Chapter 1476: Chapter 1476: Winning and Losing Doesn’t Matter
Scarlett Yates was stopping him from retracting his move, grumbling discontentedly, "No way, Grandpa, once it’s placed, it’s placed. Even if your hand shook, you can’t take it back. Know that there’s no regret in making a move. If you retract it, I won’t play with you anymore."
Her threat of "not playing with him anymore" seemed to work. Ian Douglas frowned and complained a few words, but slowly withdrew his hand.
Matthew Saxon noticed that the two were not just playing to pass the time; there was a wager involved.
In front of Scarlett lay a thick stack of money, indicating she was currently on a winning streak.
Matthew watched in disbelief.
Ian’s chess skills were renowned; whether it was Go, Chinese Chess, or regular Chess, his abilities were considered professional-level. Yet, here he was, losing at tic-tac-toe, a game even kids can play.
Matthew couldn’t believe Ian was this clumsy.
Even if it was his first time playing tic-tac-toe, he would lose maybe two or three times at most, but once familiar with the rules, he would soon turn the tide.
The fact he let Scarlett win that much was just him wanting her to win, probably because he found it amusing.
Anyway, his grandpa’s thinking was generally not like ordinary people, so he was used to it.
"Ahem." The completely ignored Matthew coughed twice, trying to make some noise to remind them of his presence.
"You’re awake?" Upon hearing his cough, Scarlett immediately stopped what she was doing and turned her head to look at him.
Finally, she noticed he was there.
Matthew smiled, walked over slowly, bent down to look at the thick pile of paper bills in front of her, and said with a smile, "I wake up and see you’ve made quite a haul, won quite a bit of money, huh."
Then he looked at Ian Douglas and shook his head with a sigh, "Grandpa, to think you’d lose at such a simple game. It seems as if aging really does cause mental decline; yours must have degenerated by at least fifty years."
Ian couldn’t be bothered with him, rolled his eyes, still playing with two glass marbles in his hand like toys, shrugged and said, "Only slightly better and you’re already provoking me. Playing a game is just about having fun, winning or losing doesn’t matter."
"Oh." Matthew nodded, smirked, and sat down next to Scarlett, taking two marbles from her hand, "Let me play the rest of this game with Grandpa."
--
They finished the game, and Matthew Saxon lost.
"Alas, I was fooled. Seeing Scarlett win so much money, I thought Grandpa’s money was easy to win. How come Grandpa is so gentle with Scarlett but so fierce with me, not even willing to take a step back? Am I still your biological grandson?"
When playing against Matthew, Ian Douglas fully unleashed his true skill without holding back.
His moves were quick and ruthless, not leaving any space.
Once they finished the game, Scarlett understood it clearly too.
It turned out she won so much before because Ian was letting her win.
She thought he really couldn’t play and had been smug about it for a while.
Matthew wagered an item from himself and, losing the game, he sighed and took off his watch, placing it in front of Ian Douglas.
Ian accepted it without hesitation, immediately wearing it on his hand, and admired himself for a while: "This watch definitely looks better on my hand."
