Chapter 496: An Anchor
The second ley-line bridge felt colder beneath their boots than the first.
As Kyle led the group across the glowing ribbon of blue spatial mana, the air grew increasingly heavy with a razor-thin frost that settled onto their clothes like needles. The endless indigo twilight of Tier Four gave way to a silver haze, drifting up from the third floating landmass like smoke from a quiet fire.
When they stepped off the mana thread and onto the firm ground of the third plateau, the bridge behind them dissolved with the familiar, quiet snap of a broken thread.
The terrain here was completely different from the dark volcanic basalt of the previous island. The entire plateau—spanning nearly a mile across—was a single, jagged slab of translucent silver ice. Beneath the frozen surface, dark shadows of ancient, trapped creatures were visible, frozen mid-stride in a sea of solid frost.
In the center of the frozen expanse stood the second black obsidian monolith, its silver runes flickering dimly beneath a thick crust of blue ice.
"This ice isn’t natural," Falcon observed quietly. Her boots crunched softly against the pale surface as she adjusted her stance. She kept her four dark brown tails wrapped close around her waist, their tips emitting a low, steady green ember to keep the freezing air from numbing her limbs. "It’s dense. It feels like trying to walk through solid iron."
"It’s high-compression spatial frost," Seraphina said, stepping up to Kyle’s right. She held her ocean trident close, her deep blue eyes reflecting the metallic glare of the ground. She didn’t expand her water domain outward; doing so here would only give the environmental cold more mass to freeze. "The cold is actively draining the ambient kinetic energy from the air. If we stay still for too long, our meridians will lock up."
Yua flexed her fingers, wincing slightly as a thin layer of frost attempted to form over her knuckles. She pulled her dark red blood-mana inward, circulating it rapidly through her chest and arms to keep her circulation moving. "So no long speeches. We find whatever is guarding this monolith, crush it, and move to the third node."
Kyle stood at the front of the group, his dark coat heavy against his legs. He didn’t shift his stance, nor did he draw his shadow blade. His dark, slitted eyes swept across the vast sheet of silver ice, tracking the faint, rhythmic pulses of mana vibrating beneath their boots.
Inside his chest, his dark core absorbed the ambient cold without resistance, filtering the atmospheric pressure into quiet, stable energy.
"The guardian isn’t waiting on the surface," Kyle said, his voice flat and clear in the biting air. "It’s underneath."
Before Yua could ask what he meant, a low, groaning crack echoed from beneath the ice.
CRACK-CRACK-CRACKLE!
The entire silver plateau shuddered. Long, spiderweb fissures snapped across the frozen floor, stretching out from the base of the obsidian monolith toward their feet. From deep within the translucent depths of the ice, two gargantuan shapes began to rise, their massive forms blurring the pale light beneath the surface.
With a deafening explosion of frozen shrapnel, the surface shattered upward.
Two massive, serpent-like beasts erupted into the freezing air, towering fifty feet above the plateau. They were forged entirely from dark blue, high-density glacial ice, their bodies lined with sharp, crystal fins that hummed with a high-pitched, metallic frequency. Their heads were broad and flat, featuring long, needle-like mandibles that dripped with a liquid frost so cold it turned the surrounding air into white mist before touching the ground.
"Glacial Dread-Worms," Kyle identified calmly as the shower of ice rained down around them. "Formed from condensed spatial frost. Their bodies absorb kinetic impacts and reflect standard physical force back at the attacker."
"Reflect physical strikes?" Yua gritted her teeth, a fierce smirk breaking across her face despite the warning. "Guess I’ll just have to hit them faster than they can reflect it!"
"Don’t," Kyle instructed, his voice unyielding. "You’ll shatter your own hands against their plates. Seraphina, use your sea-thunder to disrupt their internal frost alignment. Falcon, use your green fire to create a thermal fracture across their spine. Once the temperature shifts, the kinetic reflection fails."
"Got it," Falcon nodded, her dark brown tails flaring out behind her in a wide, energetic fan. The green poison flames along her fur burned brighter, fighting off the silver haze.
"Understood," Seraphina replied, raising her trident as three condensed ribbons of ocean-water formed around the steel tines.
The two Glacial Dread-Worms let out a high-pitched, vibrating screech that shook the icy floor beneath their boots. The left serpent whipped its massive, crystal-finned tail through the air, sending a wave of razor-sharp ice blades flying directly at the team.
"Domain up!" Seraphina called out.
She slammed the butt of her trident into the silver floor. A thick ring of high-pressure sea-water erupted around the group, infused with bright streaks of violet thunder. As the ice blades struck the water ring, the violet thunder surged along their sharp edges, shattering the projectile ice into harmless powder before it could reach them.
