Chapter 50: Bad News

"What is it about?" Brian saw the deep frown that was on Alex’s face and asked.

Alex gave out a sigh and handed the piece of paper over to him.

The same thing happened to Brian after he read what was written on it.

"The sky fell down? What’s with the long faces?" Riley who was the only one left yet to have read the note asked.

"Teresa did some experiments on the mutated beasts they’ve managed to capture.

"She fed some of the flesh from the dead mutated beasts to those that were still alive.

"Out of those that were fed, they’ve turned even more rabid and they weren’t able to feel any pain anymore.

"That’s not the worst part of this.

"She went on and experimented with the lab rats they had that didn’t mutate.

"These lab rats turned into less powerful versions of those mindless and rabid mutated rats."

Alex said and gave out a long sigh.

"You mean, if someone was to eat the flesh of those mutated beasts out of desperation, they would turn into something similar?" Riley pointed at the piece of paper and asked.

Alex and Brian gave him a nod.

"What the hell?! These government pricks shall pay for what they are doing to us!" Riley cursed at the boarded-up window of Brian’s room.

This time, Alex didn’t stop Riley but sat where he was and pondered.

The authorities had indeed been oddly missing after a few days.

On the first or second day, the mutated beasts were obviously still weak against the guns and other weapons of destruction that the authorities had at their disposal.

And yet, all they had was radio silence after warning everyone not to go out onto the streets.

Maybe the strange dark hailstorm and the dark fog weren’t an act of nature?

Were they bioweapons that had been unleashed by some adversaries?

There was something much more complicated going on but he was only able to scratch on the surface of it with the research from Teresa.

Alex gave out a long sigh, glanced at Riley and Brian and said, "We might have to move out of the campus to the HalMart that is three kilometers away tomorrow.

"I need you to check on the vehicles nearby to see if any of them are serviceable first thing in the morning."

"Finally, we get to check out on what’s happening outside." Riley said and nodded his head.

Brian was also prepared for it and did the same.

Both of them were eager to check out on what had happened outside of the college.

After the mobile and communications network went down, they were now blind to what was happening all over the city.

Speaking of which, Lin had come over to Brian’s room with something in his hands.

It was a few walkie talkie sets that were enough for all of them.

"These can work up to a 10KM range.

"Someone in the electronics engineering elective was into this so he had more than enough for all of us.

"We have a few sets for those who are leading the guard details.

"However, we might need to figure out a way to charge them." Lin said and Alex nodded his head.

Alex took out some of the mobile power banks he had and handed them over to Lin.

"This should be enough for the sets you have. I will try to get more later."

"Thanks, they should be enough to last us a few days."

Lin thanked him and left the room.

Alex picked up one of the walkie talkies and pressed on the button by the side.

Buzz.

The speaker of the walkie talkie gave out a buzzing sound.

He released it and kept it in the pocket of his jacket.

Alex was pleasantly surprised by what Lin had brought him.

With the walkie talkies they were now able to update each other from a distance.

When they went out in the future, they wouldn’t have to stick close to each other all the time.

And they could be updated with what was happening in the dorm building while they were away.

Riley and Brian were also happy with what they’ve got but it was short-lived.

They frowned when Terry came back beaming with a huge smile.

He had just finished the metallic walls before coming back to the room.

"Why do you look so happy?" Riley narrowed his eyes at Terry and asked.

Terry patted on the back of his head and replied, "Nothing. I was only thinking about dinner.

"I’m starving already."

He rubbed onto his tummy and glanced over at Alex.

"Maybe you should go on a diet now?" Alex said in jest and took out some food from his storage space.

"I’ll start tomorrow, I promise." Terry gave him a smile and he proceeded to start preparing dinner for everyone.

Riley and Brian shook their heads at him but didn’t say anything else, seeing how hard at work Terry was for their dinner.

And while Terry was preparing dinner, Alex told him about the note that he got and their plan for the next day.

Terry nodded his head to him while listening until dinner was done.

They enjoyed the meal in peace and after they were done, Alex went over to where Patricia and her friends were staying to pass them some bottles of water and some ration packs.

Patricia and her friends were close to tears when they were able to enjoy water and food after such a long and disastrous three days for them.

They thanked him profusely but he reiterated to them that they would have to be part of the guarding detail or help out in the maintenance or chores of the dorm building.

It was what they had agreed upon so it wasn’t much of an issue for Patricia and her friends.

After he was done with them, Alex went back to Brian’s room to wash up and rest for the day.

Then, he stayed up and waited for midnight to arrive.

He was anxious to see what his new ability was.

Finally, when the clock struck twelve, a familiar sound erupted in his mind.

Information panels with words started to appear in it.
