Chapter 55: First Encounter Outside

Vroom!

After Alex and the others got into the car, the engine roared to life after Riley stepped on the gas pedal.

The car moved out from the parking lot and they headed down the road where it led them to the supermarket and gas station that was near it.

"Wow. Look out." Terry said and held onto the side of the seat that was in front of him when car did a hard right to dodge another car that was parked horizontally in front of it.

"Relax." Riley said and he stepped on the pedal again.

The sudden jerk made the others feel as if someone had pushed them onto the back of the seat.

After becoming an Awakened, Riley’s reaction time was many times faster than before so he made use of this chance to test out what he had wanted to for so long.

Screech.

The car drifted to its right with its tires giving out a high pitched screeching sound, and it left trails of burnt tire marks on the road behind it.

"I’ll be driving on the way back." Terry said when he sat back up right on his seat.

Brian nodded his head at the suggestion.

While this was going on, Alex who was seated beside Riley, had been observing the surroundings.

The woods that lined up the sides of the road looked the same as how they were before.

If it wasn’t the fact that there were few cars that were stopped haphazardly on the road, he wouldn’t be able to know that the apocalypse had happened.

And the cars that were stopped also told him that there might be mutated beasts out there hiding among the woods.

From the looks of it, this wouldn’t be an uneventful trip for them.

As the car turned into a road from a junction, they got near to a street with rows of houses by the side.

Alex frowned when he sensed that there were others alive further up front.

"There’s someone waiting for us, speed up." He said and Riley nodded his head.

Vroom.

The engine of the car roared again and the tires screeched before it sped up.

"Hurry! They are trying to get away!" Shouts could be heard once their car sped through the street.

Men carrying rifles ran out from the houses.

"Stop and give us whatever you have on you to stay alive!"

Then, two trucks came out from the side of the streets.

The trucks drove into the road horizontally together, trying to block the way of Alex and his friends.

"Hold on tight." Riley said and shifted the gear before flooring the pedal.

And as the car picked up more speed, it was getting closer and closer to the trucks.

Alex frowned and he figured that they weren’t going to make it.

Two slits appeared on top of the engine of the two trucks and they opened up into portals.

Then, huge metallic blocks descended from the portals and they crashed down onto the engine of the trucks.

Crush.

The weight and velocity of the metallic blocks crushed the engine of the trucks into a pulp and they stopped where they were.

Windshield of the trucks shattered into pieces and the drivers of these trucks were flung out from it with their seat belts stopping their trajectory and holding them back.

Whoosh.

The car where Alex and his friends were in sped by with only mere inches of space left between the trucks.

One of the door handle of the car doors was caught and it was flung into the air.

Shots from the men whistled by them and they were further and further away from the men.

"Woohoo. We did it!" Terry exclaimed in joy and he glanced at the two trucks that were now like a heap of scrap metal.

"What do you mean we did it? It was me and Alex." Riley glanced at the rear view mirror and said.

"No time for this, it isn’t over yet." Alex stopped them and pointed to a man that was standing in the middle of the road in front of them.

The man, with a shiny bald head, smirked at them while he held up his hand and snapped his fingers.

"What the hell!" Riley tried to steer the car straight but it didn’t respond to it.

He cursed as the car slowly turned to its side.

The road that they were on wobbled like waves in an ocean, pushing the car over.

It got more and more and with a huge wave from the road, the car was finally toppled over to its side.

Baldy was an Awakened.

"Get out of the car while I deal with him." Alex shouted and the others quickly moved.

He glanced at what Baldy was doing and he could see that the soil and rocks from the ground were starting to gather in front of Baldy.

The soil and rocks began to turn into sharp pointed spikes.

Baldy then raised his arms and flagged his hands down.

Whoosh.

The spikes shot at Alex and the others.

But before they could get close, a slit appeared in the air and opened up.

In the next moment, the spikes were absorbed into the portal.

"What..." Baldy’s eyes opened wide when he saw what happened but he didn’t have much time to think about it.

A slit appeared on top of him and it had opened up.

He felt the temperature rise and when he lifted his head to see what was happening, pillars of fire descended on him.

Baldy’s head was lit up like a light bulb by the flames.

He quickly raised his hands and the road surrounding him started to rise and cover him up.

The pillars of fire started burning the asphalt, soil and rocks from the road.

Baldy gave out a sigh of relief but unbeknownst to him, it wasn’t over.

Huge bubbles descended from the portal.

Boom!

When the bubbles touched onto the cover of Baldy, explosions ensued.

The impact of the explosion blew off whatever was covering him.

And the shock wave from the explosion ruptured through his internal organs, causing him to bleed from the side of his lips.
