Chapter 457: Deadly Corruption
Deep within the high stone fortress of the Lumia Kingdom, the air was still and remarkably cold.
Inside a grand chamber framed by polished marble pillars, a young man stood before a tall, gilded mirror. His dark, neatly styled black hair framed a sharp, unreadable face dominated by dark, calculating eyes. He was dressed in immaculate gold and black attire—a high-collared black dress shirt layered beneath a finely tailored vest with intricate floral embroidery, wrapped in a heavy dark jacket boasting wide, shimmering gold lapels. Around his throat, a dark ribbon tie was secured with a pristine golden broach, gleaming under the ambient light of the chandelier overhead.
Beside him, resting upright against a marble stand, was a heavy golden sword. Its long, lethal blade was completely sheathed in a sleek, deep black material that looked like frozen ink, yet a faint, golden hum vibrated through the floorboards. The weapon pulsed with a radiant, divine energy, straining against its dark scabbard as if a living soul were trapped inside the metal.
The heavy oak doors of the chamber burst open with a dull thud.
A palace scout wearing sleek, form-fitting black armor slid onto one knee across the polished floor, his head bowed low in deep reverence. His chest was heaving, covered in a fine layer of gray dust from the outer walls.
"Your Majesty!" the scout reported hastily, his voice echoing off the high stone ceiling. "An immediate anomaly has been recorded in the perimeter desert! The western beast horde... their forward push has halted!"
The young man didn’t turn around immediately. He adjusted the gold lapel of his jacket in the reflection, his movements slow and deliberate.
"Halted?" King Troy spoke, his voice cold, calm, and holding an innate weight that chilled the quiet chamber. "Those rabid chimeras do not stop for barricades. What broke their line?"
"The regional outpost ruins, sire," the scout answered, keeping his face firmly pressed toward the floor. "Four unknown figures emerged from a spatial distortion right in the center of the surge. The horde’s pathing has completely collapsed inward around them. They are carving a path straight through the frontline."
A faint, subtle smile touched the corners of King Troy’s cold lips.
"Four figures..." Troy murmured softly, his dark eyes glinting in the mirror’s reflection. "So he’s finally returned. I was getting impatient."
He turned away from the glass, his sharp gaze shifting toward the golden sword leaning against the marble pillar.
At the sound of Kyle’s long-awaited arrival being spoken aloud, the divine weapon shuddered violently. A sharp burst of golden light flared from the seams of the deep black scabbard, sending a low, musical ring through the hall—as if the blade itself were eager to be drawn, answering the call of its intended target across the desert.
Troy reached out, his gloved fingers brushing lightly over the dark scabbard to still its vibration. "Patience, old friend. You’ll have your meeting soon enough."
Out on the scorched plains beyond the regional ruins, the air was a blinding, suffocating haze of dust, steam, and sulfur.
The steady rhythm of combat had turned the ruined plaza into a bloody crucible. Heavy, leather-skinned beasts lay scattered across the sand in piles, their dark blood sizzling as it met the hot stone floor. Yet, for every dozen creatures Kyle and his group cut down, three more crested the sand dunes, their hooves thrashing the earth into a cloud of amber dust.
Elara sidestepped a charging chimera, her aquatic daggers spinning in tight, blue arcs that severed the beast’s hamstrings. She wiped a line of grit from her cheek, her chest rising and falling in quick, measured breaths as she scanned the surrounding desert.
"This doesn’t make any sense!" Elara called out over the roar of the horde, her voice laced with deep frustration. "Look at their distribution! Their numbers aren’t dropping, and their mana signatures are completely irregular! Half of these creatures don’t even possess a natural core flow—it’s as if their energy is being fed from an external array!"
Kyle cleaved through the skull of a leaping beast with a swift, vertical stroke of his dark blade, landing heavily on the stone. "She’s right. Their movements aren’t instinctual. They’re being anchored to this coordinate."
"They’re just dumb beasts!" Yua shouted, her crimson claws tearing through the throat of another heavy chimera. "Keep cutting until the sand is empty!"
Suddenly, the ground beneath Elara’s left heel caved in.
