Chapter 469: The Bone Church (2)

  • Next Chapter

The Vault of Marrow erupted into a violent storm of kinetic force and raw elemental mana the second Kyle’s boots slammed into the polished bone floor.

The four blood-grafted elites didn’t move like standard lumbering constructs. Despite their towering nine-foot frames, their movements were terrifyingly fluid—their spatial-suppression arrays humming with a heavy, pitch-black resonance that locked down the local fabric of reality, preventing short-range spatial leaps or instantaneous warps.

"Intruders bleed for the Spire!" the elite commander roared, bringing its six-foot bone cleavers down in a brutal, dual-hand strike that cut through the air with a deafening sonic boom.

Kyle didn’t attempt to dodge out of the room. He leaned his upper body back just far enough for the heavy bone blades to whistle an inch past his nose, the sheer wind pressure splitting the stone floor open behind him. With his weight centered, Kyle drove his right heel into the ground, pivoting inside the giant’s wide guard. His dark gauntlet flared with concentrated pitch-black demon fire as he slammed a heavy, upward palm strike directly under the commander’s reinforced ribcage.

*BOOM!*

The black fire exploded on impact, burning through the thick chitinous Void armor and sending the nine-foot giant stumbling backward, its chest plate smoking and blackening into brittle ash.

To his left, Falcon surged into action like a green phantom. Her four dark-brown tails whipped through the air like lethal flails, each one tipped with dense, liquid spheres of emerald poison fire. The two elites on the left raised their massive bone forearms to block her approach, but Falcon didn’t strike their armor directly.

"Melt, you ugly freaks!" Falcon barked.

She snapped her wrists downward, splashing the green poison fire over the joints of their knees and elbows.

*CSSSSSSHHHHHH!*

The toxic, acidic nature of her green flames immediately bit into the marrow-fused flesh, eating through the thick tendons and bone rivets binding their limbs together. The two elites let out horrific, metallic shrieks as their knees buckled, their legs dissolving into bubbling green sludge beneath their massive weight.

Before they could collapse to the floor, Seraphina appeared above them. Floating on a disk of swirling blue water, she held her ocean trident with both hands, her eyes burning with icy, sovereign authority.

"Ocean Art: Abyssal Piercer!" Seraphina commanded softly.

She thrust her trident downward. Two razor-thin, supersonic spears of pressurized sea water shot from the prongs, punching clean through the foreheads of the two kneeling elites. The sheer pressure blew out the backs of their skulls, killing them instantly before their spatial suppression arrays could trigger a self-destruct sequence.

Meanwhile, Yua was having the time of her life against the fourth elite.

The creature swung its jagged bone blades in a frantic, wild flurry, trying to keep the nimble red-haired demon at bay. But Yua moved like water slipping between fingers. She ducked under a horizontal slash, stepped over a low sweep, and ducked beneath a backhand—her crimson eyes glowing with wild, predatory glee.

"Is that all you’ve got?" Yua taunted, her razor-sharp teeth bared in a fierce grin. "Your swings are slow, your posture is terrible, and your blood smells like rotten swamp water!"

She closed the distance in a fraction of a second, her pale hands trailing long, glowing claws of condensed crimson blood-mana.

*SLASH-SLASH-SLASH-SLASH!*

In the span of a single heartbeat, Yua landed seventeen precise claw strikes across the elite’s neck and torso, shredding through its Void chitin like paper. She ended the combination with a brutal spinning heel-kick that drove the creature’s dying frame straight into the far bone wall, shattering its spine into a thousand pieces.

Kyle didn’t waste a single second watching his team work.

While the elites were being systematically dismantled, he bounded off the far wall, launching himself forty feet into the air toward the center of the chamber where the massive, pulsing sphere of dark red blood-crystal hung suspended over the pit of boiling marrow.

"Snow! Target the central mana nexus!" Kyle ordered internally as he drew his dark shadow blade in mid-air.

’Target locked at the intersection of the primary nerve cables,’ Snow’s calm, precise voice echoed instantly in his mind. ’Strike with maximum demon fire to prevent core feedback.’

Kyle gripped the hilt of his blade with both hands. Pitch-black demon flames erupted along the steel, expanding into a ten-foot blade of pure, ravenous dark energy.

"Break!" Kyle roared, swinging his blade downward with all the force in his body.

*CRUNCH-BOOOOOOM!*

The black shadow blade cleaved straight through the center of the pulsing blood-crystal. The dark red core shattered into millions of glowing fragments, its internal energy violently collapsing in on itself before being completely devoured by Kyle’s black demon fire.

The moment the blood-crystal died, a deep, shuddering tremor echoed through the entire Vault of Marrow. The heavy red nerve cables running through the ceiling snapped and withered like dying vines, spilling dark, inert fluid onto the stone floor.

