Chapter 31: Chapter 31: The Bone That Spoke!

The sixth day of silence from the high ridges broke in a way no one expected.

It did not break with tracks or an ambush.

It broke with a single object left in a place that should have been impossible.

At first light a first-band runner came down from the highest overlook post white-faced and breathing hard.

In his hands he carried a small bundle wrapped in dark, cured hide.

He did not speak until he stood on the arena ledge in front of Vara, Gron, and the growing crowd that had already begun to gather.

He opened the hide.

Inside lay a human finger bone, freshly cleaned, drilled for a cord, and still carrying the faint pink of recent death.

Tied to it with a thin strand of sinew was a second object: a small, carved wooden bead of the exact style worn by second-band fighters under Elka’s influence.

The bead was darkened with old blood and ash.

The murmur that moved through the tribe was different from the ones that had followed the earlier bones.

This was not only fear of the high rock.

This was the sound of two fronts touching.

Vara’s face remained still, but her eyes had gone cold. "Where?"

"On the stone at the very edge of the highest overlook," the runner said.

"Inside the count.

The night watch passed the post at the proper times.

At dawn it was simply there. No tracks leading to the post from the outer ridges.

No sign of how it was placed."

Gron’s cracked voice was low.

"They reached inside the watch line and left a Tribunal bead with one of their bones. That is not measurement.

That is a message."

Elka arrived as the crowd thickened.

She came with Sura and Drak, tall and composed, the bone beads and teeth in her long braids catching the morning light, fur cloak open over the strong curves of her body.

She looked at the finger bone and the second-band bead for a long moment before she spoke.

"A Hollow Kin bone and a bead from my people, left inside a counted post."

Her voice was steady, but the edge in it was sharper than usual.

"Either the high rock has learned to walk through our watches without leaving tracks, or someone inside the caves wants the tribe to believe my circle is already in their hand."

Vara’s gaze locked on hers.

"The bead is from the second band.

The bone is theirs.

Both things are true at once.

The questions under stone will widen.

Kel remains held.

Every man who has worn that style of bead in the last moon will be counted and questioned.

And the northern watches will change again before the sun is high."

She turned to Korr.

"Take twelve first-band and six second-band under your direct command.

Walk every high post and every secondary saddle before full dark.

If they are still on the ground, end them.

If they have already withdrawn, I want every sign they left.

The quiet is over.

We answer today."

The column formed within the hour.

They climbed under a hard, clear sky.

The mood among the men was different from the earlier rotations.

The bone and the bead had changed the air.

First-band fighters moved with the tight readiness of men who expected blood.

The six second-band men under Korr’s count walked carefully, aware that every eye was measuring them against the bead that had been left with the Hollow Kin bone.

Bor walked at Korr’s shoulder, eyes already scanning the higher rock.

"They want us angry and divided," he said quietly. "That is the oldest way to make a lower tribe open its own gates."

Korr checked the edge of his axe.

"Then we do not give them the division.

We give them the answer."

They found the first sign near the high overlook where the bone had been left.

A single set of bare prints on a narrow ledge that no watch should have been able to reach without being seen.

The prints led upward into broken rock and vanished. No further tracks. No waiting blades.

Only the proof that someone had stood inside the count, placed the message, and gone.

Further along the secondary saddle they found more. A small, carefully shielded fire ring, cold but not old.

Three more finger bones arranged in a short line beside it, each drilled, each still carrying the faint color of recent death.

No bead this time.

Only the bones and the clear sense that the Hollow Kin had wanted the first band to find them after the message at the overlook had already done its work.

No ambush came.

The high rock remained empty of living enemies. The message had been left and the messengers had withdrawn.

They returned to the valley after full dark with the three new bones and the report. The tribe gathered under torchlight in greater numbers than after the quieter returns.

The fear was thicker.

So was the suspicion.

Korr climbed the steps and spoke clearly. "They reached inside a counted post and left a Hollow Kin bone tied to a second-band bead.

On the higher trails they left three more bones and a cold fire.

No contact.

No blood spent on either side.

They wanted the message found and the quiet broken on their terms."

Vara’s voice carried across the stone.

"The northern and northeastern watches triple again.

Every high post will be walked in pairs with first-band leads.

The internal paths remain under the same count.

The questions under stone will include every man who has worn that style of bead.

The Hollow Kin have shown they can reach inside our lines.

We will not give them the chance to do it twice."

Her gaze moved to Elka, who stood at the edge of the torchlight with Sura and Drak. "Your circle will provide the numbers for the new counts.

The command remains first-band.

Any further silence or absence will be treated as the same kind of message the high rock left us this morning."

Elka inclined her head.

The bone ornaments at her hips clicked softly. "As the Matron commands."

She turned and walked back toward her fire without another word.

The tribe watched her go with a different kind of attention than before.

Later, in the deep chamber, the new bones and the bead lay on the stone table beside the older ones.

The air felt heavier.

Gron spoke first.

"They did not need to kill anyone this time. They only needed to place one of our own beads with their bone inside a counted post. The message is simple: the lower caves are already open enough for them to walk through.

Whether that is truth or a carefully built lie, half the tribe will begin to believe it by morning."

Vara’s fingers closed around the bone necklace at her throat.

"Then we answer the lie with force and the truth with names. Kel remains under stone. Every man connected to that style of bead will be pulled and questioned before the next sun.

Korr, you will take the primary northern rotation again at first light with stronger numbers.

If they are bold enough to reach inside the watches, they may be bold enough to wait for the answer on the high trails.

I want the first band in front of whatever comes."

Korr nodded once.

"And if the bead was placed by someone inside to make Elka’s circle look already turned?"

"Then the questions will find that hand as well," Vara said.

"The ridges will still see the men I send.

The caves will still answer to the claim that holds them.

The Hollow Kin will not be given the division they are trying to open."
