Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine

Chapter 146 The Version Who Stayed Dead

The copy walked through the middle of camp at an easy pace, shears bowing aside to let him pass.

He wore Riven’s coat and jaw scar, carrying a sword whose spine cracked in the same exact place. A white wound ran through his chest from hip to collarbone, its edges clean as paper, never bleeding.

"Halt and identify yourself," Veska ordered, leveling her spear.

"I am the Chapter One he refused," the copy said, "I accepted the ending."

Zero formed a ragged line across the camp, Bram’s bucket raised, Veska’s spear crackling, Cassen’s blade trembling. Nobody in the line breathed, the copy’s stillness frightening them more than any clicking shear ever could.

Riven raised a hand toward the line, "Stay back, all of you, he’s me and I would cheat."

Riven stepped forward alone, Overdue held low, the healed rib silent beneath his coat for the whole morning. Across the grass his own face watched him come, patient as a mirror that never learned to blink.

He circled slowly, tilting his head at the chest wound, "You look terrible... the wound doesn’t suit you."

"It is the only part of me that finished," the copy answered, touching the edge of the wound.

"Does it hurt, or is it just decorative?" he asked, tapping his own chest.

"Nothing hurts, no wishes remain, it is very restful."

’Restful the way a funeral is restful... great pitch, would not sign.’

A Pruner lunged at the copy with its shears open, then froze, as though it found only a blank page. Nothing in him intended a single thing, leaving the shears no thread to cut and nowhere left to click tonight.

Cael cupped his hands to his mouth, "Everything on the dead one, I am losing on purpose."

Riven spent fifteen thousand on a Peek, the System unfolding its answer in thin lines across his vision. What it showed him made his stomach drop, which felt oddly worse than reading any warning at all.

"Wants nothing, fears nothing, owns no panel," he muttered, "he doesn’t even have a System."

"Then he needs none," Yukine said from the line, "the script is his System, it loves him."

They moved at the same instant, two identical Offbeat Steps sliding into the same gap between breaths. Overdue and its twin met edge to edge, ringing once, neither blade finding any skin to bite.

"You always slide left first," the copy said, "it is the one habit you never broke."

"Today I’m feeling right," he answered, sliding right and finding the copy already there.

Riven called down one of Veska’s stored strikes, lightning leaping from the clouds toward his sword on his own beat. The copy read the shoulder before the bolt arrived and slid aside, letting the thunder shatter a supply wagon instead.

"That was my strike," came an offended voice from the line, "he dodged my strike."

"He didn’t dodge your strike, he dodged me."

Cassen took one step into the field, Giltknife flaring, his jaw set the way it always was before a speech. The copy turned its head toward him, studied him for one second, then looked away as though he were scenery.

"You are not in this Chapter," the copy said.

"Back off, golden boy," Riven called, "this one only reads me."

Nix cut a door in the grass beneath the copy’s feet, a perfect trapdoor swinging wide for him. He stepped over it without looking down, the grass sealing behind him as though it never once existed.

"He walks over doors, nobody walks over my doors."

"He called me scenery," Cassen said, stunned, "nobody has ever called me scenery."

"Scenery is a promotion, last Chapter you were a hat stand."

Riven feinted high, rolled low, flung a handful of dust at the copy’s eyes, each trick arriving late. The copy never blinked, tilting its head a fraction as though it already knew the page by heart.

"Use us," Mara shouted from the line, "he cannot copy all of us."

"Not yet, he’s reading me... I need one clean look at how he reads."

Riven tried Counter-Time, letting the copy’s thrust ride into a rising cut that should have doubled it easily. The copy answered with the same skill on the same beat, both forces erasing each other into nothing.

’He knows every feint I own, because he is every feint I own.’

Riven reached for Rest, pulling the world toward a single held breath, a silence meant to stop the Correction. But the copy was already standing inside that silence, patient as a man waiting alone in an empty chapel.

"You reach for the silence," the copy said softly, "I live here."

White crawled up the copy’s blade like spilled milk running uphill, the same flare that ended Chapter One. The camp’s noise cut off all at once, as if somebody slammed a book shut on the world.

"Silence, white, bla—" he started, one half beat too slow to dodge it.

The blade opened him from hip to collarbone along the exact line Giltknife once drew before ten thousand strangers. This time nobody cheered, the only sound his own blood tapping softly against the churned dirt of the camp.

At the tree line Dorian lowered his notebook and smiled, a real smile, wide enough to show teeth.

’Dorian’s smiling... I hate that I’m too busy bleeding to hate it properly.’

"The book is correct," Dorian called across the camp, "do try to look surprised."

Dorian turned a page of his notebook with exquisite care, the fresh ink on it still glistening in gray light. Beside him the Class One survivors stared at the villain bleeding in the dirt, unsure whom they were hoping for.

"He doesn’t even bleed," Sorrel whispered, "how do you cut a man who doesn’t bleed?"

"He is going to die," Ormond whispered, gripping Sorrel’s arm.

"He cannot die yet," Pryce said hoarsely, "I have not commissioned the portrait."

Mara slammed into the gap between them, hauling Riven across her shoulders as the copy’s blade rose once more. Veska’s storm broke overhead in a sheet of blinding fire, hiding their retreat behind a roaring wall of rain.

"Don’t talk," she snarled, "you are leaking on me."

"Sorry... I’ll send... the bill," he managed, grinning through red teeth at the sky.

Isolde sprinted across the grass with her satchel flying, thread already glowing red between her fingers like a drawn bowstring. She ran beside Mara and Riven through the mud, pressing a wad of cloth to the wound as they fled.

"The cut is exactly where the first one landed," Isolde said, "it will not hold stitches."

"Do not speak, I am counting your breaths, you are overspending," Mara growled through the rain.

"I’m holding the rear," Bram rumbled, lifting the bucket over Isolde’s head like an umbrella.

"Even odds he survives, I am backing yes this time, as a treat."

"Retreat is authorized," Veska called over the thunder, "all of Zero, withdraw to the infirmary tents."

Through the rain Riven saw the copy walk back toward the heart-grove, unhurried, the whole Orchard bowing as he passed. At the trunk the King lowered a crown of grafted branches, settling it onto the copy’s head like a coronation.
