Triple X System
Chapter 444: Blood And Lightning (2)
The forty-two Spire mages stationed along the outer barrier moved with the practiced precision of machine parts. Their long, silver-and-gold robes floated in the water, secured at their waists by heavy bronze utility belts packed with mana-restoration vials and reserve spell-scrolls.
In the center of their triangular formation, Warden Dax held a six-foot bronze staff tipped with a pulsing, pale-blue lightning orb. He was forty years old, a veteran of three surface suppressions, and his face was scarred from old mana-burns.
"Quadrant two report," Dax said into his comms-amulet, his voice transmitted via localized mana-vibrations. "Target status in the lower trench."
"The aquatic humanoids are incapacitated, Warden," a younger mage replied from the perimeter. "Eight confirmed paralyzed. The remaining four are retreating toward the lower rocks. Electrical density across the seabed is holding at seventy percent."
"Keep the current steady," Dax instructed coldly. "Do not let them gather momentum. Aquatic mages rely on fluid movement to build spell-lines. Strip their muscles of control, and they are nothing more than heavy target practice."
"Warden!" a shout rang through the comms. "Movement on the upper basalt ridge!"
Dax shifted his gaze instantly. He didn’t turn his head wildly like an untrained recruit; he simply adjusted his optical focus, activating the internal scrying lens embedded in his left iris.
Fifty yards away, the dark ocean water seemed to twist.
It wasn’t a water current. It was a solid, physical mass of pitch-black shadow, tearing across the seabed at a speed that defied the heavy water pressure.
"Intruder detected," Dax barked, his voice dropping into the rapid, rhythmic cadence of high-tier casting. "Target is an irregular shadow-caster. Class-three kinetic threat. Squad A, drop the solar shield down to thirty degrees! Squad B, focus lightning-line alpha on the incoming trajectory!"
Six mages on the left flank reacted immediately. They didn’t panic. They raised their left arms in unison, their heavy bronze gauntlets glowing with brilliant, gold-and-blue light.
*"By the order of the Spire,"* they chanted together, their voices overlapping in a harmonious spell-loop. *"Bind the sky, electrify the tide!"*
Six thick, jagged beams of bright blue lightning erupted from their gauntlets, converging into a singular, blinding lance of electrical energy that shot straight toward the approaching shadow.
The blue lance ripped through the sea water, boiling the ocean in its path and turning the dark water into a blinding tunnel of light.
Inside the leading shadow mass, Kyle saw the white-hot flash coming.
*Snow,* Kyle commanded in his mind, his eyes narrowed as the heat from the lightning array washed over his skin. *Calculate entry angle.*
[Lightning arc trajectory mapped,] Snow’s quiet voice sounded instantly. [Current density: Forty-five thousand volts. Environmental conductivity: High. Direct contact will disrupt shadow channels for four seconds. Recommendation: Deflect using structural hard-points.]
"I don’t need to deflect it," Kyle muttered under his breath. "I just need to give them a target that isn’t me."
Kyle slammed his right boot onto a jutting basalt pillar. Instead of trying to dodge the lightning lance laterally through the water, he shoved his right hand forward into the seabed.
*"Shadow Well,"* Kyle whispered.
A dense, circular puddle of pure, non-reflective darkness expanded across the stone floor beneath him. The incoming lance of lightning hit the outer ring of the Shadow Well.
Instead of exploding or conducting through the salt water, the electrical energy was sucked directly into the dark void! The Shadow Well acted as a lightning rod, absorbing forty thousand volts of raw electricity and channeling it harmlessly down into the deep rock layers of the seabed.
The water around Kyle hissed, thick steam rising to the surface, but his body remained completely unharmed.
"The shadow... it absorbed the charge?!" the leading mage gasped, his eyes widening behind his silver visor. "That’s impossible! Salt water should have transferred the heat across his whole frame!"
"He’s not using standard darkness magic!" Dax warned over the comms, his voice sharp with anger. "He’s grounding the circuit into the rock! Squad A, drop the physical barriers NOW!"
The mages tried to react. They began to pull their arms back, dropping their gauntlets to trigger their heavy, dome-shaped solar shields.
They were too slow.
Mages were built for long-range destruction and massive spell-loops, but their physical reaction times were bound to the speed of human muscle and bone. Once their casting rhythm was interrupted, the two-second gap between completing a spell and casting a new one was a lifetime to a trained physical combatant.
A streak of crimson light exploded out from the shadow behind Kyle.
Yua didn’t use magic. She didn’t use spell-incantations or high-density mana channels. She used the raw, horrifying physical speed of a Pureblood vampire.
*BOOM!*
The water behind her shattered into a massive shockwave as she kicked off the rock, breaking the sound barrier underwater. Before the leading mage could even raise his hands to start a new spell-verse, Yua was already standing directly in front of him, her pale face inches from his silver visor.
"Your barriers are very pretty," Yua purred smoothly, her voice carrying a cold, terrifying sweetness. "But your necks are so very soft."
The mage’s eyes dilated in sheer terror. He tried to open his mouth to scream, but Yua’s right hand shot forward like a steel piston.
