Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 112 The Fourth Day
The fourth day arrived on schedule, which was more than the vault it advertised could claim. Damien spent its morning losing to Raven on purpose, since her calendar now governed sunrise like a tax.
"Match three of seventeen," she announced, circling him, "your footwork improved, your acting did not."
"I am conserving villainy," Damien replied, parrying twice, "the market is flooded."
The household spent lunch looking bored in public, because three listeners paid attention to nothing else.
The vigil counted the household's yawns, which Shizuka performed in shifts for the audience.
Iven served soup with his usual ceremony, which was none, and seasoned the pot without measuring twice.
By dusk, the eastern wall's listening space had carried the bait to its final customer. Somewhere below the dormitories, Brother Corvo wrote a requisition for the maintenance grate, gate nine.
Gate nine's lock had been oiled that morning, since fictional corridors still maintain standards.
Petra Lorne heard the doors close from her post, felt her hand find its seal, felt the seal stay cold.
She had guarded gates for eleven years, and no gate had ever closed that politely. "Doors," she told the empty yard, "good doors."
Damien read the request through Shizuka's wall cavity like a man reading a bedtime story.
'Everything proceeds. The Vigil trusts paperwork, and tonight the paperwork betrays them.'
The maintenance corridor sat beneath the eastern wing, gate nine, unlit, and entirely fictional until that week. Shizuka had built it from a storage tunnel, two borrowed doors, and one very convincing grate.
Vivienne checked the approach at midnight, then took her position beside the false gate with three blades. Yuki mapped the acoustics, so every footstep in the tunnel would arrive at their table one second early.
Seraphina blessed the corridor's darkness, which made it the politest trap on campus. Aurelia watched from the royal stair, wager slate in hand, refusing to call this household business.
At the second bell, Osric Vane tested the grate with a pry bar, and the grate surrendered on cue. He slipped inside, Gil Marrow followed, and Petra kept the gate as trained.
The tunnel doors closed behind them with the soft click of a budget being spent well. Corvo reached the delivery alcove and found a package wrapped in requisition paper, tied with audit cord.
The label read {Vault key, one, pending inspection} in handwriting identical to the purchasing office's own.
He opened it and found a second label, which read {Evidence, one, pending tribunal}.
Shizuka stepped out of the alcove's shadow, turned on the lamp, and gestured at the chairs. "Sit," said a note on the table, because the household had voted against wasting her voice on amateurs.
Corvo reached for a blade that was already gone, and Gil's stylus came apart in his pocket. Vivienne walked in from the dark end, swords sheathed, disappointment visible even at that distance.
"The grate was decorative," she said, "the invitation was not, please review your choices." Seraphina followed with a tea tray, since the vigil had been working all night and looked underfed.
Oren Vale arrived last, escorted by the registrar, carrying the conduct book like a shield. "I was told this was a study group," the lecturer said, looking at the chairs, "this is entrapment with catering."
"It is a club activity," Damien said, entering behind him, "the Honest Rivalry Club's first field exercise." The paperwork held up, because the council had stamped the club charter without reading its purpose.
Petra stood at the gate the whole time, hand on her seal, and never once came inside.
Corvo answered no questions, so Shizuka answered them for him using his own report drafts.
The drafts named the reopened purchasing office, a dead drop in the chapelyard, and a salary paid in pardons. "That office dissolved after the tribunal," Oren said, reading the draft, "someone is paying Vigil debts to resurrect it."
"The office likes paperwork," Damien replied, "I simply filed a correction." He handed Corvo a fresh report, written in the Vigil's own format, describing an empty vault and a wasted week.
The report also carried one of Shizuka's tracers in the wax, thinner than a hair and twice as loyal. "You will deliver this," Damien said, "or the tribunal receives the original, your masters may pick their poison."
Gil asked what would happen if they refused, and Raven smiled at him with professional warmth. "Then the club schedules its second activity," she said, cracking her knuckles, "attendance is mandatory."
Oren stayed for the tea, since witnessing entrapment had earned him at least a cup. "Your club captured three soldiers," he said over the rim, "my syllabus covered littering."
"The syllabus is expanding," Damien replied, "the club merely assists." Corvo drank nothing, while Gil took sugar, which the tribunal would later file under cooperation.
The report Damien had written for them described an empty vault, a wasted week, a refund denied. It was the finest fiction the vigil's office had received in a decade, and it was notarized.
Corvo took the report, weighed his orders against his pension, and led his brothers back into the dark.
Petra lingered at the gate, looked at the soup thermos Seraphina had pressed into her hands, and left without a word.
The system panel opened over the abandoned tea tray, settling accounts like a contented clerk.
[Disinformation event: resolved]
[Vigil infiltration: repelled, zero casualties]
[Counter-report deployed: tracer active]
[Evidence secured: purchasing office resurrection, dead drop location]
[EXP +120,000]
[LUK +1: The grate performed beyond its price range]
[System note: You turned a fake vault into a real arrest warrant. The accountants are applauding quietly.]
Vivienne walked the perimeter twice before bed, because habits guarded better than locks. "The grate needs replacing," she reported at the stairs, "it surrendered with genuine enthusiasm."
Shizuka requisitioned two more doors from the maintenance budget, filed the request under philosophy.
The wall cavity delivered Corvo's footsteps home at the fourth bell, uneven, tired, traceable.
Raven declared the exercise a victory, demanded it be scored, the household ledger gained a page. "Nine out of ten," she ruled, "the trap lacked a fight, the tea carried it."
Seraphina washed the cups herself, hummed over the basin, called the whole evening a service.
Damien reviewed the vigil's drafts until the candle guttered, then filed them under debts, not threats.
A clerk who paid in pardons was not planning a war, he was assembling a purchase. "Whatever the office means to buy," he told the dark, "it shops after midnight, so we shop first."
Yuki folded the acoustic map and marked the chapelyard dead drop for Wednesday, since spies also keep office hours.
The morning's third rematch had ended in a draw, which the calendar recorded as a scandal.
"A draw," Raven said, offended by the entire word, "rematch four begins immediately." The fourth match ended properly at dawn, the scoreboard gaining its first honest entry of the week.
Aurelia descended from the stair and held out her slate, where the wager's newest line waited.
{Club activities count as shared ground, I am keeping score}
"Your ledger grows borders," Damien said, tapping the slate, "soon it will need a passport."
"The wager enjoys company," she replied, and the Half-Eye Token warmed between them like a signature.
Shizuka reappeared long enough to burn the vigil's originals, then left a note on his pillow.
{The woman at the gate held her seal and did not use it.}
Damien folded that note separately, because mercy inside an enemy was worth its own file.
