Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 87 Countermove
Vivienne told him the whole colonnade conversation in eleven minutes, sitting on a workshop stool with her cape over her knees and the rain drying out of her hair.
’She came straight here with it before the clip finished spreading, damn, and she is not asking me what she should have said.’
"He listed the bracket, the breach heart and the Marlowe clause, in that order, then mentioned eleven months of incidents in a private file," she said.
"Then he has done real work, since every one of those is public and none of them explain each other," Damien answered from the cot.
"He also asked whether I was safe, and he meant it, which is the part I want you to actually hear," Vivienne replied.
"I heard it, and pretending that question is unreasonable coming from him would be a lie," Damien said.
"Hmm, you have not once asked me what I actually told him out there," she said.
"You told me what you told him, at the start, in the first sentence, so there is nothing left for me to ask about," Damien answered.
’And if I ask her to keep refusing him, the refusal becomes mine instead of hers, yeah, do not touch this, it is already correct.’
They spent two hours separating what Lucas could actually know from what he could only guess, with Mina’s clipping wall spread across the bench between them.
The first stack was public record, enormous, and every item in it was true.
The bracket prediction sat filed and stamped, the breach route lived inside an inquiry finding, the clause challenge stood in his own hand across a Marlowe seizure record.
"Everything in this pile is checkable, so we never deny any of it," Damien said.
"So your plan is to confirm every last item on his list," Vivienne answered.
"I am going to confirm all of it and give it a boring explanation, since a boring true-sounding answer kills more curiosity than a denial ever has," Damien replied.
The second stack was inference, which was where Lucas actually lived, it was thinner than it should have been.
He had noticed the timing, the pattern of arriving early, the total absence of anybody ever catching him receive information.
He never once considered, judging by all of it, that such information might come from outside this world.
’Because that is not a thing a person in this world can think, yeah, and Isolde is the one who worries me, since she has stopped assuming her own century is the limit.’
The third stack was the dangerous pile, holding four items, every one of them touching somebody other than Damien.
Mina’s tempering access, Isolde’s survival routes, Vivienne’s synchronization with a skill nobody ever named to her, plus one small ink-black creature photographed twice.
"Hey, Blank is the only one of those four that a rich boy with private intelligence cannot possibly explain," Mina said.
"Then Blank stops appearing in daylight, which it will hate, and which it is going to do anyway," Damien answered.
’And it will sulk on my pillow for a week to make the point, damn, I have acquired a creature with a sense of grievance.’
They built the answer over the following hour, it was almost entirely true, which was what made it work.
House Sterling appraises, Damien had been appraisal-trained from childhood, and a second son can buy intelligence through channels nobody audits.
Every sentence of it could be checked, eleven of the twelve incidents fit inside, the twelfth was the breach heart.
"The breach heart is the one that does not fit any explanation involving books and money," Vivienne said.
"Then the breach heart gets no explanation at all, since a man who explains everything is a man with something to explain," Damien replied.
’One unanswered thing is a mystery, and eleven unanswered things is a system, damn, so leave exactly one.’
Then he did the thing that made Vivienne set her cup down and look at him properly.
"He comes back to you within four days, asks three questions, and asks them in this order," Damien said.
He wrote them on the back of Mina’s clipping list, folded it once, and handed it to Vivienne without letting anybody else see the paper.
First he would ask whether Damien knew about the shelf before departure, next who told her to trust him, last what actually happened at the gala.
"You are sitting there predicting a conversation between two living people," Vivienne said.
"I am predicting a man running out of luck who has started using his mind, since anyone in that position asks those three in that order," Damien answered.
’No page told me that one, since every page I own has gone rotten, yeah, this is just knowing the man.’
’Which is the first time all year that knowing somebody beat owning the Chapter about them, huh, it cost nothing.’
She put the folded paper into her coat without opening it in front of him, which he appreciated considerably more than he said out loud.
’She could have read it, tested it, argued about it, yeah, and instead she filed it, which is a whole different kind of trust.’
Lucas found her on the third day inside the sparring hall, cuff frayed worse, a bruise across his forearm from something ordinary.
He asked whether Damien had known about the shelf before the convoy left Averill.
He asked, when she declined that one, who told her to trust a man the whole academy called trash for two years.
he asked, from the door, one hand on the frame, what actually happened at the Foundation Gala.
Vivienne came back to the workshop that evening, took the folded paper out of her coat, and read it in front of all three of them without saying anything first.
Then she put it on the bench face up, Mina made a noise like a kettle, and Isolde started laughing from the doorway.
"All three, in that order, with the third one at the door," Vivienne said.
"He is predictable in the way careful people are predictable, which is not an insult," Damien answered.
"It is absolutely an insult, you should hear yourself say it out loud sometime," Isolde replied from the doorway.
The system posted while they were still arguing, the entry had nothing to do with Lucas.
[Death Flag: The Finale - Fatality 100%]
[Position: advanced]
[Convergence detected: Crown Trials venue]
[Correction density: rising]
’The Trials, shit, of course, a national broadcast, eleven hundred students, and every house in the country in one building.’
The Correction came for them at midnight, on the annex stair, while they were carrying three stacks of clippings back up to Mina’s workshop.
No beast came this time, nor any gray auditor, which was the detail Damien would think about for weeks afterward.
The stair’s fourth landing simply stopped being where it had always sat, dropping four hundred kilos of stonework into the space Vivienne’s head occupied.
Blank screamed a quarter second before it happened, out of Damien’s coat, that quarter second was the entire difference.
[Engineered coincidence detected]
[Correction class: structural]
[Divergence: 38% - response active]
’Not an attacker, a building, shit, it is going to keep dropping this academy on us one stone at a time.’
Vivienne came off the landing under his shoulder with her cape torn free at the clasp, the clippings went down four flights in a paper avalanche.
Damien did the only thing available, which was stand in the falling part of the stair with Iron Veil up and let the academy hit him.
[Debt: 0 → 214]
He held the barrier over both of them through eleven seconds of masonry, the ledger drinking falling stone exactly as it drinks blades.
Isolde arrived below and dosed the mortar line, which slowed the collapse enough to matter.
[Debt: 214 → 468]
Then, with the last stone down and nothing whatsoever touching him, the counter climbed anyway.
[Debt: 468 → 487]
[Blood Ledger: anomalous accrual]
[Held Debt increased without new damage]
’It is growing on its own, damn, that number went up while I was standing in a pile of somebody else’s building.’
He watched it climb twice more in the dust before it stopped, and nobody else in that stairwell could see the reason he had gone completely still.
[Evolution threshold detected]
[Warning: evolution requires a live hostile crucible.]
Vivienne got her cape off the broken clasp, looked at four flights of ruined stair, and said the only sensible thing available.
"The academy itself tried to kill us and there is nobody in the building to be angry at," she said.
"Then we stop being angry and start being early, since this happens again on a worse staircase," Damien answered.
