Triple X System
Chapter 429: Ocean Ties
The sudden spike in pressure made the water around their ankles boil with tiny, agitated bubbles.
Elara was already on her feet, though her knees wobbled so violently she had to catch herself against the edge of the coral couch. Her face was bleached entirely white, the golden light in her eyes flickering like a candle caught in a draft.
"Three fleets?" Elara whispered, her voice cracking right down the middle. "Three? They... they brought the Inquisitors? But I’m just an arch-mage candidate! Why would they send three entire executioner armadas for one runaway?"
"Because you didn’t just walk away, little light-user," Seraphina said, stepping out of the warm water. The sheer ocean-blue dress on her body shifted, hardening in a fraction of a second into overlapping scales of cobalt and obsidian mail. "You walked away with internal council secrets, and you hid yourself behind a man marked by abyssal mana. To the Grand Archons, you aren’t just a stray pupil anymore. You’re a breach in their wall."
"Wait," Kyle grunted, swinging his legs over the side of his bench.
The moment his boots touched the glass floor, a blinding spike of pain shot straight up his spine, white-hot and agonizing. His vision flared crimson, and his lungs seized as if someone had filled them with wet sand. He doubled over, clutching his ribs, gasping for air that wouldn’t come.
"Kyle!" Yua scrambled off her cushions, ignoring her own bruised ribs as she threw her arms around his shoulders to keep him from face-planting onto the hard coral. Her pale face was inches from his, her crimson eyes wide with sudden panic. "Don’t move! You idiot, stay down!"
"I’m... I’m fine," Kyle wheezed, his knuckles turning white as he gripped Yua’s forearms. His teeth were slick with blood. "Just... a bad stitch."
"A bad stitch?" Yua snapped, her voice rising into an angry, frightened screech. "You used the Rootcrystal Deer’s core against Seraphina! You forced divine planetary mana through human veins that weren’t ready for it! Your spirit tracks are completely torn to shreds, Kyle!"
"She’s right, my king," Seraphina said, walking toward them with heavy, echoing steps. Her playful, sultry posture was completely gone. In its place stood the cold, towering presence of a war sovereign. "The Rootcrystal’s authority was never meant to be funneled through an unawakened mortal frame. You forced a miracle into a fragile shell. If you channel even a spark of your shadow-gaze right now, your heart will explode before you even cross the threshold of this hall."
"I can fight," Kyle growled, pushing Yua back gently, though his arms were shaking so badly he could barely keep his balance. He glared up at Seraphina, his dark eyes burning through the haze of agony. "I’m not sitting in a dark corner while three fleets tear this spring apart! I’ve lost enough people, Seraphina. I’m not doing it again!"
"You don’t have a choice," Seraphina said softly.
Before Kyle could react, Seraphina raised her hand. A thick, heavy ring of dense, pressurized water erupted from the floor, wrapping around Kyle’s torso and arms like a living vice.
"Hey! Let me go!" Kyle roared, thrashing against the fluid binding. But the moment he tried to flex his core to summon his shadow blades, a sickening crack echoed from inside his chest, and he vomited a mouthful of dark blood directly into the clear water.
"See?" Yua yelled, tears of absolute frustration welling up in the corners of her eyes as she wiped his mouth with her sleeve. "You can’t even stand without your organs rupturing! Shut up and listen for once in your stupid life!"
"Seraphina, don’t do this!" Kyle barked, his voice raw as the pressurized water lifted him off his feet, suspending him in mid-air. "Release me!"
"I am securing my king," Seraphina replied calmly. She flicked her wrist, and the water carried Kyle backward, dragging him toward the heavy, crystal-reinforced security doors at the far end of the Azure Haven—a deep subterranean safe room built into the bedrock of the ocean floor, designed to withstand the collapse of the entire spring.
"Yua, stop her!" Kyle shouted, struggling wildly, but Yua just stood there, her fists clenched so tightly her fingernails bit into her bloodied palms.
"No," Yua choked out, staring at the floor. "She’s right. If you go out there like this, you die. I’d rather lock you up myself than watch you turn to ash."
"Elara!" Kyle tried again, glaring at the young mage. "Elara, talk to them!"
Elara didn’t look him in the eye. She was staring at her hands, which were trembling so hard her wand kept clinking against her ring. "I’m sorry, Conner... but if my mother is up there... you can’t be out there. You don’t know what she does to people marked by the abyss. She’ll break you just to study the pieces."
"Elara’s mother?" Kyle froze, his dark eyes widening as he remembered the stories Elara had let slip during their quiet nights on the road. "High Inquisitor Vespera? The Head of the Fifth Seat?!"
