Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Internal Cut II(18+)

Ral’s body had been burned before dawn with the proper words, but the clean cut across his throat remained the only clear fact.

No struggle marks on his hands or arms.

No scattered stones or broken scrub to show a fight.

No tracks leading out of the valley toward the high ridges.

The night watches had passed the water channel at the counted times and still found him already cooling on the stones when the next pair arrived.

Vara held the questioning in the deep council chamber.

Oil lamps burned low along the painted walls.

Gron sat to her right, cracked face unreadable.

Korr stood at her left shoulder, axe resting against the stone within easy reach.

The cut on his upper arm from the last northern fight pulled when he shifted his weight, but the healing was clean.

Elka was summoned and came with Sura one step behind her.

She entered the chamber like a woman who already knew how every eye would measure her.

Tall nearly matching Korr’s height she carried herself with the controlled power of a fighter who had never needed to pretend softness.

Her long dark hair hung in heavy braids thick with bone beads, teeth, and small white feathers that shifted when she moved.

A fur-trimmed cloak sat open over a bone-and-hide top that left the strong lines of her shoulders and the full, heavy weight of her breasts clear in the lamp light.

Her skirt hung low on wide, powerful hips, ornaments of bone and carved metal clicking softly with each step.

Athletic muscle showed in her arms and the tight plane of her stomach, balanced by the unmistakable curves of a woman who used her body as both weapon and statement.

Her dark eyes moved once over Korr lingering briefly on the fresh bandage and the older scars then settled on Vara without flinching.

"You called," she said.

Her voice was steady, edged with the same sharpness she brought to the training ground.

"I am here."

Vara’s tone stayed level.

"Ral walked under your influence.

He died inside a counted watch with a single clean cut.

No Hollow Kin blade reaches that close to the fires without leaving more sign than we found.

Speak to what you know."

Elka’s mouth curved, thin and sharp.

"I know a man who talked too freely about the mixed watches being a humiliation is now ash.

I know the story already leans toward my circle because it is convenient while the ridges still hold the tribe’s fear.

I know the Hollow Kin are measuring how loudly the lower caves argue while they watch from the high rock.

That is what I know."

Sura stood silent behind her, spear butt resting on the stone, eyes flat and patient as always.

The River woman’s presence at Elka’s shoulder had become its own quiet statement since the sorting of the captives.

Gron’s cracked voice filled the space between the two women.

"Convenience does not open a throat this cleanly. Someone who knew the watch times and the quiet paths did this.

If it was done to silence a restless tongue inside your circle, say so while the fear of the Hollow Kin still binds the tribe to one command.

If it was done to make your circle look guilty, we will find that hand instead.

Silence serves neither the ridges nor the caves."

Elka’s gaze flicked to Korr again, longer this time.

She took in the breadth of his shoulders, the healing cuts, the way he stood at Vara’s side like a claimed blade that had not yet decided how sharp it intended to remain.

"The Matron’s gladiator keeps returning from the north with more bones and more proof.

The tribe sees him.

The songs still rise around his name even while men die inside the watches.

Perhaps the clean cut was meant to remind everyone that not every throat is protected by a Matron’s claim."

Vara’s fingers closed around the finger-bone necklace at her throat until the knuckles showed white.

"You will keep your circle inside the counted watches.

You will provide every name of every man who spoke with Ral in the three days before his death.

And you will remember that the Hollow Kin are not the only ones who can decide a voice has grown too loud."

Elka inclined her head the minimum required.

The bone beads in her braids clicked softly.

"As the Matron commands." She turned and left with Sura.

The fur cloak shifted over the strong lines of her back and the powerful roll of her hips as she walked out of the lamp light.

When the chamber was empty of all but the three, Gron spoke first.

"She did not deny the possibility that the cut came from inside her own people.

That is the closest thing to an admission she will give while the fear of the ridges still holds the public peace.

The longer the Hollow Kin stay quiet after this internal blood, the more room she will have to turn Ral’s death into a story about first-band overreach and the Matron’s tightening grip."

Vara’s eyes stayed on the painted wall for a long moment.

"Then we do not give her the quiet.

Korr takes the next northern mixed rotation tomorrow instead of in two days. Visible. Strong numbers.

If the Hollow Kin are still measuring, I want them to see the spine of the first band still walking the high trails without hesitation.

While he is gone I will pull every name connected to Ral and put the questions under heavier stone.

Elka will not be given room to shape the story while the ridges remain a shared threat."

Korr nodded once.

"And if the cut was meant to draw my name into the internal blood?"

"Then the story will remain the one I decide," Vara said. "You walk the ridges.

I hold the caves.

That division still keeps the kingdom from opening itself to the high rock."

Gron left them with a final warning.

"The Hollow Kin smell division the way wolves smell blood.

One clean cut inside the watches is already more scent than they needed.

Do not let the next one come from the same direction."

When the elder was gone, Vara closed the distance.

The lamps threw long shadows across the stone.

She touched the edge of the bandage on Korr’s arm, then raised her fingers to her mouth and tasted the faint copper that remained from the morning’s cleaning.

"You live," she said. "Ral does not.

The difference needs to stay visible to every eye that is still measuring the balance."

She pushed him back against the painted wall, worked the loincloth free with deliberate hands, and stroked him until he thickened fully under her grip.

Then she turned, braced both hands on the stone, and looked back over her shoulder.

The silver streaks in her hair caught the lamp light.

The bone necklace hung between her breasts.

"Take what is yours while the tribe still remembers which blood returns from the ridges and which blood pools quietly inside the counted watches."

Korr stepped in, shoved the leather skirt up over her hips, and drove into her in one deep, hard thrust.

She was already wet.

The sound she made was low and fierce.

He set a steady, punishing rhythm, one hand gripping her hip hard enough to bruise, the other braced beside hers on the wall.

Each stroke drove a sharp breath from her throat. The bone necklace swung and clicked against the stone.

"Harder," she ordered.

"Make me feel that the northern paths still have a man who comes back under the same claim."

He gave her harder.

The wet slap of skin filled the chamber.

Vara pushed back to meet every thrust, silver-streaked hair falling forward.

When she came it was with a raw, open cry that the outer guards almost certainly heard.

The clench of her body pulled Korr over the edge with her.

He buried himself deep and spilled while she shuddered around him, the two of them locked together in the lamp light.

They stayed joined for several long breaths. Then she straightened, turned, and rested her forehead against his for a single moment.

"Tomorrow," she said quietly.

"Take the northern rotation early.

Make the Hollow Kin see that the lower caves have not opened for them yet.

I will keep Elka’s circle under count and under eyes until the questions about Ral produce a name or a hand."
