Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close

Chapter 546: Was Claire Sherwood the Little Girl Who Brought Him Food Back Then?

  • Next Chapter

Even after failing to see Quentin Blackwood this time, Claire Sherwood wasn’t ready to give up.

She hadn’t expected that seeing Quentin Blackwood would be even harder than she imagined.

She resorted to ambushing him at the entrance of his residential community. After seeing his license plate last time, she now recognized his car.

This time, when she saw Quentin Blackwood’s car drive out, Claire Sherwood stood directly in the middle of the road to block it.

The driver slammed on the brakes and looked at Quentin Blackwood. “President Blackwood, a woman just appeared out of nowhere.”

Quentin Blackwood’s eyes were cold. “Just get rid of her.”

The driver got out of the car and waved at the nearby security guards. Claire Sherwood hadn’t been inside the community just now, so the guards had no jurisdiction over her.

Now, seeing the wave, the guards walked over.

The driver had been with Quentin Blackwood for a long time and was a man of few, ruthless words.

“Her. Get rid of her.”

Claire Sherwood hadn’t expected Quentin Blackwood to be so cold. She struggled, crying out, “Quentin Blackwood, I’m Claire Sherwood, Ivy Sherwood’s sister! I have something I want to talk to you about. It will only take a few minutes of your time.”

Inside the car, Quentin Blackwood remained indifferent. Of course he knew this was Claire Sherwood.

But so what if it was Claire Sherwood? He didn’t want to see anyone from the Sherwood Family.

“Miss Sherwood, you should move on your own,” a guard said. “It wouldn’t look good for a group of grown men like us to use force on a young lady.” The guards recalled having thrown this very same girl out just yesterday or the day before.

“Get out of my way! I need to see Quentin Blackwood!”

“Quentin Blackwood, what did my mother do wrong? What gives you the right to treat her like this? She didn’t kill anyone!” Claire Sherwood intentionally wailed, pleading her mother’s case.

Besides, today was the day of Ruby Sterling’s court hearing. For Claire Sherwood, time was running out.

“Miss Sherwood, I think you should be at the courthouse right now, or finding your mother a better defense attorney,” the driver chimed in.

Claire Sherwood looked toward Quentin Blackwood in the car. “Quentin Blackwood, let me see Ivy Sherwood! She can’t be this heartless!”

“Miss Sherwood, please don’t make this difficult for us.” The security guards were really about to use force.

This was exactly what Claire Sherwood was waiting for—for them to make a move so she could struggle.

“Let me go! All of you, let me go!” As Claire Sherwood struggled, something suddenly fell.

She quickly picked it up and deliberately held it in her hand, pretending to check if it was broken.

Over by the car, Quentin Blackwood saw the object in Claire Sherwood’s hand, and his pupils constricted.

He shoved the car door open and strode toward Claire Sherwood.

Before Claire Sherwood had a chance to put the Jade Pendant away, Quentin Blackwood seized her by the wrist.

He stared at the object in Claire Sherwood’s hand, his voice tight. “Where did you get this?”

“Get what from where? You’re hurting me…” Claire Sherwood’s plan had succeeded. The corners of her mouth lifted in a small arc, but on the surface, she appeared utterly panicked.

“This Jade Pendant, where did you get it!” Quentin Blackwood’s eyes were tinged with red.

He snatched it from Claire Sherwood’s hand and stared at the Jade Pendant. This… this was the one he had given away as a child. He would never mistake it. It was a gift from his mother.

The quality of the jade wasn’t particularly fine; the wealthy might not even give it a second glance. But back then, it had been a very precious item to his mother.

There was also a small crack in the center, from when his mother had accidentally dropped it while handing it to him. At the time, Quentin Blackwood had blamed himself for a long while.

Later, he had given this Jade Pendant to the little girl who brought him food.

Claire Sherwood said, “What are you doing? Of course this is my Jade Pendant. I’ve had it with me since I was a child, for over a decade now.”

