"You don’t remember me? We met at Tristone Hospital. I even asked you for directions," the eccentric man reminded her with a smile.

Rosalind Green finally remembered. "Oh, it’s you!" she said, pleasantly surprised. "What a coincidence."

The eccentric man gave a small smile, but inwardly he was ecstatic. ’This is no coincidence,’ he thought. ’It’s a match made in heaven. Our fated connection is so deep we’d find each other even if separated by mountains and rivers.’

Will couldn’t take it anymore. He nudged his boss’s hand. If the man squeezed any harder, Will’s hand was sure to break. But the nudge did more harm than good; the eccentric boss just gripped his hand even tighter. Will covered his mouth to stifle a cry of pain and turned his back, shedding a tear in solitude.

’If I’d known she was the one the boss had his eye on, I never would have been drooling over her,’ he lamented. ’A buddy’s girl is off-limits. I can’t even let myself think about the boss’s woman!’

"Please, come in and sit for a while," the eccentric man said, putting on an air of utmost respectability. "June, make some tea for our guest." He quietly sucked in his breath, trying to flatten his potbelly.

He was, however, a little vexed. ’I came out without a hat or even combing my hair,’ he thought. ’I’m not wearing my overcoat or leather shoes. I wonder if the scar on my face will scare her?’

’Maybe I should have that Clayton Xavier fellow whip up some Seven Snow Ointment for me. It’s about time I got rid of this scar.’

"I can’t stay, I’m afraid. Someone is waiting for me," Rosalind Green said politely.

"Then come by next time." The eccentric man wasn’t disappointed. ’I’ve found her again,’ he thought. ’Whether she stays for a visit is a minor detail. Besides, I can always go and find her.’

Rosalind Green gave a slight smile. "Alright. See you around."

"See you."

The man’s serious demeanor didn’t arouse any suspicion in Rosalind Green. She just took him for an upstanding, decent fellow and actually formed a rather good impression of him.

Even the menacing scar on his face didn’t frighten Rosalind Green. Under Phoebe Huxley’s influence, she had grown much braver—she even dared to kill chickens now. Just a few days ago, she had successfully butchered one, gutting and defeathering it herself. While she wasn’t as deft as Phoebe Huxley, it was a world of difference from the delicate woman she used to be, who wouldn’t even dare to swat a mosquito. The Rosalind Green of today had truly undergone a fundamental transformation.

Besides, after all the hardships she had been through over the years, Rosalind Green’s perspective had subtly changed.

The old Rosalind Green had a love for all beautiful things, and that included men. A major reason she had been willing to marry Ethan Hawthorne was his handsome exterior. He was suave, debonair, and dashingly handsome, and she had been captivated from the moment they first met. If Ethan Hawthorne had been just a little more ordinary-looking, she might not have agreed to his proposal so easily back then.

In her youth, Rosalind Green had read *The Hunchback of Notre-Dame*. The character who left the deepest impression on her was the protagonist, Quasimodo. He was one-eyed, hunchbacked, and had a speech impediment—an ugly monster everyone feared on sight, yet he possessed a kind heart.

While reading the book, Rosalind Green’s biggest regret was wondering why the author hadn’t made the protagonist handsome and tall. She wished he could have been dashing like Mr. Darcy from *Pride and Prejudice*, winning the beautiful heroine’s hand and finding happiness in the end. That would have made for a truly wonderful romance novel.

As a young girl, she read a great many foreign novels. Her father, Mr. Green, was a middle school teacher, and the school library still allowed students to check out foreign classics back then. Rosalind Green had her father borrow many for her, and she would lose herself in their pages every day. Her absolute favorite was *Pride and Prejudice*, because its hero and heroine were flawless and its ending was so wonderful.

She reread it countless times, and with each reading, she would wonder where her own Mr. Darcy was. What would he be like? Would he be as handsome and wealthy as Darcy, and come from a good family?

That was precisely why her heart had skipped a beat the moment she met Ethan Hawthorne. She just knew: he was her Mr. Darcy.
