Chapter 495: Crossing Over
The path connecting the celestial granite platform to the next floating landmass was not composed of physical stone.
It was a river of condensed, pale-blue spatial mana—a glowing ley-line bridge three yards wide that hummed softly as it hovered over the bottomless indigo void. The surface of the bridge looked like liquid sapphire, rippling under the biting wind, yet when Kyle set his heavy boot down, the line held with the rigid, unyielding firmness of solid steel.
Behind him, Seraphina, Falcon, and Yua stepped onto the glowing thread in tight formation.
"Watch your weight distribution," Seraphina advised softly, keeping her ocean trident held at the ready. A thin, cool mist hovered around her ankles, stabilizing her footing on the slick, condensed mana. "The ley-line is stable, but the surrounding gravity drops off sharply at the edges. One bad step and you’ll slip into the gravimetric slipstream."
"I’ve got four tails for balance, fish-girl," Falcon replied with a faint smirk, though her golden eyes remained locked on the dark void beneath them. Her dark brown tails swished in a rhythmic counter-cadence, the endothermic green poison-lightning crackling softly along their fur to ward off the high-altitude freeze. "Keep your eyes on the island ahead. The air feels heavy over there."
Two hundred yards across the glowing blue bridge, the next landmass hovered quietly in the indigo twilight. It was a massive, shattered plateau of dark volcanic basalt, spanning nearly a mile across. Unlike the platform they had just left, this island was littered with the ancient, petrified remains of gargantuan creatures—skulls the size of houses, ribbed torsos carved like ruined archways, and skeletal wings half-buried under drifts of pale-blue crystal dust.
In the center of the plateau stood a towering monolith carved from black obsidian, inlaid with glowing silver runes that pulsed in sync with the four spatial chains anchored to the distant, inverted pyramid.
"That’s a regional anchor," Kyle said, his voice flat and grounded as his dark coat swept behind his calves. "The inverted pyramid isn’t floating freely—it’s tethered to seven plateaus across this tier. To collapse the spatial barrier guarding the pyramid’s core, we have to clear each anchor node."
"Seven anchors?" Yua asked, her pale hands flexed at her sides, her claws extending slightly as dark purple ribbons of blood-electricity danced between her knuckles. "So we get to smash seven of these rocks before reaching the big pyramid?"
"If the local guardians let us," Kyle replied.
He stepped off the glowing ley-line bridge, his boots coming down onto the dark, ash-dusted basalt of the second plateau.
The moment all four of them set foot on the island, the glowing blue bridge behind them flickered violently, its liquid mana dissolving back into the void with a soft, echoing POP.
"A lock-in barrier," Falcon noted, her ears twitching as she spun around to watch their retreat path vanish. "Once you step on the plateau, the ley-line closes until the node is cleared."
"Standard trial architecture," Seraphina said calmly. She planted the butt of her trident onto the basalt floor, expanding her sea-storm domain into a low, three-yard sphere of swirling liquid around their feet. "It prevents ascending parties from retreating when the regional guardian manifests."
"Then let it manifest," Kyle commanded flatly.
He didn’t draw his dark shadow blade yet. He stood in the center of the basalt field, his pitch-black demon gauntlet resting at his side, his slitted dark eyes fixed on the black obsidian monolith three hundred yards ahead.
RUMBLE-THUD.
The petrified skeletal remains littered across the plateau began to shake.
From the dark crannies beneath the ancient bones, thick clouds of black, volcanic ash began to spew outward, swirling into three massive, fifty-foot whirlwinds in the center of the basalt field. The ambient gravity on the island spiked violently, jumping from normal atmospheric weight to nearly three times its baseline in a fraction of a second.
"Whoa!" Yua grunted, her knees bending slightly under the sudden, crushing weight. Her dark red blood-mana erupted around her body to reinforce her bone structure, her white fangs bared in a fierce grin. "There’s that gravity shift!"
