Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 102 Gate Town
Team Arden attacked the second bell through four separate decisions rather than one formation copied from a handbook.
Lucas held Damien near center while his shield specialist broke toward Mina, leaving two fast fighters to pressure Isolde and Vivienne from opposite sides.
'He stopped trusting the expected counter before we used the new form once, damn, the golden boy learns faster when fate quits handing him answers.'
Mina placed no fixed barrier against the shield charge, letting her opponent cross three empty score marks before copper plates rose behind both feet.
"Your armor expects resistance from the front, so turning around will become today's difficult engineering problem," she said, folding the plates into a narrow cage.
The specialist drove forward anyway and found every sensor advantage gone, since Mina had removed her maker circuit from tournament wiring before the match.
Isolde met her attacker through clear vapor instead of venom, coating the floor with a compound that revealed weight without harming skin.
"Your next step belongs six inches left of where your hips claim, which makes speed less impressive than balance," she said, touching one heel through her scabbard.
The fighter slipped into his own committed cut, losing a scoring tag without receiving any wound beyond pride and one bruised elbow.
'Mina trapped the tank through geometry, Isolde poisoned footwork without poison, and neither needs me wandering over to improve the scene.'
Vivienne accepted both blades from the second fast fighter, carrying pressure toward the boundary while her new Level 620 output forced him to retreat after every contact.
The public board struggled to reconcile yesterday's registered 412 with the strength bending score glass around her lane.
"Your file says four hundred twelve, though that pressure belongs above six hundred," her opponent said, catching one crossing strike through both guards.
"My file belonged to a ceiling that no longer exists, so defend the woman standing here instead," she replied, cutting his shoulder tag free.
Damien fought Lucas without Mirrored Rain, using Gutter rhythm to learn what the new strategy expected before revealing the form's actual angles.
Lucas gave ground whenever Verdict's rain-lines shifted, refusing every bait designed for traditional Arden counters while keeping his eyes on Damien's hips.
"You built this from my recordings rather than family instruction, which makes somebody's tutors feel underappreciated," Damien said, turning a thrust into an elbow check.
"They taught me to recognize preparation, while you taught the country that inherited answers become liabilities," Lucas replied, catching the elbow through one forearm.
'That almost sounded like respect until he used it to kick my knee, which improves the delivery considerably.'
Their blades met above the center mark, neither earning a tag while the other three lanes changed the formation score around them.
Mina's captured specialist triggered an emergency strength release and tore one copper plate free, sending the cage toward Isolde's back.
Damien saw the movement across the claimant relay but gave no command, since Mina had already turned inside her own maker field.
She split the falling plate into two smaller barriers, protecting Isolde while leaving the specialist exposed toward the alchemy lane.
"I returned your equipment through a safer delivery angle, which means Isolde may invoice the handling," Mina said, locking both fragments near the floor.
"I accept payment through surrendered tags or public embarrassment, and your colleague appears rich in both," Isolde replied, touching the specialist's chest marker.
[Arden formation member eliminated]
'Two women just negotiated a knockout across separate lanes, while the committee still calls them support roles when filling forms.'
Lucas changed pressure immediately, releasing Damien to reinforce his remaining fighters rather than treating the captain duel as personal.
Damien followed for two steps, then stopped when Vivienne's relay pulse marked a deliberate opening instead of requesting help.
She drew both opponents into one line and declared a shallow Stay interval through the paired boon.
"Two seconds, left shoulder, then I take the response before either blade reaches Mina," Vivienne said, feeling the timer without receiving his wound.
Damien opened Stay against Lucas's redirected cut, delaying sixty percent while his feet carried the attack toward her pressure corridor.
[Stay interval: two seconds]
[Deferred damage: 540]
Reciprocal Interval reached Vivienne as timing alone, allowing Mirror-Edge to land during the final half second and remove both enemy weapon tags.
[Arden formation members eliminated]
The deferred cut arrived across Damien's shoulder after her response, hurting him alone and leaving her body untouched.
"The transfer remained zero, timing stayed clean, and your shoulder needs medical attention after the phase," Mina said, checking both relay readings.
"Please celebrate our first successful romantic injury protocol with less enthusiasm," Damien replied, keeping Verdict between Lucas and the remaining objective.
'The boon worked before national cameras, yet nobody carried my damage or obeyed a system command, which means the terms survived combat.'
Lucas stood with one remaining teammate against all four Sterlings, then used the central objective rather than attempting a dramatic rescue of losing lanes.
His last artificer deployed three white sensors that predicted raw movement through visual capture, requiring no corrupted tournament link.
"We cannot match their completed formation, so we take the objective before phase time closes," Lucas said, turning every remaining resource toward the center.
"That is the first sensible desperate plan anybody has offered today, so naturally I intend to ruin it," Damien replied, opening Mirrored Rain.
Three overlapping thrust paths struck the objective housing from different angles, forcing Lucas to defend one while Mina redirected the second through copper glass.
Isolde blocked the artificer's sensor vision through harmless white smoke, while Vivienne held the only clean route toward the objective.
The phase clock ended with Team Sterling controlling all four formation points and the central housing still intact.
The judges reviewed every elimination through independent crystal before confirming the result, while the damaged arena clock continued blinking a false seven seconds behind them.
Mina knelt beside her broken copper plate and marked the fracture with a grease pencil, caring more about the failed hinge than forty thousand people chanting Sterling.
"The cage released two degrees early under emergency force, so nobody calls that design finished until the replacement survives twice this pressure," she said, passing the fragment to her assistant drone.
Isolde offered the eliminated specialist a neutralizing wipe even though her compound carried no toxin, then recorded his boot pattern for the workshop archive.
"Your balance correction became predictable after the third turn, though the first two nearly caught me, which deserves an honest note," she said.
The specialist accepted the wipe and note with a stiff bow, deprived of the humiliation expected from losing to someone his academy file still categorized as auxiliary staff.
'They are collecting flaws from a victory instead of admiring it, which may explain why the damn team keeps becoming harder to kill.'
[Formation phase won: Team Sterling]
[System experience awarded: none]
[Student competition does not qualify for kill rewards]
'No EXP, no refund, just four people winning the phase they chose to own, which feels better than a panel trying to buy the meaning.'
Vivienne met Damien at the boundary to inspect the delayed cut without touching it, preserving the distinction between freely offered concern and mechanically assigned pain.
"Your shoulder remains functional, but another Stay at that depth risks opening the puncture from the first bell," she said, leaving the final decision visibly his.
"Then I will use the form correctly and disappoint everyone hoping for a tragic lesson about restraint," Damien replied, rolling the joint once.
The arena walls rose before the second phase could begin, dividing both teams until only Damien and Lucas remained inside the central ring.
Above them, Fate's Favorite burned one protected spike and turned every loose fragment toward the white side of the floor.
