Chapter 22: Chapter 22: The Nothern Rotation..

Korr took twelve first-band fighters men who had bled with him at the river and in the high pass and climbed the long path that led toward the upper overlooks.

Bor walked at his shoulder, still favoring the leg wounded in the earlier ambush.

The rest moved in disciplined silence, eyes on the rock, the scrub, the places where a body could wait unseen.

Behind them the valley remained under tightened order.

Vara had placed trusted first-band men on every major path that left the caves.

The second band held the eastern and southern watches under clear oversight.

Elka’s circle had not broken the public command, but the quiet around their fire felt deliberate rather than obedient.

The first day on the northern rotation passed without contact.

They walked the high trails, checked the old signs left by the Hollow Kin, and found nothing fresher than the tracks already known.

At night they made a cold camp in a sheltered cleft, fires kept low, watches doubled.

Korr slept in short stretches, the cut on his ribs a steady reminder of the last time these ridges had drawn blood.

On the second day the hills began to speak again.

Near a narrow saddle between two dark outcrops Bor stopped and raised a hand. The others froze.

He crouched, fingers hovering above a partial print in the thin soil.

"Fresh," he murmured. "Since last night. One pair of feet. Moving light. Not ours."

Korr scanned the surrounding rock. "Direction?"

"North and high. Toward the older caves the songs name."

They followed.

The trail was careful almost too careful. Whoever left it knew how to move on stone without leaving clear sign, yet had not bothered to erase everything.

A broken stem. A scuff where a heel had slipped.

A single strand of dark hair caught on a thorn. It felt less like a scout’s path and more like an invitation, or a test.

They found the place near midday: a shallow overhang marked with the same three-and-one symbol that had been on the hide taken from the dead Hollow Kin.

The fire ring was cold, but the ash was not old.

Beside it lay a small bundle wrapped in cured skin dried meat, a twist of bitter root, and a single finger bone, carefully cleaned and drilled for a cord.

Bor’s face hardened.

"They know we walk these trails now.

This is left for us to find."

Korr turned the bone in his fingers.

It was small, older than the ones on the necklace taken from the earlier dead.

A message, or a claim. Either way, the Hollow Kin were no longer only watching from a distance.

He ordered a full sweep of the surrounding ground. No further tracks.

No waiting blades.

Only the quiet of the high ridges and the knowledge that older eyes had been close enough to leave a gift and vanish.

They returned to the overlook post before dusk and sent a runner down to the valley with the bone and the report.

The rest of the rotation continued under tighter caution.

No one slept easily that night.

In the valley the runner’s news spread faster than the formal report.

Vara received it in the deep council chamber with Gron present.

Elka was summoned and came with Sura at her shoulder.

The finger bone lay on the stone table between them like a quiet accusation.

Vara’s voice was level.

"They left this on a trail we now walk every day.

They want us to know they can reach the same ground we claim.

The northern rotation continues.

The watches remain doubled.

And every fighter who leaves the valley does so under clear order and clear count."

Elka studied the bone without touching it.

"A single bone and a cold fire.

The Hollow Kin play the same game the river once did fear first, blood second. Useful for binding the kingdom under one voice. Convenient timing."

Gron’s cracked gaze settled on her. "Convenient or not, the bone is real.

The tracks are real.

The men who died in the high pass were real.

Treat the threat as empty and the next bone may come from a throat we cannot afford to lose."

Elka inclined her head. "I treat every threat as real until it is proven otherwise.

My circle keeps the order.

The eastern and southern paths remain quiet under our feet.

When the northern ridges grow teeth again, you will have every strong arm I can give.

Until then, I will not pretend the internal questions have vanished simply because an older enemy has shown its face."

She left with Sura.

The chamber felt colder after they were gone.

Vara looked at Korr’s empty place at her shoulder he was still on the high rotation and then at Gron. "She keeps the public peace while the fear is fresh.

The moment the Hollow Kin fall quiet, the same knives will come out again.

We use the time.

Keep the second band’s movements visible.

Keep the first band’s loyalty tight.

And when Korr returns from this rotation, I want the claim on him renewed in full view of anyone still measuring the balance."

Gron only nodded.

The old man had said all he needed to say.

Korr’s rotation ended on the fourth day. They came down from the ridges with no further contact, only the lingering sense that the Hollow Kin had measured them and withdrawn to wait.

The valley received them with the same uneasy quiet that had settled since the proof first arrived.

Fighters nodded as Korr passed.

Some with respect.

Some with calculation.

The songs about him had not grown softer; they had only grown more careful.

Vara was waiting in her chamber when he reported. The flap closed behind him.

The fire was already high.

She listened to the full account the fresh tracks, the marked overhang, the finger bone left like a calling card without interruption.

When he finished she stood, crossed to him, and rested both hands on his chest, feeling the steady beat under the scars and the newer cut.

"They are testing the same way Elka tests," she said. "Not with full force.

With presence. With the knowledge that they can reach what we claim."

Her fingers traced the edge of the bandage on his ribs.

"You walked their ground and came back.

That is what the tribe needs to see.

That is what Elka needs to remember."

She pushed him back onto the furs, climbed over him, and freed him from the loincloth with deliberate hands.

She stroked him until he was hard, then sank down onto his cock in one long, claiming motion.

A low sound left her throat as she took him deep.

She began to move, rolling her hips in slow, possessive strokes, hands braced on his shoulders, eyes locked on his.

"Two fronts," she murmured. "The ridges above us. The circle beside us.

Both watching to see which way the balance tips."

She leaned down, breasts brushing his chest, and bit the side of his neck hard enough to mark.

"Stay the edge I need on both. Come back to these furs.

And keep choosing the same side while the kingdom holds its breath."

Korr thrust up to meet her.

The wet sound of their joining filled the chamber. Vara’s rhythm grew deeper, almost fierce.

She came with a sharp, shaking cry, body clamping around him, and the pull of it dragged him over the edge with her.

He held her hips and spilled deep while she kept moving through it, drawing every pulse.

Afterward she stayed seated on him, forehead against his, breathing slowing together.

"The northern rotation continues," she said quietly.

"You will take it again in three days. Between now and then I will keep the valley’s knives sheathed by the weight of the Hollow Kin’s shadow.

Use the time. Rest. And remember that every song still sung about you is both shield and target."