"Hold your stances!" Seraphina called out, her blue hair whipping in the sudden gale as her water domain flared, absorbing the sudden gravimetric pressure and redistributing it across the liquid veil.
The three black whirlwinds condensed, their ash-laden currents solidifying into three gargantuan, centipede-like constructs forged from dark volcanic slate and petrified bone. Each beast was sixty feet long, with dozens of razor-sharp, scythe-like legs that tore deep grooves into the basalt floor, and a broad, horned face made of cracked black iron. Where their eyes should have been, two hollow sockets burned with intense, pale-violet void fire.
SCREEEEEECH!
The three bone-slate centipedes let out a synchronized, metallic screech that rattled the teeth in their jaws, their long bodies coiling around the petrified ribs scattered across the field.
"Ash-Bone Crawlers," Snow’s melodic voice echoed inside Kyle’s mind space, laying out a bright red structural diagram across his sight. "Constructs forged from the calcified remains of ancient divine beasts, animated by the tier’s gravimetric decay. Primary weapon: Gravimetric crushing force and pressurized void-ash breath."
"They don’t have soft flesh, boss," Falcon said, her four dark brown tails flaring with brilliant green-and-purple lightning as she took a wide, low combat stance. "Their outer slate plates are reinforced by the island’s high-density gravity."
"Then we break the gravity first," Kyle said flatly.
He took a single step forward, ignoring the three-fold gravity pressing down on the island. His Demon Knight core hummed with a quiet, absolute density that rendered the environmental weight completely meaningless to his frame.
Kyle raised his right gauntlet, opening his iron palm toward the sky above the three centipedes.
HUMMMMMMMMM...
The Spire Key: Core Access Matrix inside his chest resonated with the Lightning-Core Spatial Ring on his index finger. A brilliant, fifty-foot circle of pale-blue spatial runes erupted in the sky above the plateau, counter-rotating against the island’s local gravitational pull.
"Gravimetric Override," Kyle whispered coldly.
SHHH-THUMP!
The three-fold gravity crushing the island was instantly inverted within a hundred-yard radius around the three centipedes. The sixty-foot beasts, which had been anchoring their heavy slate bodies to the basalt floor, suddenly lost all traction as their bodies floated upward into the air, their dozens of scythe-like legs clawing helplessly at the empty atmosphere!
"Now!" Kyle commanded cleanly.
"On it!" Falcon roared.
She launched herself off the ground, using the inverted gravity to leap fifty feet into the air above the floating beasts. All four of her dark brown tails expanded into a massive, fan-like arc, engulfed in roaring endothermic green fire and crackling purple lightning.
"Poison-Thunder Art: Glacial Avalanche!" Falcon shouted.
She swept her tails downward in a crushing, triple-wave arc. A torrent of super-cooled green frost and high-frequency thunder slammed directly into the underbellies of the two outer centipedes.
CRACK-CRACK-CRACK-CLACK!
The extreme thermal shock hit the hot slate plates instantly. The volcanic stone, which relied on internal heat to maintain its structural integrity, contracted so fast under Falcon’s frost that thousands of spiderweb fractures snapped across their sixty-foot bodies with deafening, metallic reports!
"Yua, take the left! Seraphina, take the right!" Falcon barked as she hovered in the zero-gravity zone.
"DON’T HAVE TO TELL ME TWICE!" Yua screamed with manic delight.
She blurred through the air, executing a zero-gravity spatial leap that brought her straight onto the back of the left, frosted centipede. She drove her pale claws deep into the cracked slate armor, her hands exploding with dark purple blood-electricity.
"Blood-Burst: Core Rupture!" Yua roared, driving her right fist straight into the beast’s spinal plate.
KA-BOOOOOOM!
The kinetic detonation, combined with her purple blood-lightning, traveled straight down the centipede’s sixty-foot body. The frosted slate armor exploded outward in a massive shower of black gravel and bone dust, severing the animated core in a single, brutal strike. The sixty-foot construct collapsed into useless powder, dissolving into the void air.
