Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 585: What Exactly Did He and Winter Mercer Go Through?
Ovillette had no memories at all. He only knew that Winter Mercer—both the person and the name—felt incredibly familiar. Yet, he couldn’t recall a single thing about her, not even the faintest shadow of her face.
That was until a moment ago, when he heard the Princess’s own words.
He had once given up the throne for Winter. If that were true, she must have been boundlessly important to him. But now, he couldn’t even remember who she was. Ovillette hardly dared to believe that he had forgotten someone for so many years. No wonder it felt like memories were trying to burst out of his mind when he first saw Ivy Sherwood. It turned out there was a reason for it all.
Even now, after hearing everything the Princess and the others had said, Ovillette’s mind remained a blank slate. He still couldn’t recall anything.
What kind of person was Winter Mercer? What exactly had they been through together?
Just the mention of her name sent a dense, suffocating ache through his heart, making it hard to breathe. He had forgotten something so profoundly important. She might have been the love of his life!
If he hadn’t made this trip to Calypsos, would he have remained in the dark forever? And the Princess... she would have kept it a secret from him for the rest of his life. When the day came for him to die, how could he ever face Winter?
"I didn’t do anything! I really didn’t!" the Princess trembled. Right now, denial was her only option.
As long as she stubbornly claimed ignorance, Ovillette wouldn’t be able to do anything to her. As long as there was no hard evidence, nothing would happen. Besides, she was Ovillette’s wife, the Princess of Elandra. Their loving marriage was famous. Many of Ovillette’s international activities required her presence; he needed her by his side.
As the King of a nation, Ovillette could absolutely not afford a scandal. This was the Princess’s final lifeline.
At that moment, Zion Landon walked over, dragging another person along before tossing him into the room.
"Mr. Ovillette, why don’t you ask your personal doctor? How many years has he been by your side?"
The moment Ovillette saw Davi, everything clicked into place. So the people closest to him—even the woman sharing his bed—had been deceiving and scheming against him all along.
Davi knelt on the floor. "Your Majesty, I don’t know what these people are talking about. I’m just a doctor."
"A doctor? I’m afraid it’s not that simple. Don’t you also know hypnosis?" Zion crossed his arms, staring down at him.
The doctor was undeniably skilled. Whether it came to hypnosis or general medicine, if he had stayed on the straight and narrow in a hospital, he could have saved countless lives. It was a pity he had gone down the wrong path, using all his abilities for such nefarious purposes.
"What hypnosis? I don’t know how to do that at all. I’m just an ordinary doctor who takes care of the King’s daily health," Davi refused to admit it.
Furthermore, the Princess was glaring at him with a threatening expression. His family was still in her hands. He had spent years living in constant fear, doing her bidding just to keep his loved ones safe. Their lives were on the line. He didn’t dare disobey, and even now, he was too terrified to utter a single word of the truth.
The Princess had, of course, anticipated what might happen if she were ever exposed. She had warned Davi long ago that he wasn’t to breathe a word of it, or else she would kill his entire family!
"You really are as stubborn as a mule. What exactly did she offer you to make you so loyal that you’d even ignore your own King?" Zion was furious. He knew it would be difficult to produce hard evidence unless Davi confessed himself. But given how things had escalated, Ovillette surely had his own judgment. He should be able to see through the lies and wouldn’t believe the Princess and this doctor, right?
Davi stayed knelt on the floor, frantically playing on his sympathies. "Your Majesty, I’ve been by your side for so many years. I’ve taken care of your health, and you know what kind of person I am. I don’t know the first thing about hypnosis, so how could I have possibly hypnotized you? Your health was quite poor when you were younger, and I was the one who nursed you back into shape. After all these years of loyal service, you must believe me, Your Majesty."
After all his years of service, surely the King wouldn’t be so ruthless as to condemn him completely. Besides, none of that was the most important part. Everything had been done under the Princess’s orders. No matter what, she should be the one taking the fall.
Just then, the Princess spoke up through her tears. "I am the one who has been by your side all these years! Davi is the one who took care of your health! You and I were childhood sweethearts. Our bond was always unbreakable. But now? You’re questioning us because of a bunch of outsiders. You actually think we tried to harm you?
"Ovillette, if we wanted to hurt you, would you even be alive today? We have never wronged you in all these years. Everything we did was for your own good. We worried about your health; we supported you!
"These people are foreigners! They just want to tear us apart from the inside and bring ruin to Elandra. Darling, you absolutely cannot believe them!"
Quentin Blackwood and Ivy Sherwood stood silently to the side. The truth would speak for itself. Moreover, for Ovillette to have become King, he had to possess his own sense of judgment. If he were truly swayed by a few words from the Princess and suspected them of having ulterior motives, then there was no point in continuing the conversation.
Ovillette, indeed, did not believe the Princess and Davi. In fact, he no longer knew which of their words were true and which were lies.
"What exactly happened between me and Winter Mercer?"
At the mention of Winter Mercer, both the Princess and Davi fell silent.
"Speak!"
"I don’t know. I really don’t know any Winter Mercer," the Princess shook her head.
"You don’t know her, yet you look this guilty? Or are you so confident that I won’t be able to find anything out, that I’ll never remember her for the rest of my life?"
Although he couldn’t remember right now, Ovillette felt certain that he eventually would. He desperately wanted to recall what kind of past he shared with Winter.
His head seemed to ache again. The agonizing pain felt like a punishment.
The Princess kept shaking her head. "I don’t know! I really don’t know! Ovillette, I am your wife. How could you side with outsiders against me? How can you treat me like this? After being married to you for so many years, have you forgotten how much I love you and how good I’ve been to you?"
Not only did the Princess feel zero remorse, but she also genuinely believed she had done the right thing. Everything she did was for Ovillette—all because of Winter Mercer.
"If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t even be sitting on that throne! You wouldn’t even know where you’d be right now! Everything you’ve achieved today is because of me! You heartless man, how could you do this to me!"
