Chapter 73: Chapter 73: her team’s first meeting

The classroom remained quiet for several moments after Mrs. Bennett finished speaking.

Forty students.

Four Special Project Teams.

One Foundation Operations Group.

The realization gradually settled over everyone.

This was no longer an academic exercise.

The semester had truly begun.

Mrs. Bennett closed the final folder before looking around the room.

"Very well."

"The detailed assignment sheets have already been placed inside your folders."

"Please take a few moments to review them."

"Students assigned to the Foundation Operations Group..."

She glanced toward the young man standing near the lectern.

"...please follow Mr. James Oliver."

James stepped forward with his usual composed smile.

"We’ll begin with a brief orientation of the Foundation’s departments before discussing your individual assignments."

"You’ll be working closely with each of them throughout the semester."

"So I’d like everyone to become familiar with how they operate."

Several students immediately stood.

Among them...

Eleanor Hayes.

She gathered her notebook before looking toward Vivienne.

Their eyes met across the classroom.

Eleanor smiled.

"Good luck."

Vivienne returned the smile almost immediately.

"You too."

There was no sadness in the exchange.

Only quiet encouragement.

For the first time since joining the Community Outreach and Development Program...

The four friends would be working separately.

Not because they had drifted apart.

But because each had been entrusted with different responsibilities.

James opened the classroom door.

"This way, everyone."

The sixteen members of the Foundation Operations Group quietly followed him into the corridor.

Within moments...

The room felt noticeably quieter.

Only the twenty-four students assigned to the four Special Project Teams remained.

Mrs. Bennett looked around once more.

"The rest of you may begin meeting with your respective teams."

"I’ll remain here if any questions arise."

With that...

She stepped aside.

The classroom was theirs.

Vivienne lowered her eyes to the folder resting in her hands.

Taking a slow breath...

She opened it.

The first page had already been neatly prepared.

Community Resource Partnership

Project Lead

Vivienne Beaumont

Senior Coordinator

Damian Blackwood

Upperclassman Assistants

Jessica Parker (Third Year)Peter Lawson (Second Year)

Freshman Project Assistants

Oliver Reed (First Year)Sophia Ellis (First Year)

Vivienne quietly read each name.

Six people.

For the next several months...

This small group would become her team.

She carefully closed the folder before making her way toward one of the tables near the classroom windows.

Five others were already gathering there.

Damian Blackwood.

Jessica Parker.

Peter Lawson.

Oliver Reed.

Sophia Ellis.

For a brief moment...

No one spoke.

Almost instinctively...

Everyone’s attention settled upon Damian.

It was hardly surprising.

He was the eldest among them.

A fourth-year student.

The heir to House Blackwood.

One of the Ashford Foundation’s most experienced senior volunteers.

Damian noticed the expectant glances almost immediately.

The corners of his lips lifted into an easy smile.

Then...

Without the slightest hesitation...

He turned toward Vivienne.

"Our Project Lead."

His voice carried the same relaxed confidence as always.

"What shall we do first?"

Vivienne blinked.

For a heartbeat...

She had almost expected him to begin.

Instead...

He was waiting.

For her.

A small smile appeared.

Warm.

Almost grateful.

She looked around the little circle.

Five unfamiliar faces.

Soon...

They would all be working toward the same goal.

"I think..."

She held the folder lightly against her chest.

"...we should begin by introducing ourselves."

"If we’re going to be working together for the rest of the semester..."

"...I’d like us to know one another first."

For just a brief moment...

No one spoke.

Then Damian gave a small nod.

"I think that’s a good place to start."

The others nodded in quiet agreement.

Vivienne smiled.

"Then..."

"I’ll go first."

She straightened almost unconsciously.

"My name is Vivienne Beaumont."

"I’m a first-year student."

"And..."

A faint laugh escaped her.

"I suppose you’ve all already heard..."

"I’ll be serving as Project Lead."

Her smile softened.

"I know I still have much to learn."

"So I’ll be relying on everyone’s experience."

"But..."

"I’ll also do everything I can to make this project worthy of the Foundation’s trust."

"I look forward to working with all of you."

There was nothing rehearsed about her introduction.

Neither overly formal...

Nor overly familiar.

Simply sincere.

Damian quietly found himself smiling.

...A good beginning.

The young woman standing nearest Vivienne spoke next.

Jessica Parker came from a family whose members had served the Kingdom in public administration for generations. Tall and poised, with neatly pinned chestnut hair and calm brown eyes, she carried herself with the quiet confidence of someone accustomed to responsibility. During her three years with the Ashford Foundation, she had earned a reputation for remaining composed even when projects became complicated.

She inclined her head politely.

"I’m Jessica Parker."

"A third-year student."

"This is my third year volunteering with the Foundation."

"I’ll mainly be assisting with community coordination."

She smiled gently.

"It’s a pleasure to meet everyone."

Beside her, the young man adjusted the folder beneath his arm before speaking.

Peter Lawson was the son of the founder of one of the Kingdom’s largest transportation companies. Broad-shouldered, with neatly combed dark hair and thoughtful gray eyes, he possessed the practical air of someone who preferred solving problems over talking about them. Much of the previous year had been spent coordinating logistics for Foundation outreach programs, earning him a quiet reputation for reliability.

"My name is Peter Lawson."

"I’m a second-year student."

"I worked primarily with the Foundation’s logistics and distribution teams last year."

"If our project needs help coordinating transportation or deliveries..."

"I’ll be happy to assist."

Vivienne nodded appreciatively.

"Thank you."

One of the freshmen introduced himself next.

Oliver Reed was the son of one of the Kingdom’s cabinet ministers. Raised in a household where public service, diplomacy, and careful judgment were part of everyday conversation, he had developed the habit of listening far more than he spoke. Slender, with neatly combed dark hair and thoughtful gray eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed glasses, he carried himself with quiet composure. Although quiet, he had graduated near the top of his class before entering St. Albion.

"My name is Oliver Reed."

"I’m a first-year student."

"My proposal wasn’t selected..."

"But I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this project."

"I’ll do my best."

Finally...

The remaining freshman smiled warmly.

Sophia Ellis stood apart from many of her classmates in one respect.

She came from neither nobility nor one of the Kingdom’s great business families.

Instead...

She had earned admission to St. Albion University through one of its most prestigious academic scholarships.

An achievement granted only to the most exceptional students each year.

With shoulder-length black hair and bright, attentive eyes, she carried herself with a quiet confidence that came entirely from her own hard work.

"My name is Sophia Ellis."

"I’m also a first-year student."

"I look forward to working with everyone."

"I hope I’ll be able to contribute in whatever way I can."

At last...

Only one introduction remained.

Every pair of eyes naturally turned toward Damian.

He smiled almost helplessly.

"I suppose it’s my turn."

A few soft chuckles circled the table.

"My name is Damian Blackwood."

"I’m a fourth-year student."

"And I’ll be serving as this project’s Senior Coordinator."

His introduction ended there.

It didn’t need to continue.

Everyone present already knew who Damian Blackwood was.

The introductions concluded.

For a quiet moment...

The six of them simply looked around the small circle.

Only a few minutes earlier...

They had been little more than names printed on an assignment sheet.

Now...

They were a team.

For the next several months...

The success of the Community Resource Partnership would rest in the hands of the six people gathered around that table.

Vivienne looked at each of them once more.

Then smiled.

"...Well."

"I suppose we should begin."