On the right flank, Seraphina moved with regal, flawless precision.
She glided across the zero-gravity zone like an ocean spirit, her trident held horizontally. She didn’t strike the second centipede with raw physical force; instead, she flicked her wrist, sending three liquid ribbons of high-pressure sea-water shooting out from her domain to wrap tightly around the beast’s horned iron head.
"Sea-Storm Domain: Pressure Crush!" Seraphina declared softly.
She twisted her trident ninety degrees. The liquid ribbons around the beast’s head instantly compressed, exerting thousands of pounds of hydraulic pressure per square inch.
CRUNCH!
The horned iron head of the second centipede imploded inward, its pale-violet void eyes winking out as the internal mana matrix shattered under the hydraulic force. The sixty-foot body went limp, tumbling out of the air to smash onto the basalt floor below as harmless rubble.
In less than twenty seconds, two of the three gargantuan regional guardians had been wiped out.
The third, central centipede—the largest of the trio, spanning nearly eighty feet in length—realized its position was hopeless. It thrashed its massive tail, trying to use the spatial air currents to dive toward Kyle, its broad iron jaw opening wide to spit a concentrated beam of black void-ash directly at his head!
Kyle didn’t draw his shadow blade. He didn’t even shift his footing on the basalt floor.
As the eighty-foot beast plunged toward him, Kyle raised his left gauntlet, closing his iron fingers into a tight, dense fist. The Lightning-Core Spatial Ring on his index finger flared with a deep, midnight-black light, pulling the stored atmospheric thunder from his secondary battery and coating his gauntlet in a thick layer of anti-elemental void energy.
"You’re in my way," Kyle said flatly.
He drove his gauntleted left fist straight up into the center of the descending centipede’s iron jaw.
Void-Thunder Style: Second Form—Earth Breaker.
KA-THUUUUUUM!
The collision shattered the air across the entire plateau. A wave of pitch-black void lightning erupted from Kyle’s fist, traveling up the entire eighty-foot length of the centipede in a fraction of a second.
The beast didn’t break into pieces; the void energy dissolved its internal structure instantly, turning the gargantuan slate-and-bone construct into a massive cloud of fine, dark purple dust that blew away in the mountain gale.
Kyle slowly lowered his left arm, his gauntlet returning to his side as the inverted gravity field dissolved, restoring normal weight to the plateau.
Silence returned to the second island.
At the far end of the basalt field, the black obsidian monolith began to glow with a brilliant, pale-blue light. The silver runes carved into its surface resonated with a deep, musical chime, and one of the four gargantuan spatial chains tethered to the distant, inverted pyramid shattered into fine golden dust, signaling that the first anchor node had been officially cleared.
From the base of the activated monolith, a new, wider river of liquid blue mana shot out over the void, forming a stable ley-line bridge leading straight toward the third floating plateau.
Falcon landed lightly beside Kyle, her four dark brown tails giving a relaxed, energetic swish as her green poison-fire faded. She looked down at her gauntlets, a satisfied smirk touching her lips. "One anchor down, six to go."
Yua walked over, dusting off her trousers with a cocky grin. "If the rest of the seven anchors are this weak, we’ll be inside that inverted pyramid by dinner."
"Don’t get careless, Yua," Seraphina advised, her trident glowing softly as she stepped up to Kyle’s right flank. "Each anchor node we clear weakens the spatial barrier around the pyramid, but it also alerts the central core guardian. The next plateaus will adapt to our elements."
Kyle turned his slitted dark eyes toward the next floating island in the distance—a landmass shrouded in thick, swirling sheets of silver ice and biting frost.
"Let them adapt," Kyle said, his voice flat, grounded, and absolute as his dark coat swept around his calves. "We move."
With their cores steady, their domains harmonized, and the first anchor shattered, Kyle Conner led his party onto the next ley-line bridge, continuing their relentless climb across the Sky-Falling Plateau.
