Chapter 72: Chapter 72: from ideas to action II

The room grew still once more.

Mrs. Bennett let her gaze sweep slowly across the classroom. "To make that possible..."

"Each Special Project Team will operate as an independent working group."

James opened the first folder.

Mrs. Bennett continued.

"Each working group will consist of six members."

"The freshman who authored the proposal will serve as the Project Lead."

"They will be joined by two freshman project assistants..."

"...and three upperclassmen."

She paused.

"Among those upperclassmen..."

"...one will serve as the Senior Coordinator."

"The coordinator is not there to lead the project in your place."

"They are there because implementing a Foundation initiative requires experience."

"You’ll be coordinating with partner organizations."

"Local businesses."

"Community leaders."

"Foundation departments."

"Budgets."

"Schedules."

"Permits."

"Volunteers."

"These are responsibilities you’ve never handled before."

"Our senior coordinators have."

"They’ll guide you through the process."

A thoughtful silence followed.

It suddenly felt...

Very real.

Mrs. Bennett smiled.

"Students not assigned directly to a Special Project Team will form this year’s Foundation Operations Group."

"They’ll rotate between our existing programs while providing logistical support wherever needed."

"No project succeeds through six people alone."

"The Foundation succeeds because every department supports every other."

Several students nodded in understanding.

The structure suddenly made perfect sense.

Mrs. Bennett glanced toward Anthony.

"My lord."

Anthony rose.

"As Mrs. Bennett has explained..."

"The Special Project Teams are no longer academic proposals."

"They are now Foundation initiatives."

His calm voice carried effortlessly through the room.

"As representative of House Ashford..."

"...I will continue overseeing the Foundation’s involvement with all four projects."

He paused briefly.

"My responsibility is to ensure that each initiative receives whatever institutional support the Foundation can provide."

He looked around the room.

"Each project addresses a different need."

"Each has the potential to improve the lives of the communities we serve."

"Each therefore deserves our full commitment."

Another brief pause.

"There is..."

"...however..."

"...one project with which I intend to become more directly involved."

The room instinctively quieted.

Anthony’s expression remained unchanged.

Professional.

Composed.

Measured.

"The Community Skills and Empowerment Project proposed by Lady Evelyn Sinclair..."

"...reflects a long-term direction I believe the Ashford Foundation should continue exploring."

"It isn’t simply another outreach activity."

"If developed carefully..."

"...it has the potential to influence how this Foundation serves communities for many years to come."

He inclined his head slightly.

"I therefore intend to work closely with that project throughout its implementation."

Silence followed.

No one seemed surprised.

It was a decision that made perfect sense.

Anthony wasn’t choosing Lady Evelyn.

He was choosing the future he believed the Ashford Foundation could become.

Vivienne lowered her gaze.

...Of course.

She should have expected it.

Even if so many things had already changed...

Anthony was still Anthony.

The future Duke of Ashford.

He would naturally devote himself to an idea capable of shaping the Foundation’s future.

She understood that.

She truly did.

Even so...

A small ache quietly settled somewhere inside her chest.

Mrs. Bennett lowered her gaze to the assignment sheet before her.

"We’ll begin with the four Special Project Teams."

The classroom seemed to straighten almost in unison.

Excitement.

Curiosity.

A touch of nervousness.

Every student waited quietly for the first name.

James stepped beside the lectern, several copies of the assignment lists already prepared in his hands.

Mrs. Bennett smiled.

"The first Special Community Project..."

"...Community Resource Partnership."

Vivienne’s heart skipped.

My proposal...

The thought escaped before she could stop it.

Mrs. Bennett continued.

"This initiative seeks to establish long-term partnerships between the Foundation and local businesses, redirecting usable surplus resources toward the communities we serve."

She looked up.

"Project Lead..."

"Miss Vivienne Beaumont."

Warm applause immediately filled the room.

Claire beamed.

Amelia clapped enthusiastically.

Eleanor smiled with quiet pride.

Vivienne rose from her seat before offering a polite bow.

"...Thank you."

Mrs. Bennett returned the smile.

"The remaining members of the project will receive their individual assignments shortly."

She glanced back at the page.

"The Senior Coordinator assigned to Community Resource Partnership..."

"...Mr. Damian Blackwood."

For the briefest moment...