Far above them, the massive, iron-bound bone gates blocking the corridor to the cathedral’s middle sector let out a loud, grinding groan as their defensive barriers flickered, died, and slowly swung open.

Kyle landed lightly on his feet in a low crouch, his dark coat settling around him as the pitch-black flames on his blade slowly faded.

"First core down," Kyle said, standing up and sweeping his slitted dark gaze across the ruined chamber.

Falcon walked over, wiping a line of toxic green residue from her sharp claws onto her pant leg. Her four brown tails swished restlessly behind her back as she looked up at the open gates leading deeper into the cathedral. "That was almost too smooth. If Vladimir built this place as a replica of his old stronghold, he wouldn’t just leave four elites to guard a major sector core."

"He didn’t," Seraphina noted, stepping down beside them as her water disk dissolved into mist. She held up her trident, pointing toward the wide corridor beyond the opened gates. "Look at the floor."

Kyle and Yua walked over to the threshold.

Beyond the outer gates lay the **Gallery of the Damned**—the second major ring of the Bone Church.

Unlike the dark, claustrophobic catacombs they had just cleared, the Gallery was a sprawling, double-decked grand hall lined with towering stained-glass windows made of ground ruby and bone dust. But what caught their attention wasn’t the haunting architecture; it was the floor.

The entire stone walkway was covered in a thick, three-inch layer of slowly moving, dark red liquid that pulsed like a living circulatory system. Thousands of tiny, pale white hands made of compressed bone ash were constantly reaching up from the liquid floor, clawing at the empty air as if seeking something to drag down into the depths.

"A blood-submersion field," Yua said, her red claws clicking together in interest. "If you step into that liquid without higher blood control, it drains your stamina and fuses your soles to the stone."

’Scans confirm,’ Snow added in Kyle’s mind. ’The second sector operates under an automated soul-drain array. The liquid on the floor is fed directly by the second core chamber—the Sanctum of Whispers. Furthermore, I am detecting a high-tier commander signature waiting in the center of the hall.’

Kyle stepped up to the edge of the liquid floor, his dark slitted eyes fixing on the far end of the long grand hall.

Standing on an elevated bone dais three hundred yards down the hall was a tall, slender figure draped in high-ranking Blood Moon robes of deep crimson and gold. In his right hand, he held a long, pale bone staff topped with a skull that breathed violet smoke; in his left, he held a dark iron parchment scroll covered in glowing blood-runes.

Beside the commander stood twenty elite **Blood Moon Knights**, fully encased in dark red steel plate, holding towering tower shields and spiked war-hammers.

"Kyle Conner," the commander spoke, his voice carrying through the massive hall with a raspy, echoing magic that made the pale bone hands on the floor twitch wildly. "The abandoned pupil of Lord Vladimir. We knew your stubborn feet would lead you to this holy cathedral."

Kyle took a single, calm step forward, his boot stopping just an inch above the pulsing red floor. "If you know who I am, then you know how this ends. Get out of my way, or I’ll burn this entire cathedral into ash with you inside it."

The Blood Moon commander let out a dry, rattling laugh that sounded like glass grinding against metal. "Burn it? Boy, you stand inside a masterpiece of spatial engineering! This cathedral was designed by Lord Vladimir himself to harvest lower-world souls and refine them for the Spire’s great convergence. Every drop of blood you spill here only feeds the roots of our master’s domain!"

The commander raised his pale bone staff, slamming it hard against the stone dais.

*CLANG!*

The thick, dark red liquid covering the floor immediately began to boil. Thousands of pale bone hands burst upward from the fluid, forming a swirling, terrifying wall of bone-armor that wrapped around the twenty Blood Moon Knights, transforming them into towering, twelve-foot bone-juggernauts wielding massive spiked hammers.

"You cleared the Outer Ring," the commander sneered, his eyes glowing with a dark violet light. "But you will not cross the Gallery of the Damned! Here, your precious friends will be drained of their mana, and your shadow gauntlet will become the raw material for our lieutenant’s final ritual!"

Yua stepped up beside Kyle, her red eyes burning with lethal intent as dark blood-mana flared violently around her arms. "Can I tear his tongue out first? His voice is giving me a headache."

"Go ahead," Kyle said softly, his dark gauntlet erupting once more in a roaring pillar of pitch-black demon fire that pushed back the surrounding crimson mist.

Falcon stepped up on his right, her dark brown skin glowing as all four of her tails exploded with intense, blinding emerald poison fire, the toxic heat causing the boiling blood on the floor to sizzle and evaporate on contact.

Seraphina raised her ocean trident on his left, a towering wall of clear, pressurized sea water swirling around her form like a protective dragon.

"We break the second core," Kyle commanded, his voice dropping into a cold, absolute register that echoed through the grand hall. "Move!"

The strike team surged forward into the Gallery of the Damned, charging straight toward the second ring of the Bone Church.
