Tribunal Kingdom In A Stone Age: Blood, Lust, Gladiators and Milfs
Chapter 34: The Widening Count…
Chapter 34: Chapter 34: The Widening Count...
Korr’s column returned just after full dark with nothing more than the confirmation that the high rock remained patient.
One set of bare prints on a narrow ledge.
No new bones. No fire. No contact.
The Hollow Kin had watched the triple counts form, left the lightest possible sign that they were still present, and withdrawn again.
The message of the bead inside the counted post still hung over the valley heavier than any fresh blood.
Vara received the report on the arena ledge under torchlight.
The tribe gathered in smaller numbers than after the bloodier returns, but the tension was thicker for the lack of visible proof.
She listened without interruption, then spoke so every ear could hear.
"The high rock is still measuring.
The counts remain triple.
The northern and northeastern watches stay under first-band command.
No one thins the numbers because the ridges have gone quiet for a handful of days.
The Hollow Kin do not leave even light sign unless they want the answer measured."
Her gaze moved across the gathered faces and settled for a moment on the place where Elka stood with Sura and Drak at the edge of the torchlight.
Elka’s expression gave nothing.
The bone beads in her long braids caught the firelight as she turned and walked back toward her circle without a word.
The real work began at dawn.
Vara widened the questions under stone beyond Kel and the two earlier witnesses. Every second-band fighter who had worn the same style of bead in the last moon was pulled again, this time in smaller groups, and made to stand under the lamps while first-band guards watched the doors and the reactions of the others.

The process was slow, exact, and deliberately public in its effect even if the words themselves stayed inside the chamber.
Most gave the same careful answers they had given before.
A few admitted they had heard Ral complain about the mixed watches and the first-band leads.
One younger fighter, pressed harder than the others, finally said he had seen Kel speaking with two men near the lower water channel the night before Ral died men who had not been part of the counted watch.
He could not name them.
He could only say they had kept their faces turned from the firelight and that Kel had looked angry when they left.
It was still only shadow.
But the shadow now had more shape.
Kel was brought back into the chamber and confronted with the new statement.
For the first time his flat denials showed a crack.
He admitted he had spoken with two men that night.
He denied knowing their names.
He denied that the conversation had anything to do with Ral’s throat.
When pressed on the bead and the high post he gave the same silence as before.
Vara ordered him held under even heavier guard.
The two unnamed men became the next thread to pull.
Gron watched the entire process from his seat and spoke only when the chamber cleared of all but the three of the Tribunal and Korr.

"You are getting closer to a hand," the elder said. "Or you are getting closer to a story someone wants you to believe.
The Hollow Kin left a second-band bead with their bone inside a counted post.
Now a witness places Kel with two unnamed men the night before the clean cut.
Both things can be true.
Both things can also be arranged.
The longer the ridges stay patient while the lower caves cut into themselves, the more the high rock gains without spending another life."
Vara’s fingers rested on the collection of bones and the single bead.
"Then we keep pulling until the hand is shown or the arrangement breaks.
The counts stay exact.
The northern rotation continues.
And every man who has ever stood close to Kel or Ral will be walked past the lamps again before the next moon."
She looked at Korr.
"You take the primary northern rotation again in two days with the strongest numbers we can spare.
If the Hollow Kin are using the widened questions as cover to prepare a larger move, I want the first band in front of it.
While you are gone I will finish the current round of names and decide whether Kel’s silence is still worth more than a public judgment."
Korr inclined his head.
"And if the two unnamed men are already outside the valley?"
"Then the tracks will show it," Vara said. "And the high rock will have to decide whether it wants to keep measuring or finally spend the blood it has been holding back."
The rest of the day passed under the triple count.
No fresh sign reached the lower posts.
The tribe moved through its work with the careful steps of people who no longer trusted either the ridges or the faces around the fires.
Children were kept closer.
Fighters checked their edges more often than the work required.
The second-band men who still drifted toward Elka’s fire did so with greater care than before, aware that every conversation was now being weighed against the bead and the widening list of names.
Elka did not challenge the process in public.
She walked the lower training ground in the afternoon light, tall and unhurried, the bone beads and teeth in her long braids catching the sun, fur cloak open over the strong lines of her shoulders and the full curves of her body.
~~~~
Sura trained at her side.
Drak watched from the edge of the circle and said little.
When a first-band lead passed close enough to overhear, the conversation in her group stayed on spear work and the northern counts.
Nothing more.
At dusk a runner came from the eastern mixed watch with a different kind of report.
Two second-band fighters assigned to a lower eastern post had failed to answer the midpoint count.
Their weapons and water skins were gone. No blood. No signs of a struggle.
The post itself was undisturbed.
They had simply left the count and not returned.
Vara received the report in the deep chamber with Gron and Korr present.
Elka was summoned at once.
She entered with Sura one step behind her, face composed, eyes already calculating the room.
Vara did not waste words.
"Two of your men left a counted eastern post and have not returned.
Their weapons are gone.
No blood was found.
In a time when the high rock has already reached inside a northern post and left one of your beads with their bone, that absence is not a small thing."
Elka’s voice stayed steady.
"Men have left counts before when the pressure under stone grows too heavy.
You are pulling every name connected to a common bead and holding Kel without a clear hand.
Some will decide the risk of staying is higher than the risk of the ridges.
~~~~
That does not make them Hollow Kin.
It makes them afraid of the questions."
"It makes them gone," Vara answered.
"The eastern watches will be walked with tighter first-band leads until both men are found or proven dead.
Your circle will provide the numbers.
The command remains first-band.
Any further absences will be treated as open desertion under the same shadow as the bead."
Elka inclined her head the minimum required. "As the Matron commands."
She left with Sura.
The ornaments at her hips clicked softly with each step.
When the chamber was empty of all but the three, Gron spoke.
"Two more gone. No blood. No tracks yet. Either they ran from the questions, or they were pulled by the same hand that placed the bead, or they are already on a path that leads to the high rock
Any of the three is a problem.
All three at once would be worse."
Vara’s eyes stayed on the painted wall. "Then we find which one is true.
Double the eastern search parties at first light.
~~~~
Keep the northern rotation on schedule.
And keep Kel under stone until the new absences either clear his name or bury it."
She turned to Korr. "Two days.
Strongest numbers.
If the Hollow Kin are waiting for the lower caves to open further while we chase shadows and missing men, I want the first band ready to close the door with blood if that is what it takes."
