Chapter 467: Dead Ravine

  • Next Chapter

The descent from the obsidian ridge into the suffocating ocean of crimson fog was short-lived.

Before the four of them could plunge deeper into the dark, rocky ravine on foot, a low, mechanical hum vibrated through the dense air, rattling the jagged volcanic glass beneath their boots. It wasn’t the sound of blood magic or the screeches of subterranean chimeras. It was the smooth, refined purr of high-grade spatial machinery—an engine running on raw, pressurized crystal mana.

Out from a hidden spatial rift torn through the edge of the cliff side glided a sleek, low-slung, high-tech convertible. Its body was forged from seamless, polished matte-black alloy that absorbed the ambient red light of the toxic fog, giving it the appearance of a dark phantom floating over the rough terrain. Sharp crimson LED accents ran down its aggressive front grill and side skirts, while four heavy-duty, magnetic-levitation wheels hovered inches off the jagged stone, humming with blue energy.

The sleek driver’s door swung open vertically with a soft hiss of released pressure.

Reze leaned out from the leather driver’s seat, pulling down a pair of dark tactical goggles onto her neck. Her sharp grey eyes swept over the group, a confident, slightly mischievous smirk playing on her lips as she tossed a metallic key-fob into the air and caught it cleanly.

"Did you four really plan on walking three hundred miles through a toxic dead zone?" Reze asked, resting her elbow on the reinforced door frame. "Kyle, I know you like doing everything the hard, painful way, but we have a budget and a deadline."

Kyle caught the key-fob, his slitted eyes narrowing as he inspected the sleek vehicle. "Where did you get a spatial-grade cruiser, Reze? The kingdom’s royal garage doesn’t carry high-tier tech like this."

"It’s a custom piece from my private stash," Reze replied smoothly, stepping out of the car. Her high-tech leather coat fluttered in the heavy wind. "Reinforced titanium-carbide plating, anti-magic shock absorbers, and a localized air-purification array built directly into the cabin shield. Most importantly, it runs on dual-elemental cores. It can cross the Dead Ravine in a fraction of the time it would take your boots to melt on that volcanic rock."

Yua walked around the front of the convertible, trailing a long crimson claw over the pristine matte-black hood with an appreciative whistle. "Now this is more like it. I was already getting sick of walking."

"Is it safe against blood-rot?" Falcon asked cautiously, her dark brown tails twitching as she inspected the levitation wheels. "The fog inside the Dead Ravine eats through standard metals in minutes."

"The exterior is coated in a liquid-ether resin," Reze explained, sliding into the passenger seat and opening a glowing holographic console built into the dashboard. "It repels acidic vapors and spatial friction. I’ll drive us through the outer perimeter, but once we enter the narrow choke points of the ravine, you’re taking the wheel, Kyle."

"Get in," Kyle said, vaulting directly into the driver’s seat without using the door.

Seraphina and Falcon took the back seats, while Yua hopped into the middle, resting her elbows on the back of the front chairs. With a heavy thud, the vertical doors sealed shut, and a translucent, dome-shaped energy barrier snapped into place over the open convertible top. Instantly, the harsh, metallic reek of copper and sulfur was cut off, replaced by a cool, clean stream of purified air circulating through the cabin.

Kyle gripped the sleek, leather-wrapped steering wheel. The holographic dashboard flared to life, displaying a three-dimensional terrain map of the Dead Ravine, complete with real-time density readings of the crimson fog.

"Hold on," Kyle muttered.

He slammed his foot down on the mana-accelerator.

The black convertible lurched forward with terrifying speed. The dual-elemental cores roared, blasting a surge of bright blue spatial energy from the rear dual-exhaust ports. The car shot off the edge of the obsidian cliff, flying through the air for a breath-taking second before the levitation wheels caught the thermal drafts of the ravine below, stabilizing smoothly as the vehicle tore straight into the ocean of red fog at blinding speed.

The Dead Ravine was an brutal, suffocating trench carved into the floor of the Crimson Ridge. The rock walls towered hundreds of feet high on either side, slick with dark, acidic sludge and lined with sharp obsidian formations that jutted out like rows of rotten teeth.

Normally, navigating such a narrow, treacherous gap on foot meant dealing with continuous ambush traps, hidden pressure plates, and toxic gas vents. But at two hundred miles per hour, the sleek convertible transformed the nightmare trek into a high-speed breach.

"Scouts at two o’clock!" Falcon shouted from the back, her golden eyes piercing through the heavy red mist.

Ahead, three high-tier blood scouts clad in red bone armor were perched atop a jutting stone pillar, holding heavy bone cross-bows primed with dark blood-arrows. They had barely raised their weapons when the black phantom car burst through the red clouds like an iron bullet.

"I’ve got them," Yua laughed.

She leaned out over the side barrier of the moving car, her pale right hand sweeping through the air. Five razor-sharp threads of condensed crimson mana shot from her fingertips, slicing through the base of the stone pillar. The rock collapsed instantly, sending the three scouts screaming into the dark abyss below before they could fire a single shot.

"Keep your eyes on the road, Kyle!" Reze warned, her fingers flying across the holographic console as red warning indicators began flashing along the dashboard. "The Blood Moon Clan set up a localized blood-tripwire grid across the floor of the canyon. If we hit one at this speed, the spatial shockwave will flip the vehicle!"

