Dawn arrived carrying Raven, two wooden daggers, and the first red mark on her official rematch calendar.

Damien met her in the courtyard because the calendar was legally binding, and the combat dean had signed it with visible joy.

"Match one of seventeen," Raven announced, stretching against the fountain, "try to survive longer than the sunrise."

"I survived a scheduled ending," Damien replied, raising his practice sword, "the sunrise should worry about itself."

The bout lasted four minutes, ended with Raven pinned under his elbow, and was recorded by a note that slid from the drain.

{One, zero, household ledger.}

Breakfast reached the dormitory through approved channels, notes, and one suspiciously cooperative dumbwaiter.

Seraphina passed through the shared wall door carrying two plates, since the bonded security clause apparently covered catering.

"I blessed the toast," she said, setting his portion down, "the kitchen has stopped questioning my access."

"The kitchen has started a file," Damien answered, accepting the plate, "you two will meet eventually."

Yuki's warmth stone arrived through the ceiling on a string, accompanied by a temperature chart for his room.

He touched the stone once, wrote {still warm} on her chart, and sent it back up before the brazier cooled.

The chart marked his room's cold hours in blue, and the recommended cure in her handwriting.

The morning bell rang across the circular wing, and the integrated cohort moved toward the ethics hall with the whole Academy watching its borders.

Oren Vale took attendance beneath the repainted mural, reading each name without commenting on anybody's fate status.

Three names near the bottom of the roster did not answer on the first call, because they had been seated away from the windows.

"Osric Vane," the lecturer read, "Petra Lorne, Gil Marrow, the Academy welcomes transfer students who dislike responding."

The three transfers sat together in the eastern corner, wearing borrowed house crests and expressions carved from patience.

Their uniforms carried three different crests, none of which matched the enrollment fees those houses had actually paid.

Damien did not look at them for longer than any other student, because staring at prey teaches the prey to count.

Shizuka's file rested inside his coat, alphabetized by the names that actually belonged to the newcomers.

The first page named Brother Corvo of the Ashen Vigil, enrolled as Osric Vane.

The second named Brother Hult, enrolled as Gil Marrow, and the third named Sister Sarn as Petra Lorne.

The Ashen Vigil had led the old crusade's border purges, then dissolved on paper when the tribunal needed someone smaller to blame.

'Three veterans of a fake funeral, sitting in a first-year lecture, pretending to be bad at grammar.'

Oren wrote the day's question on the board, and the hall copied it down in competing handwritings.

{When is silence a lie?}

Petra Lorne answered first, offering a correct, careful definition that would have earned marks in any seminary.

Her voice carried the cadence of someone trained to speak in requisition offices, not student halls.

Iven Pell raised his hand midway through the answer, holding a wooden spoon like a formal pointer.

"Sometimes soup boils quietly," he said, "nobody checks it, and then it is late."

The hall wrote the spoon answer down beside the correct one.

Oren underlined the spoon version, which made the transfers copy it with visible pain.

At lunch, Petra Lorne carried her bowl to Iven's serving table and offered to help with the pot.

"I am learning humility through service," she said, reaching for the ladle, "the Vigil taught me kitchen work."

Iven looked at her hands, then at the pot, then shook his head once.

"You hold the ladle like a knife," he said, stirring, "knives make the soup nervous."

Petra's smile held, though her thumb had shifted into a guard position older than the Academy.

Yuki watched the exchange through her frost lens, then tilted the crystal toward Damien's bench.

The lens showed Petra's thread, sealed at the shoulder with a wax-colored knot of Church-issue luck.

[Fate scan: Petra Lorne]

[Thread: sealed, old crusade stock]

[Seal origin: decommissioned requisition office]

[System note: Someone reopened the armory receipts. Audit pending.]

Damien closed the panel without expression, then sent one note down the table to Vivienne.

{Three confirmed, seals active, they are not here for the syllabus.}

Vivienne read the note, burned it in the brazier, and replied by adjusting her blade's angle one degree east.

The afternoon seminar gave the transfers their first real move, and they spent it on something small.

Gil Marrow dropped a stylus near Damien's desk, then apologized while his fingers brushed the wood for wires.

Shizuka's shadow was already under the desk, so his fingers found nothing but honest pine and one black note.

{Nice stylus, poor reach.}

Gil returned to his seat with the stylus, the note folded inside his sleeve, and no report he could safely write.

He tested the note for poison anyway, because the Vigil trained for enemies with standards.

Damien spent the evening doing exactly what the household did before every trap, nothing worth reporting.

He attended Raven's second rematch, lost on purpose to study her new footwork, then won the rematch after it.

He ate Iven's soup, praised the pepper, and let the whole courtyard hear him schedule a third bowl.

He read the dormitory's housing notices, complained about heating costs, and went to bed at a boring hour.

Behind the eastern wall, Brother Corvo recorded all of it, and every line he wrote was uselessly true.

His report praised the villain's boring schedule, stable appetite, and suspiciously regular sleep, then requested clearer orders.

The household's real business moved through the wall cavities Shizuka had mapped on the first night.

Her first note proposed {Feed them the chapel schedule, let the Vigil watch an empty bell}.

Damien wrote back {Add the vault rumor, the Vigil respects receipts}.

By midnight, the eastern wall's listening space carried one carefully broken conversation about a vault key.

Damien's voice mentioned a maintenance corridor, a locked grate, and a delivery that would arrive on the fourth day.

None of it existed, and all of it was priced for three professionals with requisition training.

The corridor even had a gate number, a shift rotation, and a foreman borrowed from a dead bandit's ledger.

Damien had learned the trade from the novel's filler chapters, where every vault needed three paragraphs of procedure.

The system opened above his desk as the wall went quiet, tracking the bait like weather.

[Disinformation deployed: vault key, fourth day, maintenance corridor]

[Listeners confirmed: 3, recording]

[Trap status: armed, patient]

[Household exposure: zero]

[LUK +2: Honest soup is apparently a luck practice]

[System note: The Vigil will file excellent reports about a room that does not exist.]

Aurelia's separate escort passed his window at the third bell, on her own patrol of the royal stair.

She did not stop, though the Half-Eye Token's warmth crossed the glass like a signature.

'Keep your border, princess, the Vigil is already behind it.'

The transfers' answer arrived before dawn, carried by no courier any student saw.

A black wax pellet sat inside Gil Marrow's window box, sealed with a mark that had no registry.

Damien watched from the dark as Gil cracked it open, read the order, and went still in a way first-years never went.

The whisper of it crossed the wall cavity a breath later, one line, plain enough to hurt.

{Watch the unthreaded student, report what he seasons}

The Ashen Vigil had not come for the villain, the saintess, or the vault that did not exist.

The old crusade had sent three soldiers to spy on a boy whose only recorded talent was soup.

Damien set Iven's file beside the roster's blank fate line, and the two mysteries closed into one.

"Tomorrow," he told the shadow beneath his door, "the soup gets a guard."

Shizuka's fingers pressed his once from the dark, already writing the duty roster in her head.

The roster appeared beneath his pillow by the second bell, written in ink that vanished by daylight.

{Soup watch, six shifts, volunteers exceeded capacity.}

The household had turned a security crisis into a rotation with a waiting list, which said everything about Iven's pot.

[System note: Guard duty for soup. The Academy has reached peak employment.]

Morning would bring the fourth day countdown, the Vigil's first report, and a pot that needed guarding.
