Chapter 152: Chapter 152: Preparing to Cancel the Engagement

Having already experienced college life before, Chloe York wasn’t particularly excited about it. Most of the time, she’d attend class when she had one, and when she didn’t, she’d opt to stay home, lie around, and play on her phone.

In her previous life, she had to work part-time jobs. But in this life, she already had so much money that she didn’t need to at all.

What she hadn’t expected, however, was that Brooke York had chosen the same major as her. The two of them were now classmates.

"Chloe York, I told you I’m the real heiress of the York Family. Even if you temporarily stole my place, you still had to give it back. Look at you now. You exhausted yourself to get into Southbend University, but I got in with ease. So no matter what you do, you’ll never be better than me."

Brooke York sat smugly beside Chloe York. She now seized every opportunity to flaunt her presence and assert her superiority in front of Chloe.

"Who’s competing with you? I’m just doing my best to live the life I want. Who has the time to compare themselves to you all day long?" 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

"You’re not competing with me? I don’t believe you!"

Brooke York refused to believe that Chloe York wasn’t competing with her in the slightest.

’If I hadn’t come back, Chloe York would still be the York family’s heiress, and her life would be completely different. So she must be filled with envy, jealousy, and hatred for me. She must be competing with me.’

’Otherwise, why would someone who used to get zeros on every test suddenly become so brilliant and even get into Southbend University? She must be trying to change Mr. and Mrs. York’s impression of her. She still wants to come back to the York Family and be the rightful heiress.’

’I’ll never give her that chance. I’m the only real heiress of the York Family. As for Chloe York, I’ll make sure she goes right back where she came from. It would be best if she had to live the kind of life I used to.’

As Brooke fumed, Chloe York glanced up at her. Her gaze was calm and tranquil, showing no surprise or displeasure, as if she were looking at a stranger.

She had no desire to get involved with Brooke York and just wanted to pay attention in class. But Brooke was relentless, her smug expression deepening as she decided that Chloe was only acting cold to hide her jealousy.

"I know, you’ve always thought you were so impressive, getting into Southbend University all on your own. A big deal, right? But what about now? I’ve set foot in Southbend University, too. We’re students at the same school, sitting in the same classroom. Your hard work looks like a joke."

She deliberately puffed out her chest, emphasizing her status. The sense of superiority in her eyes was practically overflowing. "Don’t forget, I’m the rightful, true heiress of the York Family. My admission to Southbend was meticulously arranged by the family, with the best resources and the best preparations. I could easily reach the same place as you. And you? You just crammed your way in by brute force. We’re not in the same league at all."

"I’ve never been inferior to you—not in the York Family, and not here at Southbend University." Brooke York stared at Chloe York, every word dripping with provocation. "Anything you have, I can have. Anything you work your butt off to get, I can obtain with ease."

"Don’t think getting into Southbend makes you so special. In my eyes, you’re still that outsider with no one to dote on you, no one to love you, and no one to rely on. Even at the same university, you can’t compare to me, the true heiress of the York Family."

Brooke York gave Chloe York no chance to speak, repeatedly emphasizing that she was the true heiress, that Chloe was nothing, and that Chloe couldn’t compare to her in any way.

Hearing this long-winded monologue, Chloe felt her ears begin to itch. She’d never realized before just how repetitive Brooke York could be. Saying some things once was enough; repeating them over and over just made them sound hollow.

"If you’re so confident, why do you need to keep repeating that you’re the true heiress of the York Family? I don’t recall anyone telling you that you weren’t. So why do you keep telling me over and over? What are you trying to prove by repeating it? Is it because you feel insecure, so you need to constantly remind me to confirm your status as the Yorks’ true heiress?"

"What are you trying to say? Chloe York, do I need you to validate me?"

Brooke York lost control of her volume, and in an instant, the entire classroom turned to look at them.

The professor at the front of the room also looked displeased.

"Some students may not want to be in class, but they shouldn’t disturb the others." The professor on the podium fixed her gaze directly on Brooke York.

The professor wasn’t talking about Chloe York, but Brooke York. After all, Chloe was the top scorer on the college entrance exam, while Brooke had been talking ever since class began. The professor had also noticed that it was mostly Brooke trying to drag Chloe into a conversation, while Chloe had barely paid her any mind.

Meeting the professor’s gaze, Brooke York knew she was the one being called out and felt a little embarrassed.

She immediately fell silent. She could feel the eyes of her classmates on her, and Brooke was instantly certain that Chloe York had set her up.

This made Brooke even angrier. ’How did Chloe York get so clever and cunning?’

Without Brooke York chattering in her ear, Chloe York could finally have some peace and focus on the lecture. For the rest of the class, Brooke didn’t try to speak to her again.

As soon as class ended, unable to bear the occasional glances from her classmates, a humiliated Brooke York quickly left the classroom. She felt she had made a complete fool of herself and wanted to escape the embarrassing scene as fast as possible.

「The weekend arrived before she knew it.」

Chloe York decided to pay a visit to the Prescott Family. She needed to resolve the matter of the engagement; otherwise, having it hanging over her head always felt awkward.

Before going, Chloe York gave Sophia Quinn a call. She was worried they might be busy or unavailable, and showing up at their home unannounced would be a bit intrusive.

When Sophia Quinn and Miss Prescott heard that Chloe York was coming to visit that weekend, they were overjoyed and immediately began instructing the staff to prepare Chloe’s favorite dishes.

Miss Prescott specifically reminded Sophia Quinn not to tell Ethan Prescott. Since Ethan didn’t come home every weekend, she was afraid Chloe would be unhappy if she saw him and think they had tipped him off to try and force them to bond.

Sophia Quinn agreed. "Don’t worry, Mom, I get it. I absolutely will not tell that brat Ethan Prescott."

"Good! That’s settled then. Make sure you give the staff detailed instructions, too. Have them prepare more of the food Chloe likes. That poor girl has been living all by herself at Southbend University; she must not be eating well."

"Okay, I know, Mom. I already think of Chloe as my own daughter. Besides, this is the first time she’s ever called to say she’s coming over!"
