Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 103 The Poisoned Exam
The Academy entrance exam began beneath closed gates, blue banners, and a senior assessor wearing the wrong seal as a badge.
Damien stood at the registration line with five girls beside him, while Aurelia carried her separate imperial papers.
The assessor's name was Veyr, a senior official with clean robes, empty fate residue, and a smile trained for denials.
He examined Damien's writ, then looked toward the five girls and Aurelia.
"The practical exam admits candidates individually," Veyr said, touching the black seal at his throat, "companions wait outside."
"They are enrolled candidates," Damien replied, looking at the sealed hall, "your forms list all six."
Veyr's smile held while his assistant checked the roster twice.
The roster named Vivienne, Yuki, Seraphina, Raven, Shizuka, and Aurelia beneath Damien's registration line.
"The final chamber determines grouping," Veyr said, returning the papers, "the Academy reserves judgment."
"The Academy has reserved a suspicious amount of ink," Damien answered, watching the wrong badge, "I hope the exam is less creative."
Raven leaned toward Veyr, smiling at the combat gate behind him.
"If the exam separates me from Damien," she said, gripping one dagger, "I will cut the examination."
Veyr marked her name with a red quill, then ordered the first stage opened.
The entrance hall revealed three practical gates, each carrying a different hazard.
The first gate held a bridge over dark water, the second held a shifting ward maze, and the third held a combat field.
None of the dangers looked ceremonial, which made the exam more honest than Damien expected.
[Academy Entrance Exam: active]
[Registered candidates: Damien Sterling, five converged companions, Aurelia Vale]
[Practical stages: three]
[Assessor: Veyr, senior, wrong seal visible]
[Aurelia Vale: potential thread, no redirect]
The bridge stage began with collapsing planks, hidden hooks, and a current that pulled toward a stone grinder.
Damien crossed first, using Warden's Authority to read the old support marks beneath the wet wood.
Vivienne followed with three chipped blades, cutting hooks before they reached her boots.
Yuki froze the current in a narrow lane, keeping the damaged field inside the bridge's safe stones.
Seraphina reclaimed a ward blessing from the bridge rail, while her burned glove smoked beneath the effort.
Raven jumped across missing planks, then complained that the bridge lacked an opponent.
Shizuka crossed through the shadows beneath the supports, returning with two severed hooks and one examiner's key.
Aurelia used her imperial seal to open a side brace, then looked toward Damien without joining his formation.
The bridge collapsed after the last candidate reached stone, sending the unused planks into the black current.
Veyr watched the wreckage, then marked the stage complete without comment.
The ward maze followed, placing each candidate inside a separate corridor of mirrored crystal.
Damien recognized the first three turns from an Academy chapter he had read before the novel vanished from public memory.
The fourth turn did not exist in any published version, carrying the wrong seal beneath its floor.
He touched the wall, feeling a revision line move behind the crystal.
'I know this exam, but the Story has added a room the readers never received.'
Vivienne's voice reached him through the relay stones, clipped and certain.
"Your corridor is changing," she said, striking something beyond the wall, "the Academy is cheating."
"The Academy is assessing creativity," Damien answered, following the cold line, "it has poor manners."
Yuki's frost marked a stable route through the maze, while Seraphina's gold fixed one mirror in place.
Raven broke through her corridor by attacking the wall, then shouted that the stage had finally improved.
Shizuka emerged from a shadow behind Damien, carrying the examiner's key beneath one black note.
Aurelia appeared at the opposite turn, her separate line crossing the maze without touching Damien's household braid.
"The wager counts this as shared ground," she said, holding the key's reflection, "do not claim the maze alone."
"I claim the bad architecture," Damien replied, touching the wall beside her, "you can keep the royal paperwork."
The second stage opened into the combat field before their argument could become a formal contest.
Veyr raised the stage seal, then released twelve practice constructs carrying academy blades.
Raven completed the combat stage in ninety seconds, though the stage had been designed for an hour.
She struck the first construct through its shield, used the second as a step, and disarmed the remaining ten in one red blur.
The final construct fell before its activation bell finished ringing.