"The very same," Seraphina said grimly. She pushed open the heavy crystal slab of the confinement vault with a flick of her hand. The cold, thick barrier slid back, revealing a small, reinforced room lined with nullifying rune-stones designed to suppress mana and prevent spatial escapes. "Thirteen archons sit on the Clover Council, Kyle. Thirteen absolute monsters who rule the upper sky. And Vespera is among the top five. Her light does not warm; it incinerates."
Seraphina moved her arm, and the water dumped Kyle heavily onto the padded floor of the vault.
"Seraphina! Open this damn door!" Kyle scrambled toward the opening, but the heavy crystal slab slammed shut before he could reach it.
*THUMP!*
Kyle slammed his palms against the thick glass barrier, his breath fogging the clear surface. Inside the vault, the nullifying runes lit up instantly, draining the tiny scraps of shadow mana he tried to gather. The sheer weight of the suppression made his head spin, forcing him down to his knees.
Through the translucent glass, he could see the three women standing outside in the glowing chamber.
Seraphina turned to face Yua and Elara. Her blue-and-black scale armor shimmered under the fading lights of the hall, and in her right hand, her massive, triple-barbed trident materialized in a splash of condensed oceanic mana.
"We have roughly three hours before their forward vanguard breaches the outer reef barriers," Seraphina said, her voice easily cutting through the crystal door via the hall’s acoustics. "The twelve hours I predicted were based on a standard fleet march. Vespera is using warp-sails. She is rushing."
Elara let out a shaky breath, finally pulling her cyan robe tight around herself and securing it with a leather spell-belt. She reached into her pouch, pulling out three small, glowing crystal vials filled with concentrated silver fluid—high-tier mana restoratives she had been hoarding since leaving the academy.
"How many are we talking about?" Elara asked, her tone surprisingly flat now that the initial shock had worn off. She popped the top off one vial and downed it in a single gulp, her pale cheeks flushing as raw light mana flooded back into her exhausted system.
"The Fifth Fleet carries four thousand vanguard knights, two hundred battle-mages, and the Grand Inquisitor herself," Seraphina answered smoothly, checking the balance of her trident. "Along with her two primary lieutenants—the twin mages of the Seventh Seat."
"So three council-level fighters, plus an entire army," Yua muttered, wiping her bloody chin with the back of her hand. She closed her eyes, drawing a deep, ragged breath as her blood core pulsed weakly. "And we have a half-dead pureblood, a runaway scholar, and a fish queen whose domain is about to be turned into a boiling pot."
"I prefer the term *Sovereign of the Deep*," Seraphina corrected dryly, though her violet eyes were dead serious. "And you underestimate my home, little leech. The Wandering Spring is not just water and coral. It is a living organ of Kraken. When the outer reef collapses, the pressure alone will crush half their fleet before they even touch the floor."
"And the ones who survive the pressure?" Yua asked, her crimson eyes snapping open. A thin, sharp blade formed entirely of dark, condensed blood materialized in her right hand, humming with a wicked, metallic edge.
"The ones who survive get drowned by us," Seraphina said cold-bloodedly.
Inside the confinement cell, Kyle pounded his fist against the crystal wall again. "Yua! Elara! Listen to me! You can’t take Vespera head-on! If she’s using warp-sails, her vanguard is isolated from her heavy artillery! You have to bottleneck them at the trench entrance! Don’t let them drop anchor in the open basin!"
Elara turned slightly, looking at Kyle through the foggy glass. A faint, sad smile touched her lips.
"He’s right about the bottleneck," Elara said to Seraphina, ignoring Kyle’s desperate glare. "My mother uses wide-area illumination spells. If she gets room to deploy her grand circles in the open basin, she’ll turn this entire cavern into a blinding furnace. We have to force them into the narrow choke of the Serpent’s Maw."
"The Serpent’s Maw is laced with abyssal currents," Seraphina nodded approvingly. "Good. The pressure there is ten times higher, and light magic suffers a heavy attenuation penalty in the deep mud."
"Hey! Stop ignoring me!" Kyle yelled, his voice muffled by the thick barrier. "If you choke them at the Maw, Vespera will just use her twin lieutenants to collapse the upper ceiling! She did it at the Siege of Oakhaven six years ago! Read her battle records!"
Elara paused, her golden eyes widening slightly. "She did do that... I read those archives in the grand library. She doesn’t care about collateral damage."
