Chapter 3087: Chapter 3088: Loss of Sensation

"At this moment, isn’t it rather inappropriate for us to seek an audience?" Bai Ruozhu looked at Jiang Yichun and asked.

Jiang Yichun nodded. No matter who in the Royal Family had passed away, it was chaotic now, and their appearance would indeed be awkward, not to mention proposing the matter of borrowing the Supreme Treasure of the Western Regions Royal Family.

"Why not let the esteemed guests wait for a bit while I inquire about the situation, and then report back to you?" The guard seemed sharp-witted and said proactively.

"Alright, thank you for your trouble," Bai Ruozhu said.

The guard took his leave, and Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun returned to the Side Hall where they were staying.

"What happened?" Gao Zhou immediately asked as he saw them return.

"It’s a mourning announcement. I don’t know who in the Royal Family has died," Jiang Yichun replied.

Gao Zhou furrowed his brows. He was more knowledgeable about matters within the Royal Family than most, having spent several years in the Chengshui Imperial Palace.

"Such a significant event, and no one has come to appease the envoys. It must truly be in chaos," he said meaningfully.

Tiaotiao came over and nestled up to Bai Ruozhu, who picked up her young son and said, "A reliable guard has gone to inquire. We’ll likely have confirmation soon."

Gao Zhou nodded and refrained from saying anything further.

Bai Ruozhu suddenly felt her eyelid twitch, a sign of unease in her heart. An important person’s death—could it be the king?

She shook her head quietly. It wasn’t long ago that she last saw the king of the Western Regions. He wasn’t old, even younger by two years than Bai Ruozhu’s father, Bai Yihong, and his health was robust.

Furthermore, with the Western Regions having eradicated the Divine Hall’s dictatorship, there was nothing left to threaten the king’s safety.

"Ruozhu, my father has woken up. He says his hand is numb. Could you take a look at him?" Ao Song entered the hall and said.

Bai Ruozhu pulled her thoughts back and said, "Alright."

Zhong Kui had lost a finger, so upon waking, he should feel pain, not numbness.

She followed Ao Song to Zhong Kui’s room. Upon entering, she saw Zhong Kui sitting there with a somewhat vacant look, as if he had suddenly aged ten years. Even as an outsider, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of compassion.

The Patriarch of the Zhong Family, once so illustrious, had overnight been brought low.

"Uncle Zhong," Bai Ruozhu greeted politely.

Zhong Kui pulled himself from his thoughts and masked the desolation in his eyes. He smiled at her and said, "Ruozhu, thank you all."

"You’re too kind, Uncle Zhong. Ao Song has helped me in many ways too," Bai Ruozhu said as she walked to the bedside to examine his wound.

"It doesn’t hurt much. I thought your medicine worked wonders, but it seems this hand won’t move," Zhong Kui explained.

Bai Ruozhu frowned slightly. She hadn’t used any anesthesia. They were all experts with inner strength; anesthesia wasn’t needed for a procedure of this scale, so Zhong Kui’s hand shouldn’t be immobile.

She examined it closely again, then checked Zhong Kui’s pulse, but the Pulse seemed fine, merely showing signs of blood deficiency.

"There’s no poisoning, and the medicine wasn’t wrong, so it’s not within the realm of Medical Skills. It’s likely something the Zhong Family did," she concluded.

"What? How could they be so cruel!" Madam Zhong exclaimed with some agitation, her eyes instantly reddening.

Zhong Kui gave a wry smile and patted his wife with his good hand, saying, "They fear I might prevent them from harming Songsong, so they made preparations, though I can’t figure out exactly what it is."

Madam Zhong and Ao Song looked again but couldn’t discern anything either.

Bai Ruozhu opened her mouth but didn’t voice her thoughts. Madam Zhong and Ao Song were already suffering; it was better to take things slowly.
