Chapter 456: Purple Flames
### Chapter: The Sunken Sand and Purple Fire
The shift in environment was brutal and instantaneous.
One second, the cool, crushing pressure of the abyssal vault surrounded them; the next, a wall of dry, sweltering heat hit Kyle’s face like an open furnace. The gentle blue light of the spatial gateway vanished, replaced by a blinding, amber glare that scorched the eyes.
The ancient scroll hadn’t dropped them into the quiet courtyard of a serene regional outpost. They stood in the dead center of a massive, ruined stone plaza—the broken remains of a Lumia Kingdom regional fortress—surrounded on all sides by an endless, undulating sea of sun-bleached desert dunes.
And the ruins were far from abandoned.
A deafening chorus of guttural, rattling braying echoed across the sands. Hundreds—if not thousands—of heavy, quadrupeds surged over the collapsed stone walls of the outpost. They were massive, hulking beasts that looked like a terrifying cross between gaunt, sun-cured camels and heavy, thick-boned donkeys. Their hides were like cracked leather, their hooves heavy iron plates that kicked up blinding clouds of dust, and their eyes burned with an unnatural, unblinking yellow glare.
Before Yua or Elara could even adjust their footing on the hot, shifting sand, the lead pack of beasts threw back their elongated snouts.
*FWOOSH!*
A dozen thick streams of liquid, dark-purple fire erupted from their open maws, arching through the air toward the newly arrived group. The flames didn’t smell like wood smoke or oil; they smelled of acrid sulfur and rotten copper, turning the air so hot that the sand beneath the stream melted instantly into bubbling, black glass.
"Don’t let that flame touch your skin!" Kyle shouted, his voice cutting through the roar of the beasts. "It’s an elemental rot flame! It’ll eat through flesh and mana shields alike!"
Kyle reacted in a heartbeat. He lunged forward, thrusting his right arm out as the living metal of his gauntlet flared with violent, pitch-black shadow energy.
"Shadow Stitcher!"
Dozens of thick, ink-black tendrils erupted from his forearm, shooting across the sunlit plaza like striking vipers. Instead of blocking the purple fire head-on, the shadows whipped past the flames, impaling the throats and ribcages of the lead five beasts. With a sharp twist of his wrist, Kyle slammed the heavy creatures into one another, using their own armored bodies as a physical shield to smother the incoming streams of violet fire.
The impact was brutal. Bone cracked, sand flew, and the purple flames splattered uselessly across the leather hides of the dead beasts, hissing angrily as the flames burned out against their tough scales.
"Ugh, what revolting creatures!" Yua spat, her red eyes narrowing into sharp slits as she leaped five feet into the air.
She hovered for a fraction of a second above the charging herd, her long fingernails extending into razor-sharp red claws coated in dense, crimson blood-mana. She brought her hands down in a terrifying cross-slash, sending three overlapping arcs of pressurized blood-blades tearing through the front line.
*SLICE!*
The crimson blades carved clean through three of the camel-donkey hybrids, cleaving them from shoulder to flank. Yet, despite their organs spilling onto the hot sand, two of the severed beasts continued to thrash and snap their jaws, their yellow eyes devoid of pain or self-preservation.
"They don’t feel shock!" Yua called out, landing light on her feet beside Kyle, her red hair whipping in the hot desert wind. "You have to take their heads off completely or destroy their chests!"
"Allow me to cool this furnace," a serene, commanding voice echoed from behind them.
Queen Seraphina stepped forward, her dark royal trident held high. In the middle of a barren, scorched desert where one would expect an aquatic sovereign to be severely weakened, Seraphina’s eyes glowed with a deep, boundless blue light. She slammed the butt of her iron trident against the cracked stone floor of the plaza.
*BOOM!*
The ground trembled. Deep beneath the shifting sands, ancient subterranean water veins that had been trapped under the desert floor for centuries answered her call.
Four massive geysers of crystal-clear water erupted from the cracked stone, shooting fifty feet into the sunlit sky. The scalding desert air instantly turned into a thick, swirling curtain of cooling steam. Instead of letting the water drain uselessly into the thirsty sand, Seraphina raised her left hand, weaving her fingers through the air like a conductor.
