Chapter 115:Founder’s ball IX
Chapter 115: Chapter 115:Founder’s ball IX
The applause lingered only a few moments before the orchestra eased into the next waltz.
Almost immediately, conversation returned to the Grand Assembly Hall.
Only...
It was no longer the same conversation.
Students who, only moments ago, had been discussing professors, summer holidays, and committee work now found themselves speaking of something else entirely.
Or rather...
Someone else.
"Did you see Lord Blackwood?"
"I thought he never danced."
"So did I."
"But apparently..."
"He does."
"...With Lady Beaumont."
The words spread quietly from one cluster of students to another.
Not loudly.
Never loudly.
The Founders’ Ball was, after all, a formal occasion.
But whispers had a remarkable way of traveling farther than raised voices.
"I told you Friday wasn’t nothing."
"The luncheon?"
"And the Literature Society."
"The escort."
"The emerald."
Someone glanced toward the dance floor where Damian and Vivienne had only just separated.
"I suppose we have our answer."
Another nodded slowly.
"I think we do."
Not everyone agreed.
"They’ve known one another since childhood."
"They have."
"Perhaps everyone is still reading too much into it."
The first student hesitated.
Then quietly admitted,
"...Perhaps."
Yet even as the words left his mouth...
He didn’t sound convinced.
Across the ballroom...
Damian released Vivienne’s hand.
Their dance had ended.
The realization he had reached during the waltz remained unchanged.
Until tonight, every decision concerning Vivienne Beaumont had seemed perfectly explainable.
She was his childhood friend.
That alone had always been sufficient.
It no longer was.
That explanation no longer accounted for the man he had become whenever Vivienne Beaumont was involved.
Looking back...
The committee outreach.
The luncheon.
The Literature Society.
The countless occasions on which he had found himself seeking her company without conscious thought.
None of them had seemed remarkable at the time.
They had simply felt... natural.
He had mistaken that familiarity for the lingering affection of childhood.
Yet somewhere between meeting her again at Saint Albion and the present...
That explanation had quietly ceased to be enough.
When had it happened?
He couldn’t say.
There had been no single conversation.
No singular moment.
No grand revelation.
Only countless ordinary encounters that, little by little, had changed the way he looked at her.
Or perhaps...
Changed the way he looked for her.
He simply had not noticed the distinction until there was no longer any honest way to ignore it.
That, more than anything else, explained why the whispers surrounding him no longer felt misplaced.
They had witnessed his actions long before he had understood them himself.
Only now did he recognize that what he had dismissed as the affection of a childhood friend had quietly become something far more difficult to name.
He simply had not realized when.
He inclined his head politely.
"Thank you for the dance."
Vivienne smiled with easy warmth.
"No."
"Thank you."
The smile she gave him was the same one she had worn throughout the waltz.
Open.
Bright.
Entirely genuine.
It lingered for only another heartbeat before Claire appeared seemingly from nowhere.
"Vivienne."
Claire caught her arm with unmistakable excitement.
"We need to talk."
Vivienne blinked.
"...Now?"
"Especially now."
Amelia and Eleanor were already approaching.
Vivienne looked apologetically back toward Damian.
"I suppose I’m being kidnapped."
"The evidence would suggest so."
She laughed.
"I’ll see you later."
He inclined his head once.
"I look forward to it."
Only after she disappeared among her friends did Damian allow himself a slow breath.
The whispers surrounding him had grown noticeably louder.
Not loud enough for words to be distinguished.
Just enough.
Enough to know Julian’s warning had become reality.
He no longer believed they were mistaken.
They had simply witnessed exactly what he himself had only just understood.
He hoped...
Quietly...
That the evening would end there.
Experience suggested otherwise.
A short distance away, Julian watched the scene with folded arms.
Adrian stood beside him, silently observing the ballroom.
Damian joined them.
Julian’s gaze swept briefly across the hall.
"...It’s begun."
Damian followed his line of sight.
Students looked away the instant they realized he had noticed them.
"...Yes."
Julian exhaled quietly.
"I warned you people were watching."
"...You did."
Julian regarded him for a moment.
"You’re taking this rather calmly."
Damian was silent for a heartbeat.
Then he answered quietly.
"...You weren’t wrong."
Julian naturally assumed he meant the rumors.
Damian meant something else entirely.
Adrian offered a small, helpless smile.
"I don’t think you’ll have to wait until tomorrow."
Julian nodded once.
"No."
"I believe tonight will be sufficient."
Nothing more was said.
There was nothing more to say.
The consequences had already begun.
Across the hall, Catherine stood perfectly composed.
Only those who knew her well would have noticed how tightly her fan was clasped in her hands.
One of her companions leaned closer.
"...Lady Lovell?"
Catherine’s eyes never left the far side of the ballroom.
Where Damian had just danced with Lady Beaumont.
"...Yes?"
"...Are you alright?"
She smiled.
The smile was practiced.
Graceful.
Exactly as she had been taught.
"Perfectly."
Her companion hesitated.
"...I thought it rather..."
She searched for an appropriate word.
"...Questionable."
Catherine remained silent.
Another friend spoke more quietly.
"Lady Beaumont is engaged."
"...She is."
"And yet..."
No one finished the sentence.
They didn’t need to.
Catherine replayed the scene in her mind.
Lady Beaumont smiling.
Lady Beaumont extending her hand.
Lady Beaumont asking Damian to dance before the entire university.
It was improper.
Wasn’t it?
Surely...
Lady Beaumont should have known how such a thing would appear.
Somewhere, a quieter voice reminded her that Damian had been the one to cross the ballroom first.
She did not linger on that thought.
Instead, the image that remained was Lady Beaumont smiling beneath the chandeliers as she extended her hand.
She ought to have known better.
The thought settled firmly in Catherine’s heart.
And with it...
Came a bitterness she had never before associated with Vivienne Beaumont.
At the opposite end of the ballroom, Anthony had just concluded another conversation with a member of the Student Council when a pair of senior students approached.
"President Ashford."
Anthony inclined his head.
"Good evening."
One of them smiled.
"It seems Lord Blackwood danced tonight."
Anthony blinked.
"I hadn’t expected that."
"Neither had we."
The student chuckled.
"Lady Beaumont appears to have changed his mind."
Anthony glanced across the ballroom.
Beyond the sea of guests, Vivienne laughed with her friends.
Damian stood quietly beside Julian and Adrian.
"...I see."
Before he could consider the matter further, another member of the committee approached.
"President Ashford, may I have a moment?"
"Of course."
Anthony turned without hesitation.
Whatever curiosity had briefly surfaced was set aside as quickly as it had come.
The orchestra began another piece.
Couples returned to the dance floor.
Crystal chandeliers continued to cast warm light across polished marble.
Laughter drifted through the hall as though nothing had happened.
And yet...
Before the evening was over, every corner of Saint Albion University would be speaking of the same dance.
The music had ended.
Its echoes had only just begun.