Quentin Blackwood stared at her in disbelief. Claire Sherwood said, “What? You don’t believe me?”

“This Jade Pendant has always been with me. If you don’t believe me, you can ask my old classmates from abroad. You don’t suspect I stole it, do you?” Claire Sherwood feigned surprise.

Quentin Blackwood’s expression was incredibly complex. He asked again, “Where did you get it?”

“Why should I tell you?”

“Tell me! Where did you get your Jade Pendant!” Quentin Blackwood was becoming agitated.

‘Did Claire Sherwood find it? Or maybe she stole it?’

“It’s mine. It’s just mine, so why should I tell you? Someone gave it to me when I was a child. I never saw the person, I only knew he was inside a walled compound. He seemed so pitiful, with nothing to eat. I went to bring him food every day. On the last day I went to bring him something to eat, he was gone, and this Jade Pendant was left in the lunchbox.” Claire Sherwood described the situation.

Although she wasn’t the one involved, she could easily guess what it must have been like.

Besides, she was the one who went on the last day. By that time, Quentin Blackwood had already been taken away by Silas Blackwood and the others. Ivy Sherwood had never even seen this Jade Pendant.

Quentin Blackwood froze. ‘She’s that little girl from all those years ago?’

‘She…’

“What’s wrong?” Claire Sherwood asked. “Is there something wrong with this Jade Pendant?”

Quentin Blackwood never would have imagined that Claire Sherwood was actually that girl—that it was Claire Sherwood who had brought him meals for a week, saving him from starving to death.

‘And this Jade Pendant… has Claire Sherwood really kept it with her all this time?’

‘Back then, was it really Claire Sherwood?’

An idea occurred to Quentin Blackwood: could the girl from back then have been Ivy Sherwood?

He didn’t trust anyone from the Sherwood Family. ‘What if Claire Sherwood bullied Ivy Sherwood and stole her things?’

He held the Jade Pendant, snapped a picture of it, and sent it to Ivy Sherwood. “Do you recognize this?”

Ivy Sherwood replied quickly. “It looks a little familiar. I feel like I’ve seen it before.”

Quentin Blackwood’s heart skipped a beat. ‘Could this actually belong to Ivy, and Claire just took it from her?’

‘Is it just that Ivy’s memory of it is faint, so she doesn’t remember?’

“Think carefully,” Quentin Blackwood replied.

Ivy Sherwood thought hard for a moment, then said, “It looks a bit like something of Claire Sherwood’s. I think I’ve seen her with it once or twice.”

When Ivy Sherwood was very young, she remembered seeing Claire Sherwood take it out, but whenever Claire saw her looking, she would quickly put it away, as if afraid Ivy would try to snatch it from her.

“It’s not yours? Did she take it from you?” Quentin Blackwood asked, still uneasy.

Ivy Sherwood shook her head. “No, I don’t have anything like that. What’s wrong? Did Claire Sherwood come looking for you?”

Ivy Sherwood was certain the item wasn’t hers. ‘But why is Quentin asking? Did something happen?’

‘So it really isn’t Ivy’s…’

For some reason, an uncomfortable feeling settled in Quentin Blackwood’s heart.

He had put the Jade Pendant in the lunchbox. If it had been Ivy Sherwood, she would have definitely gotten it, and she wouldn’t think the pendant belonged to Claire Sherwood.

‘Could it be that back then, it really wasn’t Ivy?’

‘Why wasn’t it Ivy?’

Quentin Blackwood had remembered that little girl for a long time, thinking that one day, when he was capable, he would definitely repay her kindness.

But Quentin Blackwood had never expected that person would turn out to be Claire Sherwood.

Claire Sherwood knew her plan had succeeded. In Quentin Blackwood’s eyes, she was now certainly the little girl who had brought him food back then.

‘This was a life-saving debt of gratitude. How could Quentin Blackwood possibly not repay it?’
