### Chapter: The Price of Transmogrified Shadows

The dust and high-pressure steam hung thick in the crater left behind by the Grand Archmage’s divine strike. Searing white-hot currents churned violently through the dark ocean, cooking the sea kelp into black slime and turning the surrounding basalt floor into smooth, glassy slag.

Vane coughed violently, his hand pressing hard against his scorched breastplate. The black-purple residual embers of Kyle’s **Dark Flames** were still clinging to his silver robes, greedily devouring the residual light-mana stored within his divine ward circuits.

"You... insolent demon," Vane spat, his teeth stained with blood as he forced his body up against a fallen basalt block. He looked up at Kyle, his scrying iris working overtime to process the black-and-purple energy coiling around the youth’s right arm. "That flame... it doesn’t just burn. It’s an elemental parasite!"

Ten feet away, Kyle landed lightly on the seabed, his right boot leaving a deep footprint in the wet sand. His posture was deceptively relaxed, but every muscle in his back was coiled tight.

*Hah... hah...*

Kyle’s chest rose and fell in heavy, deliberate breaths. The spectral, translucent sheen of his emergency transmigration was completely gone, leaving his physical form vulnerable once more. His skin felt hot to the touch, the internal recoil of forcibly dragging his soul across phase lines leaving a dull, grinding ache in his core.

[System Warning,] Snow’s voice chimed within his consciousness, tinged with a sharp mechanical ping. [Demon Energy reserve at 1,750/2,500. Shadow Energy at 600/1,000. Physical stamina taking heavy recoil from high-speed phase shifting. Recommend tactical wrap-up before additional Spire reinforcement units arrive.]

*I know,* Kyle thought back, his dark eyes locking onto Vane’s trembling form. *He’s a Grand Archmage, but his personal mana core is fractured. He relied too much on those solar anchors to do the heavy lifting.*

"Kyle," Yua’s voice called out softly from his flank.

She glided over the shattered stone, her red eyes narrow and vigilant. Her clothes were shredded at the shoulders from the shockwave, exposing her pale skin, but her claws were fully extended, dripping with the blood of the perimeter mages she had dismantled earlier. She moved with the predatory grace of an ancient vampire, her feet making no sound as she positioned herself to cut off Vane’s line of sight to the sea floor’s eastern escape trench.

Beside her, Elara stepped forward, holding her twin daggers at a low guard. The ring of deep indigo in her pupils flared bright against the darkness of the trench, a stark contrast to the pale water around her. "The outer light grid is completely dark. Vane’s secondary squad is attempting to fall back to the upper marine transport."

"They aren’t going anywhere," Kyle said, his raspy voice cutting through the heavy rush of the undercurrents.

He didn’t waste time making speech-making promises. His internal clock was ticking. He raised his right leg, resting his heel against the stone floor.

Underneath his skin, the dark essence of his **Abyssal Talon Manifest** hummed to life. The black shadow energy bound to his right limb surged, giving his muscle fibers a dark, terrifying density. With the baseline fifteen percent movement speed boost combined with his naturally high agility, Kyle didn’t just walk—he closed the distance in a blur, kickstarting a cloud of crushed basalt in his wake.

"Protect the Archmage!" two surviving field wardens roared, throwing themselves in front of Vane. They raised their bronze staffs, casting a dual-layered lightning barrier to wall off the path. The blue electrical arcs hummed loudly, turning the water around their hands into a boiling froth.

"Out of my way," Kyle growled. ℯℯ𝑙.

He didn’t use a shadow spell. He pivoted on his left foot and whipped his right leg forward in a devastating arc kick.

*BOOM!*

The kick, empowered by the passive traits of his Abyssal Talon, ignored twenty-five percent of their physical defense straight off the bat. The sheer kinetic impact shattered the bronze barrier like brittle glass, sending shards of concentrated light scattering through the ocean floor. The heel of his boot slammed directly into the first warden’s ribs, applying a dark, visible mark of [Soul Rend] onto the man’s chest.

The warden let out a choked gasp as his soul core vibrated violently from the impact, sending him flying thirty feet back into the rising steam, his staff slipping from his paralyzed fingers.

