Mr. Rockwell chimed in.

"He never does any honest work, just loafs around all day. And he just has to court death with that ridiculous car racing, making the whole family worry sick. I might as well not have a grandson like him!"

"I heard he started working at Evan’s company."

"Only Evan would be willing to hire him! A guy like that, taking someone’s money... I’m embarrassed just thinking about it! Jasper and Evan were born in the same year, but look at the gap between them. Forget ten months, Jasper couldn’t catch up even if he had ten years."

Silas Rockwell thought, ’Grandpa, isn’t that a little harsh? He’s your own grandson, have a heart! As his older brother, even my face hurts just listening.’

Silas Rockwell really wished this game would go on forever.

But it was obvious Uncle Fairchild had timed his visit perfectly.

"Uncle, what brings you to Rockwellburg?" he asked proactively, afraid Evan Fairchild would see that something was amiss.

"I was in the area for business, so I thought I’d drop by and see Mr. Rockwell."

"Have you seen Evan yet?"

"I plan to. You all were together the whole day, weren’t you?"

"Yes, we just had dinner together."

"Was Melody Monroe there too?"

"She was." Silas Rockwell took a quiet breath. ’Here comes the important part!’

"I saw Shawn Fisher was around today too. I thought he might also come see Mr. Rockwell, but I didn’t see him come over with you."

’That was a sharp turn, wasn’t it?’

’Why didn’t he keep asking about Melody Monroe? Why switch to Shawn Fisher?’

"He was in a hurry to get back to Jansburg. After all, he’s a family man now. Sweetie is still little, and Candy has school."

"He didn’t have dinner with you all?"

"No."

Evan Fairchild smiled and picked up his tea. ’Shawn Fisher, ruled out,’ he thought.

’Then again, Shawn Fisher wouldn’t do something like this anyway.’

"Did your grandfather really kick Jasper out?"

All the prepared lines in Silas Rockwell’s mind were now useless.

’First Shawn Fisher, now Jasper... Uncle Fairchild doesn’t play by the book.’

"He has a small apartment of his own. He rushed back right after dinner. If he’d known you were coming, Uncle, I would’ve brought him back with me. Should I give him a call and have him come over now?"

"No, no, that’s not necessary. I just haven’t seen him in a while. It’s too late to call him over. Did he go back by himself?"

"Yes."

Evan Fairchild lifted his teacup, the corner of his mouth curving into a faint smile. ’Jasper Rockwell, ruled out.’

Suddenly, Silas Rockwell’s heart clenched. ’This is bad! I tried so hard to cover all the bases, but I missed this!’

Evan Fairchild sipped his tea with a smile, asking no more questions.

As far as he knew, Melody Monroe had gone to dinner with them.

Shawn Fisher hadn’t gone. Silas Rockwell had come back alone, and Jasper had also left alone.

He only knew what time their dinner ended. Based on his calculations, Silas Rockwell’s arrival time at home was just right, leaving no time to have taken Melody Monroe home.

That meant the one who took Melody Monroe home had to be Evan.

"Mr. Rockwell, I won’t be staying at the Rockwell residence tonight. It’s not often I get to Rockwellburg, and since Evan is also here, I’ll go see him. I have to head back to Argent early tomorrow morning."
