding his arm.
Mira was staring at him.
Lucien looked terrified.
Second and Third were nowhere to be seen.
Pi was sitting on his shoulder.
And the System appeared.
[Memory Recovery: 80% → 91%]
[Return Authority: 28% → 43%]
[Identity Stability: 100%]
[Origin Memory: PARTIALLY RECOVERED.]
[System Origin: UNKNOWN.]
[Warning.]
[Host has remembered something the System itself does not remember.]
Kael stared at the final message.
Then—
a new notification appeared.
[SPECIAL MISSION UNLOCKED]
FIND THE FIRST USER
Objective: Discover who used the Karma System before Kael Veyron.
Reward: Unknown.
Failure: Unknown.
Warning:
The First User may still be alive.
Kael’s expression became completely serious.
Then Pi whispered into his ear.
"Kael."
He looked down.
Pi pointed toward the academy.
Toward the First Tower.
A figure stood there.
Black cloak.
Silver mask.
Crimson eyes.
The Observer.
But this time—
the Observer wasn’t looking at Kael.
It was looking at the System.
And for the first time since Kael had met him—
the Observer looked terrified.
"Kael..."
The masked figure’s voice trembled.
"Whatever you just remembered..."
A pause.
"...forget it."
Kael stared.
The Observer slowly raised one hand.
Behind him—
the sky began turning black again.
"You just remembered the one thing..."
His crimson eyes widened.
"...that even I was afraid to see."
Kael smiled faintly.
"Then I guess..."
His Karma threads began glowing.
"...I finally remembered something important."
The Observer whispered—
"No."
"You remembered who was using you."
Kael’s smile disappeared.
And somewhere beyond reality—
a black book opened by itself.
On its first blank page, a single sentence appeared.
THE FIRST USER HAS BEEN FOUND.
Then another sentence formed beneath it.
AND HE IS NOT KAEL.
