Chapter 388 - 182: Pursuit
Chapter 388: Chapter 182: Pursuit
He had encountered plenty of Superpower Users, but this was his first time seeing one with an invisibility Superpower. That kind of ability was incredibly advantageous in combat; one could sneak up on an enemy soundlessly and finish them with a single, decisive blow.
If not for that gust of wind, if his peripheral vision hadn’t caught the outline, the man might have already snuck up behind him.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Xu Mo abruptly rolled over, aimed the muzzle of his AK47 at the human-shaped silhouette, and pulled the trigger.
"BANG! BANG! BANG!"
A three-round burst tore through the air.
"AH—!"
An agonized scream followed the gunshots.
The transparent silhouette shuddered violently and then rapidly became distinct. A man in camouflage fatigues materialized, a spray of blood blooming on his chest. His eyes were wide with disbelief before his body went limp and collapsed into the tall grass.
Xu Mo had no time to spare him a glance. The moment he fired, his own position was exposed.
He immediately dropped and began to roll rapidly across the grass.
Just as he expected, the instant he rolled away, a figure burst from the grass to his front left. The figure moved with incredible speed, leaping from the foliage with their rifle already aimed at where Xu Mo had just been.
"RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT—"
A burst of gunfire erupted. Bullets poured down like a torrential rain, leaving a string of holes in the ground behind Xu Mo. Dirt flew and grass danced as the line of impacts chased his rolling path.
But Xu Mo was faster. He rolled continuously across the grass, changing direction with each rotation to make his movements unpredictable. The bullets kept chasing him, but they were always just a fraction too slow.
’Four of them!’
Xu Mo quickly calculated in his head. ’I’ve already killed three: the driver, the female co-pilot, and the Superpower User with invisibility. That leaves just one—the person shooting at me now!’
Bullets continued to whiz past him. In the middle of a roll, Xu Mo drew the TT33 pistol holstered on his right hip.
The pistol wasn’t particularly powerful, but it was more than enough at close range.
Still rolling, Xu Mo raised the pistol, aimed at the figure firing from his front-left, and squeezed the trigger repeatedly.
"BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!"
Four rounds, fired almost simultaneously.
The shooter’s body jolted, as if struck by a heavy blow. Their gunfire cut off abruptly, and they stumbled backward, collapsing heavily into the grass.
Xu Mo didn’t stop, however. He rolled several more times, only coming to a halt once he confirmed that no new bullets were coming his way. He ended up prone in a new spot.
Silence returned to the clearing, broken only by the rustle of wind through the blades of grass.
Xu Mo strained his ears, listening intently. There were no footsteps, no groans. But he didn’t dare let his guard down.
Another two minutes passed without a sound.
Only then did Xu Mo slowly raise his head, peering out through the gaps between the blades of grass.
Seventy or eighty meters to his front-left, the figure lay motionless in the grass. From the position of the body, he looked dead.
Thirty meters to his right, the Invisible Man was also lying in the grass. Blood was still seeping from his chest, but he was no longer breathing.
Once he was certain there was no more danger, Xu Mo slowly got to his feet. He held his AK47 at the ready and cautiously approached the two corpses.
He first walked over to the Superpower User’s corpse. It was a young man in his twenties with ordinary features, dressed in camouflage. He had three bullet holes in his chest—two in the heart, one in the lung. He was clearly dead, though his eyes remained open, his face frozen in an expression of utter disbelief.
He gave the body a nod of respect, then walked toward the other corpse.
This one was a man in his thirties with a lean, tough build, also dressed in camouflage. He had been hit by four bullets: two to the chest, one to the abdomen, and one to the thigh. He too had died instantly, showing no signs of a struggle.
Xu Mo searched the body but only found a few odds and ends.
Just then, Xu Mo heard the roar of an engine in the distance.
Puzzled, Xu Mo looked up.
A pickup truck appeared on the horizon, speeding in his direction.
Xu Mo frowned.
’Their accomplices? Or just some passing survivors?’
Xu Mo stood beside his SUV, cradling his AK47, and watched the pickup truck draw nearer. He had a plan: if they were just passing through, he would offer a smile and a nod. If they were hostile, well, the gun in his hands wasn’t just for decoration.
The pickup truck drew near quickly, and it seemed to slow down as it approached Xu Mo’s position on the road. Xu Mo could see the driver was a man in his thirties.
However, as the driver slowed and caught sight of Xu Mo holding a gun with corpses lying at his feet, his expression instantly changed. The pickup then shot forward as if he’d hit the nitrous, rocketing away.
Xu Mo: ...
"Am I really that scary?"
Muttering to himself, Xu Mo went back to scavenging for supplies.
Xu Mo didn’t take any of the food or water from the enemy vehicle, only scavenging what ammunition he could use. After siphoning enough fuel to top off his own tank, Xu Mo got back in his car and returned to the highway.
By this point, half the sun was already below the horizon, and Xu Mo had no desire to spend the night anywhere near the corpses.
He drove through the wilderness for another half-hour, and only after confirming that no one was following him did Xu Mo find a place to stop for the night.
This time, Xu Mo chose a relatively concealed hollow surrounded by small hills that would block the view. He drove his car into the depression, but he didn’t rest right away. Instead, he began to mentally review the lessons from today’s fight.
