Chapter 291: Chapter 172: Scouring the Apartment Rooms! An Unexpected Surprise! Rapeseed and Brown Rice
The keys to the faculty apartments were easy to find. They were on the body of the parasitized security guard.
Although Chen Chong had killed the guard, the team members cleaning up the aftermath had collected the keys and handed them to him.
Gazing at the large key ring in his hand, which weighed several pounds, Chen Chong felt a strange sense of bemusement. ’I never thought I’d get to experience what it feels like to be a landlord.’
The faculty apartment building had seven floors in total.
The first through third floors were all studio apartments, with twenty units per floor.
The fourth through sixth floors had two-bedroom apartments; the number of units was smaller by roughly a third, with thirteen per floor.
As for the seventh floor, it was all three-bedroom apartments, with only ten units in total.
Adding up all the rooms from the seven floors, there were a grand total of one hundred and nine apartments!
More than half a month had passed since the school was transported here. Although many students had tried to redeem an apartment, very few had actually managed to move in.
Aside from Chen Chong, who had redeemed one for himself on the seventh floor, and Ning Yu’s group, who had redeemed two, no third party had moved into the three-bedroom apartments.
Not a single student had even moved into the three floors of two-bedroom apartments in the middle of the building; they were occupied almost exclusively by teachers and security guards.
The only exceptions were the studio apartments on the bottom three floors, where a dozen or so rooms had been sporadically redeemed. This also included the Chinese medicine room.
As for how Chen Chong knew all of this...
It was all because the security guards had recorded every transaction in detail in a logbook.
And that very logbook had been found in the dead guard’s room.
Since he planned to take over the entire faculty apartment building, he first needed to know which rooms had already been redeemed.
Chen Chong had no intention of repossessing the rooms that had already been "purchased."
After all, to acquire a room in the current food-scarce environment, whoever redeemed it must have paid a steep price and been mentally prepared for the cost.
Chen Chong wasn’t a tyrant. Since others had obtained these rooms through their own efforts, he had no reason to forcibly take them away.
Of course, the more important reason was that these few redeemed rooms didn’t affect his ownership of the building as a whole.
After all, only a handful of rooms were occupied, and they were all studios on the lowest floors. It was of no consequence to his control over the entire building.
But the perfectionist in Chen Chong still planned to contact these students to see if he could recruit them for his team.
’Otherwise, having a few students who aren’t part of my team living in my building would just feel... off...’
Chen Chong first went to the security guard’s room he had previously contacted. There, he found out the specific details about the redeemed apartments, along with which floors and rooms all the teachers and security guards were living in.
For Chen Chong, taking over the entire building wasn’t just about gaining ownership of the rooms. The supplies they had stored were also a crucial part of the prize.
It wasn’t that he was after the supplies they had received in exchange for the apartments.
Frankly, very few rooms had been redeemed. Add to that the consumption over the past half-month by the dozen or two teachers and guards, and there probably wasn’t much left from those trades anyway.
However, from what Chen Chong had gathered, these guards and teachers had rarely ventured out to find resources over the past half-month.
For one, they lacked the ability. For another, they had no intention of doing so.
To have the confidence to not go out scavenging meant they must have stockpiled a considerable amount of supplies from within the school beforehand. Otherwise, they would have exhausted their resources long ago.
This was evident from when he first redeemed his apartment, and the guard had offered to trade various daily necessities for some of his venison....
After getting the locations of all the teachers’ and guards’ rooms, Chen Chong led Xu Jun, Zhang Meng, and a few others to check them, one by one.
As they began opening the doors, it became clear that the stashes of supplies would not disappoint.
In the first room, they found three stacked cases of instant noodles and two boxes of assorted daily necessities.
These included laundry powder, liquid detergent, and body wash, as well as bowls, candles, flashlights, batteries, and various other miscellaneous items...
Clearly, they had looted all of this from the school store in the early days after the crossing.
Otherwise, even if they had moved in early, it would have been impossible for them to hoard so many daily necessities under normal circumstances.
The group exchanged smiles and, without a moment’s hesitation, cleared everything out. They didn’t even leave behind a single pot or pan.
They only moved on to the next apartment after they had looted the first one bare, leaving it almost exactly as it had been originally.
Although the school’s remaining teachers and guards had formed an alliance, they didn’t all live on the same floor. Instead, they were scattered randomly throughout the lower and middle three floors.
It was unclear whether they had chosen rooms based on personal preference or were simply living in the apartments assigned to them by the school before the crossing.
In any case, they had only occupied the studio and two-bedroom apartments; not a single one of them lived in a three-bedroom.
Perhaps they felt such a large space was a waste for a single person, or perhaps they were saving the three-bedroom apartments to redeem for more supplies.
As they opened one door after another, Chen Chong, Xu Jun, Zhang Meng, and the others found cache after cache of supplies.
Most of the hauls were similar to the first one: basic staples like instant noodles, bread, snacks, and drinks, along with various items like plastic tubs, toilet paper, and even glass cups...
Each room contained at least several boxes of supplies—enough to last for half a month, or even more than a month.
Evidently, they had divided everything up beforehand. Whether it was goods obtained from redeeming apartments or items looted from the school store and cafeteria, everything had been distributed evenly among them.
Although Chen Chong had already stockpiled many of these items in his cellar, as the old saying goes, you can never have too much of a good thing.
