Vampire Progenitor System
Chapter 385 Damaris Stands
The debate about whether to fortify or push was not finished within the strategy hall
it simply ended when the lattice screamed
Lucian’s emergency channel opened over the palace before dawn, sharp enough to pierce all private doors and recovery wards. Mobile node detected. Information: not a supply relay, not a hunter cell. Something larger than either tore a path near the spirit border and locked onto two new progenitor signatures. Those signatures belonged to Temmy and one unsettled candidate from the outer courts. Should the node complete the pass, both would be lost.
Lucifer was already en route when Damaris found him in the corridor outside the recovery halls. His father’s body should have been failing by all known measures of medical viability, but the gold in his authority had taken root and was no longer left to linger behind sealed doors.
"You are not cleared," Lucifer intoned.
Damaris’s mouth curved into an expression that was nothing like a smile. "Neither are half the people you continue to send into folded space. Lilith returned to the field already. I will not sit this out while a harvest node searches through children who inherited our seats. I am coming."
Lilith arrived from the opposite hall with Nyx at her side, both already bearing weapons in the manner of those who did not intend further argument. "Let him stand," Lilith said, "if the node is mobile, we require every pattern reader who still has blood in the fight. He knows how they turn."
Lucifer studied his father for a long moment, then inclined his head. "You remain within the formation. If your output falters, you will extract on command."
"I heard you," Damaris said. "Now move."
They found the node hovering over a broken span of the border sky, where the spirit routes had thinned to open dark.
It did not resemble anything so simple as a relay. The construct was a moving cage of pale architecture and turning script, vast enough to swallow a patrol, with capture arms of law extending from the undercarriage. Two smaller signatures flared within the lower field, those of Temmy and a younger candidate already ensnared within a collapsing field of golden lines.
"It has them," Nyx said, "but if those arms finish closing, recall may yet be possible."
"Then we do not let them finish closing," Lucifer replied.
The attack came at three points, turning in upon the node from high, low, and winged assault
Rhazor and Heron came with fire and spear from the upper span, striking the outer plates with enough force to throw the turn off balance. Zane and Anita severed the lower portion of the field with blood and shadow, script peeling away from the turning bands as the pair moved in. Lucifer, Lilith, Damaris, and Nyx met the capture field head-on.
The node was not prepared for true opposition. Defensive spines of white law shot outward, one nearly taking Anita with it before Zane pulled her free. Another fastened onto Rhazor’s wing, setting a deep line of fire through scale before he tore free with a scream and met the node in kind.
Damaris moved slower than he had in years, but the precision did not leave with the speed. Gold authority flared around his hands as he caught one of the capture arms partway through an extension and forced it open by sheer weight of structural rejection. "These joints still take pressure from progenitor pattern," he called out, voice straining. "Strike where the script overlaps the field. Not the smooth face."
Lilith took him up on the offer at once, her dark power threading between the stress points until she had the weakened joint apart from within. The nearest arm to Temmy failed with the sound of breaking cable.
Temmy was free in a flare of spirit light, coughing heavily, her wide eyes still full of the echo of pursuit. Nyx caught her by the throat in a veil of darkness and flung her free of the kill zone toward the extraction line.
The second candidate was not so fortunate. The remaining arms drew tighter, the lines of gold sinking deeper into the young progenitor’s signature. The node prepared to fold local space inward, to begin a recall process at a short span.
"No," Lucifer said, and moved through the center of the field
True Divine pressure struck the undercarriage of the node with enough force to split two of the turning bands. The capture field wavered, and for one brief moment the young candidate was caught in open space, half-freed and half-taken. A final arm of law thrust through to finish the binding, but Damaris was there first.
He took the limb across his chest and pinned it with both hands, gold light screaming up his arms as the structure tried to override his presence. "Take the child!"
Lucifer wrenched the remaining lines of binding free and drew the young progenitor away as Lilith and Nyx covered the extraction with a double slice of dark force. Heron and Rhazor held the upper weapons at bay while Zane and Anita cut the lane wide enough for both captured signatures to clear the field.
The node, deprived of its holds, attempted to fold back upon itself.
Lucifer denied it the retreat. He drove a final layered strike into the weakened undercarriage and tore the core joint free. The mobile structure convulsed, spilled broken law and pale fire across the span of border sky, and died in pieces.
Silence rolled outward in uneven waves. Temmy lived, shaken but whole, as did the second candidate, if the burn lines in their authority were any indication. Damaris knelt once the last plate had fallen, breathing hard, the gold light in his skin sputtering unsteady. Lilith was at his side before anyone else could move, a hand braced against his shoulder.
"You were told to extract if your output failed," she said.
Damaris exhaled slowly. "It failed after the work was done. That is still a condition met."
Lucifer stood over the wreckage of the node, the two rescued progenitors at his back and the strained lines of his father’s face at his front. The mobile hunt was ended. One life fully saved, and one nearly lost and brought back only because Damaris had forced his incomplete recovery into the path of the capture arm. Nyx turned from the wreckage to take in the distant dark where the enclave still waited beyond reach. "They are no longer merely feeding the orb. They are actively harvesting the replacements in the field. That shifts the clock once more."
Aeloria’s voice rang through the channel from the palace lattice, taut with confirmation. "You are correct. The being has ceased treating the new seats as distant secondary channels. They are now open targets."
Lucifer pulled Damaris to his feet. His father was heavier than he should have been, drained in a way no brief respite could mend, but his eyes were clear.
"You stood," Lucifer said.
Damaris met his gaze. "And you will need me to stand again before this is done. The nodes will multiply if the relays continue to feed the core. Next time, we cut faster."
The border sky still smoldered with the weight of broken law. The team had taken the field and won it, but they also knew the harvest had been waiting for them to come to the next battlefield.
