Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 145 Lucas
Dawn came up gray over the camp, with Riven already running toward the rows of lanterns.
Ormond clutched a blanket to his chest, "Wilf and Nell are still in there, they ran the other way."
"Then I’ll fetch them," Riven said, shrugging off his coat, "everyone else stays behind Bram and the bucket."
"You are going alone," Mara said, her ears flat, "again."
"I’m not alone, I have an excellent plan and it involves soup."
Pruners prowled the edge of the camp where Class One’s wounded lay, shears opening and closing in patient unison. Riven slipped between them without raising Overdue, because intending any kind of fight was how the shears found you.
’Walk like furniture on an errand... no hurry, just a guy moving a chair.’
Behind the shield line Cassen gripped Giltknife with trembling knuckles, watching Riven walk into a vast field of lanterns. He wanted to follow, but a hero’s habit of charging in was exactly what the shears were waiting for.
"Come back with all your limbs," he muttered, "I need a rival I can beat."
On the rise above the rows, Routekeeper Ivo stood with his cuffs adjusted, a clipboard held to his chest. Number One waited beside him, brass token bright, his calm eyes fixed on the villain crossing the open field.
"Witness it," Ivo murmured, "the scene is set."
"I witness what I see," Number One said, his gaze never moving.
The brass token on his collar hummed faintly, a tuning fork waiting for someone to strike the note. Across the field Riven walked on, one small figure among a thousand lanterns glowing like a sleeping city.
’Don’t look at the shears, don’t want anything... think about soup, you idiot.’
Riven found the two cadets pinned beneath a fallen branch, shears clicking a few feet from their throats. He heaved the branch aside, the scar the Record gave him screaming, hauling Wilf clear by the collar.
"The shears are right there," Nell whispered, shaking, "they’re going to cut me."
"Not if you don’t intend anything," Riven grunted, hauling her upright, "just think about warm soup and walk."
"Actual soup, with a spoon?" Nell squeaked, clinging to his sleeve as the shears clicked closer.
"A big spoon, slowly, like you own the bowl."
The brass token chimed against Number One’s collar, the Record reading aloud in its flat voice.
"I witness: Riven, alive, carrying a Class One student."
"That is not the scene the King provided," Ivo said, tapping his clipboard.
"It is the scene I see."
At the word alive, the rib wound stopped aching, its edges knitting together beneath Riven’s soaked bandage at last. The Record no longer claimed the wound stayed open, the flesh simply obeying whatever sentence the page now held.
’He wrote me alive... and the wound believed him.’
Wilf coughed on the grass, "You came for us... we never liked you."
"That’s fine, I never liked you either," Riven said, "I just hate paperwork."
Riven hauled both cadets to the line of Zero shields, then turned to find Number One walking away. The boy crossed the grass in unhurried strides, drawn toward a pale lantern flickering low beside the path.
"Return to your position," Ivo called from the rise, "that lantern is irrelevant."
The lantern leaked a dead stranger’s last memory into the cold dawn air, soft as breath on glass. It showed a young explorer on a cliff, sketching a map of a sea he would never reach.
"Survey Company, Lucas Ferrow," Number One read from the brass tag, "died here wanting to see the sea."
"Do not touch that, it belongs to no list."
"The want remains and nobody carries it," Number One said, "I would like a name."
Ivo’s mouth tightened, "You have a name already, it is stamped on your token."
"A number is not a name, nobody is using that one."
He unhooked the tag from the lantern’s chain, turning it over in careful fingers until it caught the dawn. The brass token on his collar chimed again, softer, as though it no longer quite trusted its own number.
"Lucas," he said, "I will see it for him."

"Did the spare hero just pick his own name?" Sorrel breathed from the wounded line.
"Even odds he picks a surname next," Cael muttered, "I’m backing no."
"I shall file a report," Ivo said stiffly, "you may expect consequences."
Ivo’s clipboard sagged a full inch against his chest, the first crack in his mild civil service smile. He backed toward a door that opened in a tree trunk, adjusting both cuffs on the way out.
The door closed behind him with a polite click, leaving Class One’s wounded staring at a boy named Lucas.
---
Isolde knelt behind him in the lantern grove, drawing a pale thread through the skin of his back. Her needle worked along the old shear cuts without once hesitating, tightening every knot with a tiny snap.
"The rib has closed, I do not understand how," Isolde said, running a thumb along the scar.
Riven shrugged, "Someone wrote me alive, the wound took it personally."
"Then I withdraw several unkind opinions about that boy, I will tell him so."
Isolde snipped the last thread and rose, smoothing her robes twice with hands that were suddenly very formal. Her chin lifted a fraction, the way it did when she addressed a council or a hostile magistrate.
"May I have permission to kiss you?"
Riven laughed, a helpless crack of sound that escaped before he could stop it.
"Never mind," she said, scarlet to the ears, "I withdraw the motion."
She turned to leave with enormous dignity, made it three steps, then spun back as though pulled by a string. She seized his collar in both fists and kissed him hard, with all the fierce precision of a signed treaty.
Four seconds passed, three of which Riven spent forgetting how to breathe like a normal person.
"I withdrew the motion," Isolde said, breathless, "the motion proceeded without me."
"That’s the best parliamentary excuse I have ever heard from anybody in a robe."
’Four seconds... I’ve survived worse and enjoyed it a lot less.’
From the tree line Nix held up a slate marked with four tally strokes, wearing an expression of pure profit. Veska lowered her stopwatch and nodded once more, the Council’s quiet official witness to the longest four seconds ever recorded.
"Pay up, four seconds, the pool closed at three."
"The pool was never opened," Veska said gravely, "I checked the charter."
[ Joint Account offered: Isolde | Suture ]
[ Terms: what Overdue cuts, she may keep cut | Both parties must consent ]
Isolde read the panel once, then again, moving her lips as procedure required.
"I accept," she said, tucking a loose strand behind her ear, "the terms are sound."
"Accepted," Riven said, a little dizzy, "I’d sign anything you put in front of me."
Behind the nearest trunk a golden head appeared, politely studying the sky as though searching for rain clouds today. The brass token on his collar was already chiming, eager to record the most important moment of his life.
"I witness—" Lucas began, stepping out from behind the trunk.
"Don’t," they said together.
At the edge of camp the clicking of the shears died, one pair after another, across the whole Orchard. A boy with Riven’s face strolled into camp, a white wound in his chest, while every single Pruner bowed.
