Chapter 1437: Chapter 610: Battle of the Blood Pine Forest (Part 3)
However, none of them had any reason to stop.
After paying no small price in casualties, Odo’s army finally entered into close-quarters combat with Gailte’s army. Because the distance was now too close, the Musketeers had to cease fire, otherwise they would hit their own men. Under the roars of the Combat Priests, the soldiers of the Supreme Dean of Light endured the merciless, frenzied musket fire and at last became entangled with the enemy.
"Fei’s Sheltering Light!"
"Light of Conquest!"
Odo finally made his move. The Supreme Dean of the Bright Academy successively cast two full-range strengthening Light Magic, wrapping the vanguard of the Imperial Army within them, allowing them to be spared harm in close combat. Immediately afterward, the Hayhee Wind surged; the second Spell calmed the somewhat unsteady morale of his own troops. Glory’s power wrapped around them; the soldiers, their morale surging, plunged into the strongest formation of Long Halberdiers and Long Spear Soldiers arranged by Gailte, beating them back step by step.
"Shining Robes!" Gailte was not to be outdone. The Great Alchemist chanted a Spell, golden Hayhee Wind swirling about his body, the Golden Staff raised high in the sky. In an instant, the more than two thousand Long Halberdiers and Long Spear Soldiers at the very front of Gailte’s army all felt golden scales appear over their bodies. That vulgar, tawdry golden light protected those brave soldiers, keeping them from breaking even as they fell back; under dual protection, the Infantry of both sides slaughtered one another at close range.
The Metal Magic cast by Holy Sanctuary Tier Gailte was not something the Legendary Peak Odo could match. After securing a string of minor gains, Odo began to feel uneasy. He watched as his soldiers, slowly yet unmistakably, were driven out of their defensive line by Gailte’s troops. Gailte’s Spells had given his soldiers an almost unbreakable defense; ordinary weapons simply could not pierce those reinforced armors and skins.
Odo could only immediately order the Cavalry under his command to begin their charge. He quite naturally assumed that Gailte had hidden his Cavalry behind the formation because Gailte lacked sufficient numbers of Cavalry and did not dare to confront his Cavalry head-on. Thus, taking advantage of the fact that the Infantry had already engaged and pinned down Gailte’s Infantry phalanx, Odo’s Cavalry launched their charge as well.
By this time, the exhaustion of Gailte’s army after the long expedition had become all too obvious. The utterly spent Infantry soon collapsed under the fierce assault, and Odo gained precious time to reorganize his already shattered formation and wretched morale.
The scales of victory seemed once more to tilt toward the Supreme Dean of Light. Odo ordered his soldiers to advance, the Cavalry covering and supporting on both wings. At the same time, Odo raised his hand toward the depths of the Blood Pine Forest.
"Whizz!" A shining light orb rose from the tip of his Magic Staff into the sky and exploded high above!
Deep within the forest, a band of mercenaries appeared, intending to assault Gailte’s formation directly from the flank!
"As expected!" Gailte remained quite calm about this. The Great Alchemist had long since anticipated that Odo would surely have a contingency. In exactly the same manner, Gailte’s Golden Staff was likewise raised to the heavens, a still more dazzling golden light illuminating the sky.
"Alchemy of Lead!"
The thousands of Odo’s Infantry and Cavalry locked in close-quarters combat were horrified to discover that their weapons had all turned into heavy lumps of lead and clods of earth. Their arms had become burdens; the soldiers on the very front line collapsed almost instantly.
Immediately afterward, Gailte signaled the Artillery to fire red signal flares.
As the signal flares exploded above the firmament, on Odo’s rear-right side, an entirely new army appeared.
"By decree of Your Majesty!" The Holy Sanctuary Powerhouse, Griffin Duke Ivan Ferdinand, riding the Great Griffin Beast Calamity, led the Griffin Knight Order in a charge out of the Blood Pine Forest!
They tore along the forest paths like a storm. Four hundred Half-Griffin Knights formed the core, with several hundred Knights on the two wings; several, mounted on Griffins—the true Griffin Knights—formed the spearhead, surging out of the forest!
With a shout brimming with contempt, Ivan led his forces straight into the rear of Odo’s army, ripping Odo’s entire host to shreds!
"What?" Odo hauled on the reins; he could scarcely believe it.
When had Gailte gotten mixed up with Griffin Duke Ivan?
There was no time for him to think.
"Supreme Dean Odo of the Bright Academy, dismount and surrender at once!"
"Otherwise, you will be killed without mercy!"
