The Sterling vault’s lower training hall had been built for house champions, which meant stone walls four feet thick and a construct rack that answered to a family seal.

Damien booked eleven hours through a steward who assumed the second son wanted privacy for an embarrassment, then let the man keep assuming.

’Four feet of stone, no witnesses and a rack of things that hit back, yeah, and if this goes wrong the walls are the only reason anybody upstairs survives it.’

Mina came down with two cases of instruments, a conductance monitor she had built in nine days, and a written list of conditions.

"Right, so I refuse to be your assistant tonight, and I refuse to stand here while you privately decide how much of yourself to spend," she said.

"Then run it, and I mean actually run it, including the part where you end it," Damien answered.

He gave her the seal to the construct rack, handing over control of what came at him and how much, then she checked twice that he understood.

’Nobody has held a stop switch on me since the day I woke up in this body, huh, it turns out the feeling is mostly relief.’

"If I call stop, you release everything into the floor, we go upstairs, and no vote of yours applies," Mina said.

"Agreed, and here is the failure condition so you can recognize it before I can," Damien replied.

He said it plainly, without softening it, since a person given authority over a risk needs the actual numbers.

Held Debt above cap does not simply hurt, it stops being external at all, the ledger begins drawing from the holder rather than the debtor.

Above cap, the tally reads the wielder as the nearest available account.

"So the failure looks like the number rising while nothing is hitting you," Mina said, writing it down.

"It looks like that for about four seconds, and then it looks like a man bleeding from places nothing has touched," Damien answered.

The evolution price posted when he opened the skill panel, it was the largest single figure the shop had ever put in front of him.

[Blood Ledger: evolution available]

[Compounding Wrath]

[Cost: 39,000 System Points]

[Requirement: threshold accrual maintained through live hostile exchanges]

[Balance: 51,400 → 12,400]

’Thirty-nine thousand, damn, that is the arena, the bridge and eight days of Marlowe money in one line item.’

The Shop unlocked a new tier the moment the purchase cleared, which it had never done before, and Damien closed the panel after four seconds.

[Tier unlocked: Mythic protocols]

[Lowest listed item: 120,000 System Points]

’Close the panel before the number registers properly, yeah, that tier is a way to spend the next two years being poor.’

The test took eleven rounds against house constructs, starting at Level 400 and climbing, Mina calling the rack while her monitor ran hot from round three.

Compounding Wrath did what the entry said it would do, which was worse and better than the Blood Ledger in exactly the ways he had expected.

Debt still accrued per hit, at interest, doubled on branded targets.

then, after every valid hostile exchange, whether or not anything landed, the held balance grew by four percent of itself.

[Debt: 610]

[Compounding: +24]

[Debt: 634]

[Compounding: +25]

The number rose while he blocked, kept rising as he moved, and went up through eleven seconds of round six when nothing came near him.

’It is earning interest off itself, yeah, the ledger has stopped being a record of what they did to me and turned into something that grows.’

’It grows on its own now, shit, so the gamble is no longer how many hits I take, it is how long I stay in the room.’

The cap did not move, which was the cruelty of it, since a balance that grows by itself against a fixed ceiling turns every extra second into a decision.

Round nine put him at eleven hundred against a cap of fourteen sixty with two constructs still active, and Damien did the arithmetic while fighting.

Four percent per exchange, at that balance, meant forty-odd points a beat, leaving roughly eight exchanges before the ceiling.

’Eight before the ceiling, the eighth is where a man gets greedy, okay, take six and leave the last two on the table.’

He took six of them, released into the eleventh construct’s chest, and printed the largest training figure the vault had ever recorded.

[RECKONING - 1,402 Debt × 2.0 = 2,804]

[Verdict conductance +20% = 3,365]

Round eleven nearly finished the whole thing, ending as Mina insisted rather than the way Damien would have chosen.

He held past the release point deliberately, wanting the ceiling’s shape, until compounding put him at fourteen hundred thirty-one with two exchanges still queued.

The monitor screamed, Mina killed the rack from the wall, and every construct went inert mid-swing.

"Stop right now, put every point of it into the floor, and do not argue with me," she said.

He released into the flagstones, which cracked across three of them, the number went to zero while his hands kept shaking for a full minute.

"You were twenty-nine points away from the failure condition you described to me two hours ago," Mina said.

"Hah, twenty-nine points is an enormous margin by the standards of this year," Damien answered.

"Twenty-nine points is one exchange, you did that on purpose to see where the wall was," she replied.

’Yes, yeah, she knew it before I finished, which is exactly why she got the seal.’

"You were right to stop it, I am saying so out loud so the sentence exists somewhere," Damien said.

’Because if I never say it, she stops using the switch, yeah, the switch is the only reason this room is survivable.’

Mina wrote the whole thing up anyway, eleven rounds of it, with the compounding rate, the cap behavior and a column for the corrupted-timing risk from the annex corridor.

She pinned it above her bench beside the Stay table, and those two documents together were the only honest description of his kit anywhere in the world.

’A woman who never once saw a status screen just wrote better documentation than the system gives me, damn, built entirely out of spite and graph paper.’

[Skill evolved: Blood Ledger → Compounding Wrath]

[Compounding: 4% of held Debt per valid hostile exchange]

[Cap: unchanged, scales with Endurance and level]

[Training EXP gained: 18,137,000]

[Level: 828 → 850]

[Experience: 462,000 / 850,000]

[System Points: 12,400]

[Divergence: 38%]

[Ascension Board: 6]

They came up out of the vault at four in the morning to find Bram waiting above the stair, three phones in hand, wearing pure institutional panic.

"The semester Board posts in six hours and the Crown Trials format leaked forty minutes ago," he said.

"Then tell me the format before you tell me the standings, since the standings are already decided," Damien answered.

"It is a team event this year, four to a team, five days, national broadcast," Bram replied, "and the number one seed gets first pick of every unassigned student in the year."

’Lucas picks first, in public, on camera, damn, the first three names he calls are going to be mine.’
