Turns Out I'm the Real Monster?!
Chapter 129 - 96: Zombie King
Chapter 129: Chapter 96: Zombie King
"Ugh..."
Lan Rou’er grunted and groggily opened her eyes, still in a daze. "Lingzhu... What’s wrong?"
"Let’s go!"
Without another word, Chu Lingzhu yanked her to her feet.
’No matter what’s happening, it’s always right to get away from trouble first,’ she thought. ’That way we won’t be a burden to the Boss.’
Seeing her strange reaction, Han Yushu asked in confusion, "Miss Chu, what are you...?"
Chu Lingzhu couldn’t be bothered to explain, simply pulling the dazed Lan Rou’er and striding quickly out of the room.
She was about to head for the front gate when she suddenly remembered they were in a side courtyard, still some distance away. The young woman’s lovely eyes scanned the area and spotted a ladder propped up in a corner. She quickly pulled Lan Rou’er over to it.
"Quick! Climb the ladder!"
Although Lan Rou’er wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, her saving grace was her obedience. Seeing the anxious look on her best friend’s face, she didn’t dare ask any questions and clambered up the ladder with a THUMP, THUMP, THUMP.
Chu Lingzhu followed right behind her.
When she looked back and saw Han Yushu about to follow, her pretty face turned cold, and she snapped sharply,
"Don’t you come over here! Stay back!"
’A man standing at the bottom of a ladder looking up while a girl is climbing? How improper is that?’
’Of course, if it were the Boss, that would be a different story.’
Startled by her shout, Han Yushu stopped in his tracks, looking sheepish.
Once she was on top of the wall, Chu Lingzhu looked down and shouted to Han Yushu, "There might be danger in your house! It’s up to you whether you climb or not. I don’t know what’s happening, so don’t bother asking me."
Han Yushu opened his mouth, but in the end, he couldn’t hold back. "What on earth is going on?"
Chu Lingzhu rolled her eyes, not wanting to waste her breath on this idiot. Seeing Lan Rou’er crouching on the wall, trembling, she urged, "Hurry up and jump! Are you squatting there to lay an egg?"
"I... I’m scared..."
Lan Rou’er looked down from the two-meter-high wall, her face a mask of misery. She had a bit of a fear of heights.
"Get down!"
Without a second thought, Chu Lingzhu gave her a shove.
Then she leaped down herself, pulled up the completely disoriented Lan Rou’er, and sprinted for the mouth of the alley.
She didn’t stop until they had run all the way out of the alley and onto the main street. Only then did Chu Lingzhu pause to catch her breath, her face flushed.
Lan Rou’er rubbed her bruised knee, tears streaming down her face. "Lingzhu, what in the world is going on?"
Only then did Chu Lingzhu briefly explain what had happened.
Lan Rou’er was dumbfounded, her mouth hanging slightly open.
"Y-you’re saying... my uncle is already dead? And my aunt killed him?"
"I don’t know. That was the Boss’s guess."
Chu Lingzhu glanced toward the Han Mansion in the distance. "That huge commotion just now... The Boss must have found something incredible and run into big trouble."
"Then... then..."
Lan Rou’er’s eyes filled with worry. "Will Lord Jiang be in danger?"
"Who knows."
"Should we go back and check?" Lan Rou’er suggested. She still had a very favorable impression of the Lord Jiang who had saved her.
"What!?"
Chu Lingzhu’s beautiful eyes went wide. She was so angry that she reached out, pinched Lan Rou’er’s cheek, and gave it a hard tug.
"I swear, I am never saving you again, you foolish girl! Go back and check? Do you think you’re a Demon Slayer Envoy?
What could you possibly do there? Serve yourself up as a snack for some Demon Fiend?
If the Boss doesn’t save you, you’ll die, and with your last breath, you’ll probably blame him for being heartless. If he does save you, you’ll just be a burden and get him killed!"
"You’re right."
Lan Rou’er cradled her reddened cheek, her eyes welling with tears. Still, she had to admit her friend made a lot of sense. "So, what do we do now?"
"You, go report this to the Demon-slaying Bureau! Tell them Lord Jiang sent you and that they need to send some powerful experts over right away!" Chu Lingzhu said, her words coming in a rush.
"What about you?"
"I’ll wait here for the Boss."
"Oh, okay. Be careful, Lingzhu." Not daring to delay, Lan Rou’er gathered her skirts and ran off in the direction of the Demon-slaying Bureau.
Chu Lingzhu watched her go, muttering under her breath, "How can that girl be so dense?"
She craned her neck to look toward the Han Mansion in the distance and saw thick black smoke billowing up from above the courtyard, only to dissipate just as quickly.
The young woman’s delicate brows furrowed.
’The Boss still hasn’t come out. Looks like this is serious trouble. Could there really be a Demon Fiend?’
Watching the strange wisps of black smoke, Chu Lingzhu felt more and more certain that the situation was grave.
Seeing pedestrians on the street occasionally approaching the alley, she hesitated for a moment before pulling a small black vial from her robes and unscrewing the stopper.
Then, with her hands behind her back, she pretended to take a stroll, secretly scattering a powder in that area as she walked.
After she was done, she casually returned to her original spot, took out two cotton balls soaked in a medicinal liquid, and stuffed them into her nostrils.
A moment later.
An extremely pungent, foul stench began to spread from the mouth of the alley.
"What’s that smell? It stinks!"
"Did someone take a crap here? How shameless! BLECH—"
"I can’t take it, I’m going to puke..."
The passing pedestrians all pinched their noses and steered clear of the alley.
’I don’t know if this was necessary, but at least I helped a little,’ the young woman thought, clapping her hands together softly.
...
Back in the courtyard, Han Yushu stood alone by the ladder, still hesitating.
He couldn’t understand why Chu Lingzhu had run off so inexplicably.
’Just because of that noise?’ he wondered. ’Maybe it was just something heavy falling. Was it really necessary to make such a big deal out of it?’
In the end, his curiosity won out.
’Let me go see what’s really going on.’
He had only taken a few steps when he saw a familiar maid walking toward him.
"Xiaohong? Where are my parents? What was that noise just now?" Han Yushu called out.
But the maid acted as if she hadn’t heard him, her steps never faltering.
Han Yushu was puzzled. Just as he was about to step forward and ask again, he suddenly saw billows of black mist churning behind the maid.
He froze, his mouth just beginning to open.
The maid abruptly snapped her head up and lunged at him!
Only then did Han Yushu realize with horror that her eyes were glowing with a sinister, scarlet light. Black energy swirled around her body, and her face was covered in hideous, worm-like black veins.