Vivienne simply stared.

...Damian?

Her eyes instinctively searched for him.

Across the room, Damian looked up.

A few days earlier...

While the Foundation coordinators had been discussing the upperclassmen assignments...

Mrs. Bennett had glanced in his direction.

"Mr. Blackwood."

"You spoke rather passionately in support of Lady Beaumont’s proposal during last week’s discussion."

"I believe you’d be well suited to help bring it to life."

Damian had accepted with little hesitation.

It had simply made sense.

He had defended the proposal because he genuinely believed it deserved to be implemented.

Helping guide its development was the natural next step.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

The memory faded.

Damian inclined his head politely.

"I’ll do my best."

Only then did his gaze drift toward Vivienne.

Their eyes met.

He offered her the same easy smile he always seemed to wear.

One that quietly seemed to say,

We’ll manage.

Without realizing it...

Vivienne found herself smiling back.

Then...

A small realization quietly surfaced.

...This wasn’t how it happened.

In the original novel...

There had only been one implementation project.

Lady Evelyn Sinclair’s.

Damian Blackwood had been assigned as its Senior Coordinator.

Not hers.

Vivienne blinked.

Then, almost unconsciously...

She smiled a little wider.

She blinked.

Then, almost unconsciously...

She smiled a little wider.

...A change.

A small one.

But a welcome one nonetheless.

Mrs. Bennett continued.

"Our second Special Community Project..."

"...Community Skills and Empowerment."

Evelyn quietly folded her hands in her lap.

"This initiative seeks to build long-term community independence by connecting professionals, educators, alumni, and skilled volunteers with underserved communities through sustainable learning programs."

She looked toward Evelyn.

"Project Lead..."

"Lady Evelyn Sinclair."

Another round of applause echoed throughout the room.

Evelyn rose gracefully.

"Thank you."

She bowed before returning to her seat.

Mrs. Bennett continued announcing the members of Evelyn’s implementation team, including the upperclassman assigned as its Senior Coordinator.

Vivienne lowered her gaze.

The project had officially been announced.

There was no changing it now.

Anthony would work alongside Lady Evelyn’s team...

Just as he had in the original story.

Only...

This time...

The road leading there had become very different.

She looked toward Damian almost unconsciously.

In the original novel...

He would have been standing beside Evelyn as well.

Now...

He was her Senior Coordinator.

A tiny smile returned to her lips.

Not everything was the same.

Mrs. Bennett turned another page.

"The third Special Community Project..."

"...Community Charity Fair."

Amelia’s eyes widened.

"Project Lead..."

"Miss Amelia Hartwell."

"...Me?"

The words escaped before Amelia could stop them.

Gentle laughter spread throughout the room.

Mrs. Bennett smiled.

"Yes, Miss Hartwell."

"Congratulations."

Amelia hurriedly stood.

A bright smile lit her entire face as she bowed.

"I’ll do my best."

Claire laughed quietly.

"I never doubted you would."

Mrs. Bennett continued.

"Our final Special Community Project..."

"...Books Beyond the Shelf."

Claire blinked.

Then blinked again.

"Project Lead..."

"Miss Claire Whitmore."

Claire stared at Mrs. Bennett for an entire heartbeat.

"...Wait."

"Mine?"

Another wave of laughter followed.

Even Mrs. Bennett smiled.

"Yes."

"Yours."

Claire stood so quickly she nearly knocked against her chair.

"I..."

She laughed sheepishly.

"...Thank you very much."

By the time she sat down...

Her cheeks had turned completely pink.

Amelia gently nudged her shoulder.

"You’ll be wonderful."

Claire whispered back,

"I hope you’re right."

Mrs. Bennett closed the final folder.

"The detailed assignments for each working group have already been prepared."

"You’ll receive them before leaving today."

"Over the coming weeks..."

"Your responsibilities will gradually increase."

She smiled warmly.

"This is no longer a proposal."

"It is no longer an exercise."

"It is no longer a classroom discussion."

"It is now your responsibility."

A thoughtful silence settled over the room.

Forty students.

Four projects.

One Foundation.

The semester they had imagined only a week ago had quietly transformed into something much greater.

Outside...

The Ashford Foundation continued its work as it always had.

Inside...

Four ideas had just taken their first step toward becoming reality.