The second warden, panic flooding his face, tried to thrust a lightning dagger at Kyle’s exposed hip while Kyle was mid-pivot.

*Passive Proc: [Abyssal Reflex]*

The moment the warden’s blade grazed the dark aura surrounding Kyle’s right leg, an automated, pitch-black shadow claw erupted directly from Kyle’s shadow, striking the warden across the face with a brutal, counter-slashing arc!

*SLASH!*

The claw dealt over a hundred percent dark damage on impact, leaving three deep, bleeding gashes across the warden’s throat that instantly began to trigger [Hemorrhage]. The warden dropped his dagger, clutching his neck as he fell back into the dark water, his blood clouding the sea in dark crimson ribbons.

"Vane," Kyle said, stepping through the falling bodies without throwing a glance behind him.

Vane’s eyes widened as he saw the young man approach. The Grand Archmage raised his divine spear with trembling hands, trying to form a simple light-spire incantation, but his will score was already faltering under the pressure of Kyle’s cold killing intent. The air around them felt thick, weighed down by the twenty-five points of raw killing intent suffocating the local mana flow.

Kyle raised his left hand, pointing his open palm directly at Vane’s face.

***"Death’s Call."***

[Consuming 250 Demon Energy.]

Two dense, golf-ball-sized spheres of concentrated pitch-black energy manifested directly in front of Kyle’s knuckles. They didn’t burn with heat like the Dark Flames; they radiated an eerie, suffocating aura of pure decay. The sea water around the black spheres turned black, freezing instantly into tiny flakes of dead ice.

With a soft *swish*, the two black orbs shot forward, slamming straight into Vane’s shoulders before the Archmage could finish his spell-loop.

"AAGHH!" Vane screamed as the black energy sank into his flesh.

It didn’t blow off his arms. Instead, the dark spheres acted like localized mana drains, instantly leeching a massive portion of Vane’s remaining life force and converting it into dark mist that drifted back into Kyle’s body. Vane’s face visibly aged in seconds—wrinkles deepening around his eyes, his silver hair turning brittle and white as his vitality was forcibly dragged out of him. The divine authority he had carried for decades melted into frail, trembling mortality.

Vane collapsed onto his knees, his divine spear clattering uselessly against the stone. "You... you monster... the Spire will... will never let you..."

"The Spire should have stayed on the surface," Kyle said coldly.

He didn’t bother using a high-cost skill to finish it. He raised his right hand, summoning a low-tier blade forged via **Shadow Craft**. The dark, solid sword solidified in his grip within a fraction of a second, perfectly balanced and cold to the touch. With a swift, clean strike, Kyle swung the shadow blade horizontally across the water.

Vane’s words were cut short as his white head detached from his shoulders, drifting slowly into the cold abyssal currents before dissolving into harmless golden particles. The divine artifact spear at his side shattered into dull grey dust, its mana core permanently unspooled.

Silence returned to the Iron Shallows, heavy and profound.

The remaining battle-mages, seeing their Grand Archmage executed so cleanly, completely lost their morale. They cast down their bronze staffs, fleeing upward toward the safety of the surface clouds in absolute, panicked chaos, their light-shields flickering out one by one as they broke formation.

Yua walked over, her bare feet stepping over the shattered remnants of the solar anchors. She looked down at Vane’s fading remains, then turned her gaze to Kyle.

"Clean," Yua noted, a faint smile touching her lips. She reached out, her cool fingers lightly wiping a stray drop of dark blood from Kyle’s cheek. "You used his own speed against him."

"He was slow," Kyle muttered, letting his shadow blade dissolve back into wisps of dark energy. "Surface mages rely too much on their tools. Strip away their arrays, and they don’t know how to take a hit."

Elara approached from the opposite side, her twin daggers fading back into her aquatic storage ring. She looked out over the ridge, down into the trench where Commander Vaelen and the surviving mer-warriors were slowly pushing themselves up from the seabed now that the electrical current had died out.

"The lightning grid is gone," Elara said, her tone filled with quiet relief. "Without Vane and the Solar Anchors, the Clover Council’s forward line in this sector has completely collapsed. They won’t be able to establish another anchor line for weeks."