"Falcon, clear the road," Kyle ordered, his eyes locked onto the winding trench ahead as he threw the car into a hard drift around a sharp volcanic turn, the magnetic levitation tires spraying bright blue sparks against the obsidian walls.

"On it!" Falcon stood up in the back seat, her dark brown skin glowing as four emerald-green poison flames ignited around her four tails.

With a fierce whip of her body, Falcon launched four concentrated spheres of green poison fire straight down the path of the car. The green flames spread across the canyon floor like a wave of liquid acid, instantly melting through the invisible blood-threads and spatial tripwires stretched across the rocks. The red magic arrays detonated in harmless, soft pops of smoke seconds before the black convertible sped over them.

"Clean shot!" Falcon yelled, grinning as her green fire cleared a wide, safe path through the dense fog.

"We have heavy energy signatures ahead!" Seraphina called out, her azure ocean trident glowing bright blue as she stood beside Falcon. "The fog is thickening. The ravine floor is flooded with acidic blood-sludge!"

Directly in front of them, the narrow ravine widened into a massive, cavernous trench where the ground was entirely submerged in a boiling, dark red lake of blood-rot sludge. Floating in the middle of the caustic lake were dozens of massive, blood-corrupted chimeras—monstrous, multi-legged beasts made of fused bones and rotten flesh, bred by the Blood Moon Clan to guard the sector.

The chimeras turned their glowing yellow eyes toward the approaching vehicle, letting out deafening, wet roars that echoed off the canyon walls. Several of the beasts raised their long, bone-spiked tails, firing a volley of acidic blood-spit straight toward the speeding car.

"Seraphina, shield!" Kyle commanded, pressing his foot harder onto the mana pedal.

Seraphina slammed the butt of her ocean trident onto the floorboards of the convertible. "Ocean Sanctuary: Flowing Mirror!"

A dense, rotating barrier of pure, pressurized sea water burst outward from the car, forming an impenetrable, spherical bubble around the black convertible. The incoming torrents of acidic blood-spit slammed into the water shield, sizzled loudly, and were instantly neutralized by the pure elemental energy.

Instead of slowing down, Kyle pointed the nose of the high-tech convertible straight at the largest chimera blocking the center of the flooded path.

"Reze, dump all core power into the front ramming shield!" Kyle yelled.

"Way ahead of you!" Reze slammed a bright red override button on the dashboard.

The black alloy grill at the front of the car extended forward, locked in place, and became wrapped in a shimmering, dark-purple spatial force-field.

*BOOM!*

The sleek convertible hit the surface of the boiling blood-sludge lake without losing a fraction of its momentum. The magnetic levitation wheels glided over the liquid like a speedboat cutting through ocean waves. The car slammed directly into the chest of the giant chimera, the spatial ramming shield completely obliterating the beast’s ribcage and core in a violent explosion of dark mist and shattered bone.

The convertible plowed through the remaining beasts, scattering their broken forms across the caustic lake, cutting a straight, unstoppable line through the Blood Moon Clan’s frontline defenses.

"Hahaha! Now *that* is how you break a perimeter!" Yua cheered, wiping a drop of green stray fluid off her cheek as the car shot out of the flooded lake and back onto solid ground.

As the heavy crimson fog finally began to thin out near the far exit of the Dead Ravine, the rough, chaotic terrain smoothed out into a wide, dark slate plateau.

Kyle gradually eased his foot off the mana accelerator, allowing the high-grade engine to cool down from its high-speed sprint. The black convertible glided to a smooth stop near the base of a giant, ancient stone archway that marked the boundary of Sector Two.

Reze unbuckled her belt and let out a long breath, checking the diagnostic readings on her screen. "Core temperatures are stable. The resin coating took zero damage from the blood-sludge. We just covered a journey that would have taken three days on foot in less than forty-five minutes."

Kyle turned off the ignition, the low hum of the levitation wheels fading into the heavy quiet of the sector. He looked back at Falcon, Seraphina, and Yua, who were all checking their gear and gathering their mana.

"This was just the outer gate," Kyle said softly, his dark slitted eyes fixed on the towering archway ahead. "Reze’s car got us through the Dead Ravine, but the sectors ahead are heavily fortified with blood-arrays that block spatial vehicles. From here on out, the terrain gets tighter and the enemies get stronger."

Falcon hopped out of the car, her golden eyes scanning the dark slate plateau. "We saved a massive amount of time and mana thanks to this ride. My poison fire is still at full capacity."

"The Lieutenant definitely knows we’re inside his domain now," Seraphina added, stepping down beside Falcon, her trident held ready. "Destroying that frontline guard unit will trigger the regional alarms."

Kyle stepped out of the black convertible, handing the key-fob back to Reze, who pressed a button that dissolved the vehicle into a tiny, compact spatial cube that she tucked neatly into her tactical pouch.

"Let them trigger the alarms," Kyle said, his voice cold and steady as he drew his dark coat tight. "It just saves us the trouble of hunting them down."

With the Dead Ravine behind them, the four of them turned their eyes toward the ominous, towering shadows of Sector Two—the Bone Church.