A massive, gaunt beast that had been buried shallow beneath the shifting dunes erupted from the sand directly at her flank. It didn’t attempt to bite or strike with its heavy iron hooves. The moment its snout cleared the dust, its throat bulged, and a thick, concentrated stream of dark-purple fire spewed from its open maw at point-blank range.
"Elara!" Seraphina called out, turning her trident—but it was too late.
The violet flame struck Elara full in the shoulder, tearing through her water barrier like dry parchment.
*FOOM!*
A harrowing, piercing scream tore from Elara’s throat—a raw sound of absolute agony that echoed across the desert floor. The impact knocked her off her feet, sending her rolling across the scorching sand as the purple fire clung to her pale skin like molten tar. It didn’t just burn her flesh; it gnawed at her mana channels, a cold, void-like corruption spreading rapid, bruised-purple veins outward from her shoulder.
"Elara!" Yua yelled, her eyes flashing blood-red as she abandoned her stance and sprinted toward her fallen companion.
Seeing the high-tier spellcaster down on the sand, five nearby chimeras bared their teeth, their yellow eyes gleaming as they lunged together to crush her beneath their hooves.
"Get back!" Kyle roared.
He didn’t use shadow tendrils. He thrust his gauntleted hand forward, unleashing a roaring wave of jet-black demon flame straight from his core. The dark fire erupted in a towering wall between the beasts and Elara, consuming the five chimeras instantly. The dark flames didn’t just burn them—it incinerated their hides and bones into black ash before they even hit the ground.
Kyle leapt over the ash pile, his dark coat sweeping around his legs as he planted himself firmly in front of Elara, his shadow blade spinning in a wide, defensive circle that repelled three more charging beasts.
Yua reached Elara’s side, her hands trembling as she reached down to grab her. "Elara, get up! Hold onto me!"
"Don’t touch the flame, Yua!" Seraphina’s voice cut in sharply.
The ocean queen materialized beside them in a swirl of pressurized water, slamming her trident into the sand to create a thick, swirling dome of fluid around the three women.
"Cover us alongside Kyle!" Seraphina commanded Yua, her tone firm and unyielding despite the chaotic battle around them. "The flame on her skin carries a corrosive curse! If you touch it with bare hands, it will leap to your blood channels! I will use the deep ocean currents to wash the corruption out!"
Yua bit her lip until it bled, glancing at Elara’s pained face, then gave a sharp, resolute nod. "Don’t let her die!"
Yua spun around, leaping out of the water dome to join Kyle, her claws flaring with furious, blood-red mana as the two of them held off the endless tide of beasts.
Inside the protective dome of water, Seraphina dropped to one knee beside Elara. She laid her trident across her lap and placed both palms an inch above Elara’s ruined shoulder. Cool, glowing blue water streamed from Seraphina’s hands, wrapping around the burning purple rot like a soothing bandages.
Elara lay on her side, her teeth clamped tight as tears of agony cut paths through the dust on her face. The soothing touch of Seraphina’s aquatic power cooled the surface heat, but deep inside her shoulder, the purple fire fought back, churning like a dark poison.
"I hope this works..." Elara managed to choke out, a tight, dry sigh escaping her lips as uncertainty clouded her mind.
She was a strong spellcaster. She knew her attributes, her skills, and her capacity for pain. But staring at the residual purple sparks flickering beneath Seraphina’s water, a creeping, hollow unease settled deep in her chest.
The flame didn’t feel like wild elemental magic. It felt like a void—a cold, ravenous hole that ate away at everything it touched, seeking to consume her mana, her skin, and her life until nothing remained.
"Focus on my voice, child of the deep," Seraphina whispered softly, pushing more of her ancestral ocean mana into the wound, forcing the purple veins to stop their advance. "You are bound to a demon lord now. A little desert spark is not allowed to take you from us."
Outside the water barrier, Kyle brought his gauntlet down, crushing another beast’s skull into the stone. His dark eyes flicked back toward Elara for a fraction of a second, his grip on his hilt tightening until his knuckles turned white.
They needed to clear this desert, and they needed to do it fast.