Kyle rolled his shoulders, feeling the dull ache in his mana channels as the adrenaline began to fade. The internal pressure on his core was easing, though his demon energy reserves were sitting lower than he liked.

[Battle Concluded,] Snow reported inside his mind. [Experience points logged. Demon Energy currently at 1,500/2,500. Shadow Energy at 500/1,000. All primary host functions stable.]

Kyle turned to look at Elara and Yua. The underwater thermal currents were returning to their natural, warm rhythm, washing away the bitter taste of ozone and light-mana from the sea.

"Let’s get back to the sanctuary," Kyle said, slinging his torn coat over his shoulder. "Sovereign Seraphina is going to want a full report on how her trench looks when the sun isn’t shining on it anymore."

Elara smiled softly, reaching down to slide her hand into his. "Lead the way, Kyle."

The return trip through the lower trenches was quiet.

Without the blazing light of the Solar Anchors to illuminate the depths, the ocean floor had reclaimed its natural state—a vast, serene expanse of bioluminescent flora and dark, towering basalt formations. Blue and violet thermal moss glowed softly along the walls of the canyon, casting long, peaceful shadows over the path.

Commander Vaelen and his surviving mer-warriors trailed slightly behind Kyle’s group, carrying their injured comrades on improvised litters made of woven sea kelp. Though their scales were still scorched from the electrical currents and their movement was stiff, the looks they cast toward Kyle’s back were no longer filled with the cautious suspicion they had held when he first arrived in the sanctuary.

They looked at him with a deep, silent reverence. To the merfolk, who had lived under the looming threat of the Spire’s orbital strikes for generations, watching a surface Grand Archmage fall in single combat was nothing short of a miracle.

"You’re quiet," Yua murmured, bumping her shoulder gently against Kyle’s arm as they walked through the grand archway leading into the sanctuary’s outer courtyard.

"Just thinking," Kyle replied, keeping his pace steady. "Vane was just a forward commander. The Clover Council didn’t send their primary fleet because they thought the trench was already secured by the light grid. Next time, they won’t make the mistake of sending mages without heavy physical vanguards."

"Let them come," Yua said, her crimson eyes flashing with cold confidence. "They don’t know how to fight in the dark, and we have plenty of shadows to spare."

They stepped into the central hall of the royal sanctuary.

Queen Seraphina was standing at the edge of the elevated dais, her dark eyes scanning the returning group. Beside her stood two high-tier abyssal advisors, their hands resting nervously on their ceremonial tridents.

As Kyle, Yua, and Elara stepped into the light of the central thermal brazier, Seraphina’s gaze fell directly upon the dark, scorched mark on Kyle’s coat where Vane’s divine light had grazed him.

"Report," Seraphina commanded, though her deep voice carried a faint, uncharacteristic trace of tension.

Commander Vaelen stepped forward, dropping to one knee before the throne, his abyssal iron trident clattering against the wet stone floor.

"The Iron Shallows have been cleared, Sovereign," Vaelen announced, his voice ringing through the cavernous room. "All twenty-four Solar Anchors are destroyed. Grand Archmage Vane has been eliminated. The surface forces are in full retreat toward the upper clouds."

A stunned silence fell over the advisors. One of them dropped his ceremonial scroll, his jaw slack as he stared at Vaelen.

"Vane is dead?" the advisor gasped. "The butcher of the southern shelf... killed?"

Seraphina did not look at the advisor. Her sharp, dark eyes remained fixed on Kyle, taking in his relaxed posture, the quiet confidence in his eyes, and the two women standing proudly at his side. A slow, majestic smile spread across her face, radiating the ancient power of the abyssal throne.

"You delivered on your word, shadow user," Seraphina said, stepping down from the dais until she stood directly in front of Kyle. "The abyss owes you a debt today."

"No debts needed, Sovereign," Kyle replied, meeting her gaze without flinching. "Just keep your thermal currents warm and your borders secure. The Spire will come back, but when they do, we’ll be ready for them."

Seraphina nodded slowly, her hand resting on the pommel of her trident. "Then rest, Kyle Connor. Tonight, the sanctuary celebrates. Tomorrow, we prepare for the true war."