Raven returned to the starting line, both daggers clean, her cracked horn glowing late.
"Combat complete," she announced, looking toward the proctors, "the stage may continue if it wants attention."
The proctors checked their crystals, their scoring slates, and Raven's uninjured boots.
"You skipped the combat stage," one proctor accused, pointing at the empty field, "the record shows no proper sequence."
Raven's smile became delighted, while Damien felt the exam's comedy lane open beneath the danger.
"I completed it too efficiently," she said, placing one hand on Damien's shoulder, "that is their weakness."
"The stage did not skip itself," Veyr replied, touching the wrong seal, "the candidate's time is invalid."
Damien stepped toward the assessor, while three chipped blades formed beside his coat.
"Read the marks," he said, pointing at the field, "every construct carries her strike."
Yuki's frost lens revealed twelve white impact lines, one across every construct's binding seal.
Seraphina reclaimed the stage's scoring blessing, exposing Raven's completed time beneath the red quill marks.
Shizuka returned the missing activation bell from Veyr's pocket, then placed it on the proctor's table.
Vivienne's silver blades cut the false failure stamp in half without touching the paper.
Raven leaned closer to Veyr, her cracked horn inches from his wrong badge.
"Write the time correctly," she said, "or I will complete the stage again on your desk."
The proctors recorded ninety seconds, while Veyr's smile finally lost its training.
Veyr touched the wrong seal at his throat, then changed the final stage's entry mark beneath the proctor table.
The alteration looked small, yet Damien felt the final chamber's pressure rise through the Academy floor.
"The final stage was listed as a group trial," Veyr said, keeping his eyes on Damien, "the hazard remains educational."
"Educational hazards usually disclose their fatal parts," Damien replied, watching the black mark spread, "your syllabus is hiding."
One proctor approached Veyr with a warning slate, then stopped when the assessor's badge turned the slate blank.
The erased report fell beneath the table, leaving the proctor unable to remember which danger he had named.
Damien recognized the method from the Redactor's work, though Veyr's seal lacked the editor's reach.
It did not rewrite the whole exam, it only converted a safety ward into a closing blade.
Vivienne's three damaged blades formed beside Damien, while Yuki froze the floor beneath the altered mark.
"The pressure is moving downward," Yuki said, touching the frost line, "the final room is being armed."
Seraphina placed her burned glove over the ward, refusing to reclaim its gold before she understood the blessing.
Raven grinned at the sealed steps, while Shizuka's shadow reached beneath the proctor table.
Shizuka returned with the discarded warning slate, its blank surface carrying one remaining black corner.
The corner showed six thresholds, one red floor mark, and a fatality value scratched beneath the exam seal.
Damien had seen the same chamber behind Cael's replacement record, though that glimpse had ended before the stairs.
The unpublished chapter had not shown an exam, it had shown a vacancy being prepared.
He looked toward Aurelia, whose separate gold line remained bright beside the five braided threads.
"The final room groups everyone," Damien said, keeping his hand near the imperial seal, "stay within sight."
Aurelia lifted her royal papers, then stepped toward the black stair without joining the household braid.
"I can see you clearly," she replied, touching the Half-Eye Token, "the room may regret that."
The combat stage paid a legitimate pass, yet the final door opened before the proctors could announce it.
The doorway revealed black stone steps descending beneath the Academy hall.
Damien recognized the chamber from the blank alignment beneath Cael's replacement record.
Six sealed thresholds surrounded the lower floor, each marked by a different fate line.
The chamber had never appeared in the published novel, though the unfinished Academy page had shown its red floor mark.
Veyr stood above the stairs, touching the wrong seal at his throat.
"The final stage groups all registered candidates," he said, looking at Damien, "the Academy reserves judgment."
The six girls entered first, Vivienne, Yuki, Seraphina, Raven, Shizuka, and Aurelia crossing the threshold together.
Damien followed, carrying the damaged skills, the route fragment, and the knowledge of an unpublished death.
The black door sealed behind them before Veyr's assistants could enter.
The final chamber held all six girls with Damien, while the wrong seal burned above the only stair.
The system panel opened in red, filling the chamber with a warning that did not name the way out.