"Then we set a lure," Yua said coldly, stepping forward beside Seraphina. Her pale skin was still unnaturally white, but her posture had hardened into that of a royal pureblood ready to kill. "We let their vanguard push past the Maw, make them think we’re retreating into the inner sanctuary, and then I’ll blow the blood-mines we set along the eastern wall. The falling bedrock will crush their rear lines and separate Vespera from her main army."
Seraphina looked at Yua, a faint glint of genuine respect flashing in her violet eyes. "Vicious. Impractical for a land-dweller, but entirely viable in these trench walls. I like it."
"I am NOT letting you three go out there without me!" Kyle roared, gathering every drop of stamina left in his broken body. He slammed his shoulder against the glass door, but the nullification runes flashed brightly, absorbing the kinetic force and throwing him backward onto the floor. He gasped, spitting out another splatter of blood as his chest felt like it was tearing apart from the inside.
Yua walked over to the glass wall, looking down at him through the clear barrier. Her red eyes were soft, filled with a mixture of deep affection and stubborn resolve.
"Stay put, Kyle," Yua said quietly, her voice coming through the small acoustic vents near the top of the door. "You’ve saved my life four times since we met. You fought a god-deer, you fought an ocean queen, and you tore your own body to pieces just to keep us moving. For once... let us do the fighting."
"Yua, don’t—"
"If I die out there," Yua interrupted him, her lips curving into a tiny, bittersweet smile, "you can drag my soul back from the abyss later and yell at me all you want. But right now? You’re sitting this one out."
She turned her back on him, her long black hair swaying as she walked toward the exit of the Azure Haven.
Elara took a deep breath, clutching her wand tightly in both hands. She turned to Kyle, giving him a brief, firm nod. "Keep breathing, Conner. I’ll make sure my mother doesn’t turn your fish-wife into sushi."
"She is NOT my—" Kyle started, but Elara was already walking away.
Seraphina was the last to leave. She stood near the archway, her long, blue-scaled tail sweeping smoothly behind her. She looked back at Kyle over her bare shoulder, her violet eyes glowing with an eerie, ancient light.
"Rest well, my king," Seraphina murmured softly. "When the water turns red and the sky breaks, I shall bring you the head of the Fifth Seat as a footstool for your throne."
"Seraphina! Don’t you dare—"
*CLANG!*
The outer heavy doors of the Azure Haven slammed shut, locking the inner sanctuary into absolute, suffocating silence.
The glowing blue kelp along the ceiling dimmed to a low, barely visible pulse. The soft hum of the turquoise pool settled into a quiet, rhythmic lap, leaving Kyle completely alone in the dark, reinforced vault.
"Damn it!" Kyle cursed violently, slamming his fist against the padded floor. Pain shot up his arm, but he barely felt it through the blinding rage and helplessness suffocating his chest.
He lay there on the cold floor, his chest heaving, listening to the silence.
Far above him, beyond the miles of solid rock and deep ocean pressure, he could faintly feel it—a low, rhythmic vibration echoing through the bedrock. The sky above the Wandering Spring was beginning to shatter, as the heavy, light-imbued war-galleons of the Clover Council descended into the deep waters like falling stars.
Kyle closed his eyes, his dark hair falling over his face as he forced his ragged lungs to take slow, steady breaths.
*Snow,* he called out mentally, his voice burning with cold, desperate intent. *Give me the exact structural status of my spirit tracks.*
[Warning,] Snow’s voice chimed inside his mind, clear, clinical, and unbothered by his emotional state. [Severe internal damage detected. Spirit tracks are seventy-eight percent fractured due to divine mana overload from the Rootcrystal Deer. Current recovery rate is zero point two percent per hour under standard conditions.]
"I don’t care about standard conditions," Kyle growled inwardly, forcing himself to sit up against the wall of the vault, ignoring the intense agony radiating from his core. "Find me a bypass. Route the mana through my shadow channels instead of my main pathways."
[Routing mana through unhealed shadow channels carries a ninety-two percent probability of permanent soul degradation,] Snow replied instantly.
"I didn’t ask for a probability report, Snow," Kyle said, his dark eyes snapping open in the dim light of the vault, burning with an unholy, pitch-black fire. "I asked for a bypass. Do it now."
A long pause filled his mind before Snow’s voice resonated once more.
[Understood. Commencing forced shadow-channel re-alignment. Warning: Pain levels will exceed normal safety thresholds.]
"Good," Kyle whispered, gripping his knees as black, wispy tendrils of shadow mana slowly began to bleed out from beneath his skin, fighting against the nullifying runes of the vault. "Let’s get to work."