The immense volume of water swirled around her, forming three massive, rotating rings of high-pressure fluid that orbited her regal frame like liquid shields.
"One does not need an ocean to command the tide," Seraphina said with a calm, dangerous smile. "The earth always holds water for its queen."
With a flick of her trident, one of the massive rings expanded outward, slamming into a pack of thirty charging beasts with the force of a crashing tidal wave. The sheer hydraulic pressure crushed their heavy ribcages, washing the beasts fifty yards backward into the outer dunes and dousing their purple fires before they could even spark in their throats.
Elara stood beside Seraphina, her hands moving in rapid, fluid spell-shapes. Her aquatic daggers floated beside her shoulders, spinning like blue fan blades.
"Water Bolt: Piercing Needle!" Elara chanted, her voice crisp and precise.
Hundreds of needle-thin darts of compressed water shot from her spinning daggers, raining down upon the horde like a torrential storm. Each needle struck with surgical accuracy, piercing the soft eye sockets and brain stems of the charging creatures. Beast after beast collapsed into the sand, their yellow eyes going dark.
Yet, despite the absolute devastation Kyle and his group unleashed in those first three minutes, the desert horizon didn’t clear.
The guttural braying only grew louder, echoing off the distant, crumbling stone towers of the regional outpost. From beyond the surrounding sand dunes, hundreds more of the purple-flamed beasts crested the ridges, their heavy hooves causing the entire ruined plaza to vibrate.
Kyle stepped up beside Seraphina, his dark coat heavy in the heat, his pupils slitted as he scanned the seemingly endless horizon. He brought his shadow blade around in a wide, horizontal arc, decapitating two beasts that had managed to leap over Seraphina’s water ring.
"These things aren’t wild animals," Kyle muttered, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with the back of his gauntlet. "Look at their necks."
Yua landed beside him, her claws dripping with dark beast blood. She glanced down at one of the decapitated corpses near her boots. Heavy, iron collars studded with faint, glowing red runes were bolted directly into the muscle of their thick necks.
"They’re bred," Yua noted, her brow furrowing. "Or tamed. Someone is herding them toward the kingdom’s borders."
"And they’re far too tough for standard wild fauna," Elara added, stepping up to Kyle’s left while maintaining her defensive water shield. "Even with high-tier piercing spells, their muscle density is absorbing half the kinetic impact. A normal merchant caravan or regional garrison would have been completely wiped out by this numbers advantage in minutes."
Kyle looked past the endless swarm of beasts, his dark eyes focusing on the far horizon beyond the desert plains.
Miles away, sitting atop a massive plateau of white stone, was the central capital of the Lumia Kingdom. But it looked nothing like the sprawling, peaceful white city Kyle remembered from his previous travels through the upper region.
The towering white spires that once reached gracefully toward the clouds were now wrapped in thick, iron reinforcing bands and heavy defensive netting. Massive, crimson war-banners fluttered from the battlements, and huge scrying arrays hovered in the sky above the city walls, casting pale, flickering blue barrier grids over the surrounding territory. The air above the kingdom was thick with dark, oily smoke rising from what looked like massive forge fires lining the outer district walls.
The kingdom had transformed from a seat of magic and learning into an absolute, fortified war machine.
"It’s going to be a while before we actually reach those gates," Kyle frowned, his thumb flicking the hilt of his shadow blade as he prepped his shadow core for another massive wave. "The kingdom has undergone some serious changes since I was last here. They’ve built an entire war perimeter around the region."
"Well," Seraphina said softly, her trident glowing with renewed blue light as another geyser burst from the sand beneath them to replenish her water rings, "at least we won’t be bored on the walk there."
Yua let out a sharp, predatory laugh, her red claws flaring with crimson blood-mana once more as she fell into a low combat stance beside him. "Let them come. I need to stretch my legs anyway after sitting in that damp cave for so long."
Kyle didn’t answer with words. He adjusted his grip on his dark blade, raised his shadow-draped gauntlet, and stepped forward into the oncoming swarm, leading his party straight through the purple fire and iron hooves toward the changing kingdom ahead.
"I wanted to see that damn bastard’s reaction, but guess it’ll have to wait." Kyle slightly smiled, the image of a certain individual I his head.
