Vampire Progenitor System

Chapter 386 Threshold Answer

They didn’t have a full day when the mobile node stopped functioning.

The border sky’s trailing wreckage had not yet cleared in its drifting pattern when the atmospheric pressure shifted; there was nothing of the quality of another hunter cell arriving, nothing of the supply vein offering itself anew. Air grew substantially denser, as though a distant hand had gripped the local current of pursuit roads and determined the board to be cumbersome.

Aeloria felt it through the lattice link first. "Something is entering projection. Not complete descent. Limited body. High density."

Nyx’s shadow stretched across the broken field extensively, "The being."

Lucifer turned toward the thickening patch in the shadows precisely as the new projection reached completion.

It did not come heralded. One moment the space was vacant. The next, the towering shape of combined white and pale gold loomed over the wreckage of the abandoned node and its features, caught between angular construction and shifting human impression, was visibly in transition.

The same intelligence that had declared through the enclave wall and the prior statement now stood within the ruined field in a diminished but otherwise complete physical manifestation.

Damaris, slung against Lilith’s shoulder in the aftermath of the previous encounter, went rigid. "That is not a messenger."

"Correct," said Lilith. "That is a decision."

The entity passed a long gaze over the broken node and its salvaged signatures as they drew back toward safer lines of approach, as well as Lucifer himself. When it spoke, its tone was the same balanced instrument as any other, only somewhat closer.

"You have become costly," it intoned. "Relays expended. Hunters lost. Mobile collector eliminated. Two recovered progenitors still present. The schedule tolerates loss. It does not tolerate endless interference from an approaching conclusion that refuses its appointed seed position."

Lucifer drove forward until he stood at a head of his line. "Then cease planting roles for me and address the matter on display directly."

It tilted its head back by an imperceptible amount. "This is not an exchange of position. This is an adjustment."

The kill statement did not come without further notice.

The projection surged across to meet them faster than any of the prior guardians, and much harder than the street hunter opposition. Lucifer met its charge directly with all of the True Divine investment at his disposal. The collision tore a secondary crater in the field from the prior wreckage and sent reverberations outward as a whole new set of shockwaves across the border sky. Nyx and Lilith closed from either side at an absolute closing speed. Damaris forced what he still possessed of the recovered gold signatures into a supportive hold that held its shape, keeping the entity from immediately channeling the field away through a kill pocket.

Limited as it was, this opponent exceeded any combat offering since the enclave wall opening.

Its law-blade cut through the blood constructs as if they were paper. An aftercurrent script nearly severed Nyx’s left arm entirely in its rising impulse before she could unravel its form mid-air. Lilith scored a heavy and thorough dark cut behind its thigh and observed the wound knitting up at nearly the same rate. Rhazor and Heron’s joint attack from above only purchased a handful of extra moments. Zane and Anita’s assault on its base of support knocked them both back with enough force for either of them to crack stone.

"It is not a complete signature," Aeloria’s voice came through the lattice-link from the rear connection sharply. "If it was, you would already be dead. That does not preclude the order being complete."

Lucifer ceased his trading of measured strikes and drives.

He focused in on all that the foundation jump and prolonged war had granted him, layering additional density of blood, shadow, and sheer physical mass until the air surrounding the enemy started breaking away. The entity countered with a condensed burst of white law directly aimed at Lucifer’s center. Damaris deflected a portion of it with a desperate gold shield, breaking in the process but siphoning enough power to ensure it at least lived long enough for Lucifer to survive as the remainder of the attack carved a thick new slash across the hunter’s lower ribs. That was enough to make him cough blood.

Lilith screamed outright in impatience before her next effort at the entity even engaged its body. The darkness in her grasp was an immediate extension of her will, hammering and tearing at the edges of the being’s transitional material. Nyx followed up that strike instinctively, living shadows drilling into whatever weakness her ally had just created.

The projection reeled.

For the first time in its existence, its composed mask wavered into something approximating focus.

"Enough," it stated.

The reduced form sent the field back a step upon a wave of outgoing energy. When the glow cleared, the projection itself was vanishing, not at the loss of its own life-force, but in the careful way of reaching the end of its calculation.

"You survive the adjustment," the entity observed, addressing only Lucifer. "That is noted. The remaining window of the orbit narrows in turn. Not more in gradual increase. Termination will be achieved on a compressed pace whether the external sources remain functional or not. You have imposed yourself as the foremost impediment, and therefore as the foremost option if capture ever becomes a condition of possibility."

The entity’s reduced signature dissipated into pale ash and empty pressure within the field.

The border sky around them was silent except for the occasional puff of breath and the smoldering embers from the wreckage.

Lucifer alone stayed upright by sheer impossibility of his own will. Blood ran openly from his body, a second wound added to the first. Damaris was half-collapsed once again, the gold force within him guttering and failing. Lilith remained on her feet between the two men, dark energy still raised, as though the entity might reconsider its position and return. Nyx’s field of influence was already fraying itself at the edges from overuse, and the rest of the lines presented a wounded and silent state.

Aeloria’s voice filtered through finally, not a word less harsh than it had begun. "The lattice statement is complete. The orb’s pattern just altered. Its rise is now a shorter climb than anticipated. The being is done regarding this as a controlled harvest with acceptable margins of time."

Zane wiped at his mouth and stared into the space the projection had so recently occupied. "So we hurt the schedule, and the answer was to set everything on fire."

"Correct," said Lilith. "This is what a threshold force will do to a garden when it stops presenting as convenient."

Lucifer regarded the damaged team at his back and the wide-reaching dark beyond the enclave still feeding off of every viable chain and uninterrupted vein. The partial victory the arc represented lay behind him in unbroken sequence, parents liberated, relays severed, hunters broken, a mobile node reduced to rubble. None of that had ended the gathering of the harvest. This entity had only decided that its expenses needed to be reconsidered.

"Then the next arc does not turn the corners," said Lucifer. His voice was rough, and his words left no space for argument. "We end the harvest or it ends this universe on a forced timetable. There can be no further half-measures."

Damaris somehow managed to raise his head enough to state, "That can be expected to require more than we are prepared to carry."Then we find more," Lucifer commented. "Or we make it. But we cannot stand to wait while the orb completes its cycle."

And around them, the border sky continued to hold what remains of the projection’s visit.

The counter hunt had grown to become a direct answer.

The threshold window had altered.

And, finally, the war to end the harvest had lost every form of future variation.