Her slender, clawed fingers slammed straight into the bronze collar of his robes. The high-grade enchanted silk, designed to withstand thousand-degree fireballs, buckled instantly under the raw, kinetic force of her grip. With a sickening *CRACK*, she crushed the mage’s chest-plate, collapsing his breastbone and throwing him backward thirty feet through the water like a ragdoll.
"Target down on the left!" another mage screamed, panicking as he tried to turn his staff toward Yua. "She’s inside the perimeter! Physical combatant! Close-quarters—!"
Yua didn’t let him finish. She spun on her heel, her long legs sweeping through the water, and slammed her heel straight into the second mage’s jaw. The impact shattered his helmet, knocking him unconscious before he even realized his barrier had failed.
"Hold your ground!" Warden Dax roared from the center, his bronze staff glowing with dangerous, unstable light. "Do not let them disrupt the primary circle! Target the girl!"
Three mages behind Dax raised their staffs, preparing to unleash a close-range electrical nova to clear the space around Yua.
"Your spell-lines are open," a calm, cold voice echoed from the dark water above them.
Elara dropped down from the high basalt ledge.
She didn’t carry heavy armor, nor did she use brute force. She held her twin water-daggers loosely in her hands. As she fell through the water, the thin indigo ring in her eyes flared with a brilliant, luminous light—the mark of her newly integrated abyssal core.
She raised her left dagger, pointing it directly at the floating power lines connecting the mages’ staff cores.
*"Flow Reversal,"* Elara commanded softly.
Instead of creating new water from her own mana, Elara tapped directly into the heat channels the mages were using to power their staffs. The warm, steam-filled water generated by the lightning spells suddenly froze mid-air.
A thick, jagged wall of black ice formed instantly around the three mages’ bronze staffs, encasing their weapons and freezing their fingers directly to the metallic handles!
"What?!" one of the mages yelled, trying frantically to pull his hands free. "My staff... the mana circuit is jammed! The water heat was reversed!"
"She knows our casting formulas!" another mage realized, horror dawning on his face as he recognized Elara’s face through the clear water. "It’s... it’s the disgraced daughter of House Selena! She’s countering our heat equations!"
"I am not House Selena," Elara said coldly, landing softly on her feet between the two frozen mages.
She swung her daggers in a swift, elegant figure-eight motion. The flat edges of her blades slammed hard against the sides of their heads, cracking their helmets and dropping both mages to the stone floor, rendered completely unconscious.
Within less than sixty seconds, the left flank of the Clover Spire’s invincible mage formation was in complete, utter ruin.
Six mages were down, three staffs were frozen solid, and the continuous defensive circuit that protected the primary Solar Anchor had been completely fractured.
Warden Dax stood in the middle of the clearing, his staff trembling slightly as he looked at the three figures surrounding him.
To his right stood Yua, her claws dripping with dark sea water, her crimson eyes gleaming with cold amusement. To his left stood Elara, her twin daggers held in a lethal, low guard, her gaze steady and unyielding. And directly in front of him, walking slowly through the steam and floating debris of the broken barriers, was Kyle.
Kyle’s shadow blade was drawn, the dark edge trailing along the basalt floor, leaving a thin, smoking groove in the rock. His coat was scorched, his face was smeared with dark soot, but his eyes were completely calm—the eyes of a predator who had calculated every single variable before taking his first step.
Dax backed up half a step, his heels hitting the metallic base of the primary Solar Anchor. He raised his staff, the blue lightning orb at the tip crackling erratically as his own heart rate spiked.
"You think this changes anything?" Dax rasped, his voice transmitted through his comms-amulet, though it trembled slightly. "You are three irregulars fighting against the entire Spire network! Even if you break this anchor, Grand Archmage Vane has fifty more waiting on the upper shelf!"
Kyle stopped ten feet away from Dax. He didn’t raise his blade to attack. He simply looked up at the massive, glowing bronze pillar towering over them.
"Vane can bring a hundred anchors," Kyle said, his voice low, raspy, and completely devoid of fear. "It won’t matter."
"And why is that, shadow-boy?" Dax spat, trying to gather the remaining electrical mana inside his staff for one final, desperate burst.
Kyle looked Dax straight in the eyes.
"Because you mages always make the same mistake," Kyle said quietly. "You spend all your time building brilliant, complicated traps for your enemies... and you forget that your traps are powered by machines that can be broken by a simple piece of metal."
Before Dax could process the words, Kyle didn’t attack Dax. He plunged his shadow blade straight down into the metallic power junction at the base of the Solar Anchor.
*CRACK-THOOM!*
The dark shadow blade, dense with non-conductive, void-grade mana, cut through the anchor’s primary copper transformer like butter.
The unstable electrical energy trapped inside the anchor had nowhere to go. With its circuit broken and its cooling vents frozen by Elara’s ice, the massive golden pillar began to groan, turning from a bright, golden yellow to a deep, angry crimson.
Dax’s eyes went wide. "No... NO! stop the feed—!"
"Retreat!" Kyle ordered sharply, grabbing Elara by the waist while Yua leapt backward into the shadows.
A second later, the primary Solar Anchor exploded outward in a blinding, silent flash of blue-and-black light, destroying the central power grid of the Iron Shallows and plunging the surrounding sea into complete, absolute darkness.
