Chapter 114: Chapter 114: Founder’s ball VIII

For one impossibly quiet heartbeat...

Damian Blackwood found himself unable to answer.

His gaze remained fixed on the hand Vivienne had offered him.

It was a simple invitation.

A single dance.

Nothing more.

Yet his thoughts refused to settle.

Julian’s words returned with unsettling clarity.

"Three thousand students disagree."

He hadn’t forgotten.

Not even for a moment.

If he accepted...

The whispers would spread before the music had even begun.

People would misunderstand.

Anthony would inevitably hear of it.

His cousin.

Vivienne’s fiancé.

Anthony had never cared for gossip.

But he cared about propriety.

An engagement between two noble houses was not something either family could simply disregard.

The consequences would be... inconvenient, at the very least.

Only moments ago, Julian had warned him to keep his distance.

To stop giving people reasons to talk.

To remember what the rest of the Academy already believed.

And yet...

Another gentleman had approached Vivienne.

Asked her for the dance.

Before Damian had even realized what he was doing...

He had crossed the ballroom.

Now he stood before the consequence of that single, thoughtless decision.

He should refuse.

It was the sensible choice.

The logical one.

...

...

Slowly, his eyes lifted from her hand to her face.

Vivienne was still smiling.

Not impatiently.

Not expectantly.

She simply waited.

There wasn’t the slightest hint of doubt in her expression.

As though it had never once occurred to her that he might decline.

The realization settled over him with quiet certainty.

He couldn’t.

He couldn’t refuse her.

He wasn’t entirely sure when that had become true.

Only that it was.

A slow breath escaped him.

With the effortless grace expected of the heir of House Blackwood, Damian stepped back and bowed.

When he straightened, he extended his gloved hand toward her.

"Lady Beaumont."

The faintest smile softened his composed expression.

"May I have the honor of this dance?"

Vivienne blinked.

Then her smile brightened.

"I thought I was the one asking."

"You were."

"Then why are you asking me now?"

"So I may answer properly."

For the briefest moment, amusement danced across her features.

"Well..."

She placed her hand in his.

"You may."

The instant her fingers settled against his...

He noticed.

Not because he intended to.

Simply because there was nothing else to notice.

Her hand rested comfortably within his own.

Unexpectedly so.

His fingers closed gently around hers.

Warm.

Light.

Natural.

A perfectly ordinary observation.

And yet...

It lingered.

The orchestra began to play.

Damian offered his arm.

Vivienne stepped closer.

For the first time in either of their lives...

They stood in a proper dancing hold.

His hand came to rest lightly at her waist.

Her free hand settled upon his shoulder.

Closer.

Far closer than they had ever been.

Neither of them spoke.

There seemed little reason to.

The opening measures of the waltz carried them forward.

Step.

Turn.

Glide.

The years of etiquette lessons that had shaped them since childhood revealed themselves effortlessly.

There was no hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Their movements found one another almost immediately, as though the dance had been waiting for them rather than the other way around.

Damian guided.

Vivienne followed.

Not cautiously.

Not because she lacked confidence.

Simply...

Because she trusted him.

Completely.

The realization passed through him so quietly he almost missed it.

She never questioned where he led.

Never hesitated before a turn.

Never glanced toward the floor.

She simply looked at him.

And smiled.

He returned it before he realized he had.

The ballroom continued to revolve around them.

Elegant gowns swept across polished marble.

Crystal chandeliers scattered warm light over the dancers.

The orchestra filled every corner of the hall.

Yet, little by little...

The sounds seemed farther away.

His attention settled elsewhere.

Golden-blonde curls, left loose beneath the elegant half-up arrangement of her hair, swayed gently with each turn. Beneath the chandeliers, the strands caught the light so effortlessly that they seemed almost spun from gold.

The emerald silk of her gown shimmered with every graceful movement.

Her hand remained steady in his.

Comfortable.

Familiar.

He found himself aware of its warmth even through their gloves.

Another turn.

Their eyes met.

She smiled again.

Not because etiquette required it.

Not because she wished to appear graceful before the ballroom.

She simply looked...

Happy.

Happy to be dancing with him.

The thought lingered longer than it should have.

Another turn.

The music swelled.

Without intending to, Damian became aware of his own heartbeat.

Not racing.

Not uneven.

Simply...

Present.

Curiously so.

Each time she looked at him, he noticed it.

Each time their steps carried them closer before another turn, he noticed it again.

He searched for an explanation.

Found none.

Another turn.

The ballroom had nearly vanished.

Julian’s warning.

Anthony.

The whispers.

The watching eyes.

They had all faded somewhere between the opening measures and now.

There was only the music.

Only the rhythm beneath their feet.

Only Vivienne.

She moved with effortless grace, following every step as though she had always known where he intended to lead.

And for reasons he couldn’t explain...

He found himself hoping the song would last just a little longer.

One more turn.

One more measure.

One more moment.

The final notes echoed through the ballroom.

The waltz came to its gentle conclusion.

They stopped together.

Neither having missed a single step.

Applause rose around them.

The sound drew Damian back to himself.

The ballroom returned all at once.

Voices.

Lights.

Students.

Reality.

Slowly, he released the hand he had been holding.

It felt...

Unexpectedly soon.

He had thought the dance would be enough.

Instead...

The music had ended.

Yet he had wished for one more verse.

One more turn.

One more moment.

His thoughts retraced the evening with startling precision.

He had crossed an entire ballroom because another man had asked her to dance.

He had ignored every warning Julian had given him.

He had accepted despite knowing exactly what people would say.

And for the duration of a single waltz...

He had forgotten every one of those concerns.

His gaze found Vivienne once more.

She was still smiling.

Still looking at him.

Waiting for him to say something.

The answer came with startling clarity.

Not because he searched for it.

But because there was no longer any other explanation left.

He had not been treating Vivienne Beaumont as merely a childhood friend.

Not for quite some time.

...

That...

Could become a problem.
