Chapter 26: Chapter 26: The Internal Cut..(18+)

The mixed watches began the morning after Korr’s return.

First-band leads walked every northern and northeastern rotation with second-band numbers under their count.

The arrangement was public, exact, and deliberate.

Vara made certain the tribe saw the spine of the first band holding the outer paths while Elka’s people filled the ranks.

The message was clear: the Hollow Kin threat bound them under one command, whether every fighter liked the hand that held it or not.

Elka provided the numbers without open protest.

Sura walked one of the eastern mixed rotations with a first-band lead named Torren, a solid spearman who had stood with Korr at the river.

Drak remained closer to the caves, watching the internal paths with the same flat patience he had shown since the first quiet tests.

The public peace held.

The private calculations did not stop.

Korr spent the first day of the new arrangement organizing the northern mixed groups and checking the wounded from the last fight.

The cut on his upper arm had been cleaned and bound again; it pulled when he lifted the axe but did not slow him.

Bor limped less than before and refused any suggestion that he take a lower post.

The older hunter’s eyes stayed on the high ridges even when he stood inside the valley.

On the second night of the mixed watches, the quiet broke from the inside.

A second-band fighter under Elka’s influence Vesh’s former companion, a lean man named Ral was found near the lower water channel with his throat opened by a single clean cut. No struggle marks.

No witnesses.

The body lay in a place where the night watch should have passed twice before the discovery.

The blood was still wet when the alarm rose.

The tribe gathered fast under torchlight. Rumors moved faster than the formal report.

Some said Ral had spoken too freely about the mixed watches being a humiliation.

Others claimed he had been seen near the holding caves where the earlier Hollow Kin-linked prisoners still waited.

A few whispered that the cut was too clean for a panicked fight and too quiet for a Hollow Kin raid this close to the fires.

Vara stood over the body with Gron and Korr at her sides.

Elka arrived with Sura and Drak, face carefully blank under the torchlight.

"No one saw," the nearest watch reported, eyes on the ground.

"The path was walked at the proper times. The body was not there on the earlier pass."

Vara’s voice was cold. "The cut is clean.

The place is inside our doubled watches. This is not a Hollow Kin blade from the high ridges."

Elka’s gaze moved over the body, then to Korr, then back to Vara.

"A man dies in the dark and the first word is that it cannot be the enemy we already know is watching us. Convenient.

The mixed watches put my people under first-band eyes.

Now one of them is dead and the story already points inward."

Gron’s cracked voice cut across the rising murmur. "The Hollow Kin have not yet struck this close to the fires.

The cut is Tribunal-clean.

The place is inside the count.

Both things can be true at once: the ridges remain a threat, and someone inside the caves decided a restless tongue needed silencing.

The questions will be asked under stone. The watches will not thin while we ask them."

Vara ordered the body taken for burning at first light and the holding caves checked again. The earlier prisoners were still accounted for.

No new tracks led out of the valley.

The night watches were increased once more, this time with paired first-band men on every internal path as well as the outer ones.

The tribe returned to uneasy sleep.

The shadow of the Hollow Kin and the shadow of the internal cut now lay over the same ground.

The next morning the council met in the deep chamber.

Only the three of the Tribunal and Korr were present.

The latest finger bones and marked hides still lay on the stone table beside the older ones.

Vara spoke first.

"Ral’s death is a message.

Whether it came from Elka’s circle silencing one of their own who spoke too loud, or from someone else trying to make her circle look guilty, the result is the same.

The tribe now has two fears sharing the same air.

I will not let either of them break the outer watches."

Gron nodded once.

"The Hollow Kin will smell the blood inside the caves the same way they smelled the earlier division.

If they decide the lower ground is soft enough, the next attack will not be a measuring party in a high draw.

It will be something larger and closer."

Vara’s eyes found Korr.

"You will take the primary northern mixed rotation again in two days. Same caution. Same men where possible.

If the Hollow Kin show themselves in force, answer in force and bring the proof back.

While you are on the ridges I will keep the internal paths under first-band eyes and the questions about Ral’s death under stone.

Elka will not be given room to turn one clean cut into a wider break."

Korr inclined his head.

"And if the cut was meant to draw my name into the story?"

"Then the story will remain the one I decide," Vara said. "You walk the ridges.

I hold the caves. That is still the division of labor that keeps the kingdom from opening itself to the high rock."

When Gron left, Vara closed the distance. The lamps threw long shadows across the painted walls.

She touched the edge of the bandage on Korr’s arm, then raised her fingers to her mouth and tasted the faint copper that remained from the earlier cleaning.

"You live," she said. "Ral does not.

The difference needs to stay visible."

She pushed him back against the stone, worked the loincloth free, and stroked him until he was hard.

Then she turned, braced both hands on the wall, and looked back over her shoulder.

"Take what is yours while the tribe still remembers which blood returns from the ridges and which blood pools inside the watches."

Korr stepped in, shoved the leather up, and drove into her in one deep, hard thrust.

She was ready. The sound she made was low and fierce.

He set a steady, punishing rhythm, one hand gripping her hip, the other braced beside hers.

Each stroke drove a sharp breath from her throat.

The bone necklace swung and clicked against the stone.

"Harder," she ordered.

"Make me feel that the northern paths still have a man who comes back under the same claim."

He gave her harder.

The wet slap of skin filled the chamber.

Vara pushed back to meet every thrust, silver-streaked hair falling forward.

When she came it was with a raw, open cry.

The clench of her body pulled Korr over the edge with her.

He buried himself deep and spilled while she shuddered around him.

They stayed locked for long breaths.

Then she straightened, turned, and rested her forehead against his for a single moment.

"Two days," she said quietly.

"The Hollow Kin are still measuring. Someone inside the caves has already decided a tongue needed cutting. Walk the ridges carefully.

I will keep the internal knives from finding more throats while you are gone."
