Chapter 24: Clearing Path

Alex side-stepped in the nick of time, and he could feel the gust of wind that followed along when the fists of the chimpanzee smashed down into the ground, right in front of his eyes.

Crack.

The concrete on the pavement cracked from the impact.

"EEK!" The chimpanzee shrieked and it swung its fist to the side at Alex.

Alex leaped away from it and a portal appeared right in front of the chimpanzee’s face.

In the next moment, the face was lit in an amber tint when the fireball shot out from the portal came near to it.

And within such a short distance, it had no chance to dodge it.

Boom!

The face of the chimpanzee exploded, with the top quarter part of its head ripped off by the explosion.

It gave out a loud shriek in pain.

Flames caught onto the fur of the chimpanzee and it swung its arms around frantically to try and put it out.

It staggered around aimlessly and tripped onto the ground while shrieking in pain non-stop.

Then, it turned quiet and lay motionlessly on the ground after a few moments.

Alex quickly glanced over at Eddy and Lin.

Lin was held by the chimpanzee that had attacked them and Eddy was trying to free him from the grasp of the chimpanzee with his Ice Wielding ability.

Whoosh.

Eddy blew a cloud of white mist at the stone hand of the chimpanzee but it didn’t work.

The white mist turned into ice when it touched onto the hand.

But the ice that had frozen onto the hand of the chimpanzee wasn’t strong enough against the strength of the chimpanzee.

The chimpanzee released its grasp on Lin and broke the ice easily.

Eddy tried to grab onto Lin and pull him away but the other hand of the chimpanzee came at him.

Crack.

The hand of the chimpanzee slammed into the ground, nearly taking Eddy down with it.

Eddy rolled to the side in the nick of time but he was now a distance away from Lin.

The chimpanzee wanted to hold onto Lin but a portal appeared in front of its face in the next moment.

Alex had gotten near to it for him to manifest the portal.

Then, purple gas was emitted out from the portal and the chimpanzee gave out a shriek after it inhaled some of it.

It couldn’t be bothered with Lin anymore and it was gagging and coughing due to its airways and lungs burning from the purple poisonous gas.

Blood started to drip from its mouth, nose and eyes.

Its eyes lost focus as it tried to turn around and flee but the injuries from the poisonous gas were too much for it.

Plop.

The chimpanzee dropped dead to the ground after taking a step.

A familiar sound erupted in his mind and information panels with words appeared in it.

[Congratulations to Host for killing off 2 mutated beasts.]

[Dispensing rewards now:]

[100x bottles of water.]

[100x packets of MRE ration.]

[All items are stored in your storage space now.]

[Current status: 149/200]

[Day 2 of 3 for SSS Level Storage Ability.]

With the two chimpanzees attacking them dead, Alex turned over and checked on the status of his friends.

Thankfully, they were done with taking care of the chimpanzees too.

Riley seemed to be the most relaxed among the three of them.

His ability worked better against the chimpanzees and he was feeling better with his ability now compared to before.

"You could have asked me for help you know." He walked over and patted the back of Terry while Terry was wiping the sweat off his forehead.

Brian shook his head at them and said, "We better move, there might be more of them around."

"Indeed, we need to get Lin over to the school of Bio-science to see if anyone there can help." Alex chimed in with Lin by his side.

Lin’s face was pale and he grimaced with pain whenever he moved his body.

His rib cage might have been fractured by the grasp of the chimpanzee.

And even his enhanced physique as an Awakened wasn’t enough to withstand it.

The others nodded their heads and they continued on their trip towards the school of Bio-science.

While they walked, Alex thought about the need of having someone with the ability to heal if possible once again.

It would certainly increase their chances of survival in the future by a lot.

He sighed to himself silently as there wasn’t much he could do for now, except to figure out more about what was happening, and keep him and his friends safe for the time being.

They walked for a few more minutes and they stopped in front of the school of Bio-science building.

"Finally, we have arrived." Riley said when he glanced up at the entrance of the building in front of him.

The pristine white wall of the building was now smudged with blood all over.

Some bloodied palm prints could be seen with the owner of the palm prints lying beneath the wall.

Their heads were gone with a puddle of blood that had pooled around their bodies.

Alex glanced into the entrance and he could see dead bodies.

But other than that, there was no one else still alive except for them.

He turned at Brian and asked, "Where did you make contact with them previously?"

Brian pointed at a barricaded window at the top floor of the building and said, "Over there, they must be hiding inside."

"Was the entrance exposed when you flew the drone over?" Alex asked to make sure and Brian shook his head.

"The entrance was barricaded when I flew the drone over last night."

Alex frowned and gave out a sigh.

That means that something had happened between the time from then until now.

"I guess our work isn’t over yet. Everyone ready?" He said and the others nodded their heads.

They had to clear the path to get to the personnel that were barricaded up above the building.

Then, the six of them entered the building cautiously through the entrance.