Without breaking her stance, Seraphina flicked her wrist, shooting two liquid ribbons of water straight toward the left serpent’s neck. The water wrapped tightly around the creature’s glacial plates, the violet thunder humming deep within its frozen frame.
"Falcon, now!" Seraphina barked.
Falcon launched herself into the air, using the momentum of her four tails to propel her body above the locked serpent. She spun mid-air, bringing all four tails down in a heavy, sweeping arc.
"Poison Fire: Thermal Collapse!" Falcon shouted.
A concentrated wave of intense, endothermic green fire slammed into the exact spot where Seraphina’s water ribbons were locked. The sudden, violent shift between the violet thunder’s heat and the endothermic frost tore through the serpent’s internal structure.
CRACK-THUMP!
Deep, glowing red fractures snapped across the left Dread-Worm’s neck. The kinetic reflection layer collapsed instantly as the glacial plates turned brittle and dark.
Yua didn’t wait for another command. She blurred across the slippery floor, her boots barely touching the silver ice, and leaped thirty feet straight into the air. Her pale hands were completely encased in a thick, roaring aura of dark purple blood-electricity.
"Blood-Break: Spine Crusher!" Yua screamed.
She drove both fists straight into the fractured neck of the left serpent.
KA-BOOOOOOM!
The fifty-foot beast didn’t just break—it detonated into a massive shower of blue ice chips and sparkling silver mist. The kinetic force traveled down its entire length, pulverizing its core matrix before the remains hit the ground.
The second Dread-Worm, seeing its mate destroyed in seconds, turned its glowing white eyes toward Kyle. It hissed violently, its needle-like mandibles opening wide as it gathered a massive sphere of pale-blue, condensed spatial frost inside its throat.
It prepared to unleash a wave of absolute cold that would freeze everything within two hundred yards into solid ice.
Kyle walked forward, his steps slow, deliberate, and completely unfazed by the gathering storm.
He didn’t execute a spatial step. He simply raised his left hand, opening his pitch-black gauntlet toward the ascending beast. The Lightning-Core Spatial Ring on his index finger flared with a deep, midnight-black light, drawing out the stored volcanic thunder and spatial kinetic weight he had absorbed from the previous floor’s Legate.
"You’re too slow," Kyle said softly.
He closed his gauntlet into a tight fist, driving a straight, short-range spatial shockwave through the air.
Void-Thunder Style: First Form—Null Rupture.
A dense, invisible beam of pure spatial void energy shot from his knuckles, passing straight through the gathering sphere of frost in the serpent’s maw and penetrating deep into its chest core.
The fifty-foot serpent froze mid-breath.
For two seconds, nothing happened. Then, a faint, dark violet line appeared down the center of its massive, glacial body.
SHHHH-POP.
The second Dread-Worm split cleanly down the middle, its frozen frame collapsing into two neat halves that hit the silver floor with a heavy, echoing thud, dissolving into harmless pale dust.
Silence returned to the third plateau.
At the far end of the frozen expanse, the black obsidian monolith shed its thick crust of blue ice. The silver runes carved into its dark surface flared with a bright, welcoming light, sending a deep resonance across the void. High above, the second gargantuan spatial chain attached to the distant inverted pyramid shattered into fine golden embers, dissolving into the indigo twilight.
From the base of the newly activated monolith, a third ley-line bridge extended out over the void, glowing with a stable, pale-blue light that led toward the fourth anchor node.
Yua landed lightly on her feet, letting out a long breath that formed a white cloud in the cold air. She flexed her hands, shaking off the residual frost. "Two down. Five left. That was almost too easy."
"Don’t get used to it," Falcon said, walking up beside her as her green fire faded back into her tails. Her ears twitched as she looked across the void toward the fourth island, which was covered in dense, churning storm clouds. "The pressure on the remaining chains is going to spike now that two are broken."
Seraphina lowered her trident, her blue eyes reflecting the steady light of the new ley-line bridge. "Kyle’s right. The core matrix of the inverted pyramid is reacting to the anchor losses. The environment on the next plateaus will get progressively more aggressive."
Kyle stood near the edge of the plateau, looking out over the void. His dark coat hung still against his calves, his gauntlet resting calmly at his side. He could feel the steady pulse of his Demon Knight core humming in rhythm with the broken chains, growing slightly stronger with every node they cleared.
"We don’t slow down," Kyle said flatly, turning his slitted dark eyes toward the third ley-line bridge. "We keep moving before the central core can reframe its defenses."
Without another word, Kyle stepped onto the glowing blue path, leading Seraphina, Falcon, and Yua forward into the next trial of Tier Four.
