"Why would she increase the rent for no reason?" Second Aunt Lei was quite happy when she heard that she was allowed to stay, but when she heard that she had to pay extra money, she was not happy. Why should their family pay more just because they were staying with the Lei family? She took a bite of the red apple that was sitting in the middle of the fruit basket in the kitchen. "That’s just unfair."

Mother Lei looked at her sister-in-law and curled her lips. "Sister-in-law, have you forgotten the good things that you said to Yueyue? I hope you do not, because if you remembered, then you would have never asked such a silly question."

As soon as she finished speaking, Second Aunt Lei’s face turned quite pale, and she could not help but flush red in embarrassment. "That was so long ago; is she still holding a grudge over such a small matter?" She wanted to say that Bai Meiyue was being petty for no reason, but then she thought of something and changed her mind. Turning to look at her sister-in-law, she licked her lips and asked in a low voice, "Sister-in-law, do you think you can convince Ah Qian to let Ah Wu come inside—"

"Sister-in-law," Mother Lei interrupted whatever Second Aunt Lei was going to say. She turned and looked over at her, abandoning her actions of cutting the potatoes. She looked at her sister-in-law sternly before saying to her, "It’s my son’s limit to accept you and Mother, even though you have schemed against him again and again. Please don’t try to break his limits by pushing him even further. I am afraid that he would be too furious to even listen to his grandmother if you bring your son inside the safe base."

What a joke. They had bullied her son again and again, and now they wanted him to save them? How could she be willing to allow such a thing? Lei Wu tried to kill his son on numerous occasions; it was enough that she was willing to show her sister-in-law some face and let her stay with her.

"Humph, what are you so proud of?" Second Aunt Lei snorted, showing her dissatisfaction, but just then Lei Yan walked into the kitchen with a smile that was not a smile. "What is going on, ladies? Why are you two standing here?" Though she said that, Lei Yan had heard everything that was going on in the kitchen. She turned to look at her aunt with a smile on her lips. "Second Aunt, I don’t know whether you have heard it or not, but I did hear this quote, and it said that one should be satisfied with what they have, especially when they are in the wrong."

Second Aunt Lei glared at her before turning around on her heels and walking away. She did not look like a woman who understood the principle of being in the wrong.

Lei Yan watched her leave and sighed. She then turned to look at her mother and said to her in a low voice, "Why did you listen to her nonsense to this point? Look at what she and Grandmother did. They pushed brother to take on another mission as soon as he woke up. I cannot understand how grandfather cannot see it. They are the cause of most of our troubles! He should be listening to us and not them."

"Don’t speak about your grandfather like that; he is still your elder." Mother Lei was just as tired as well. She was already troubled due to the attitude of her father-in-law, and on top of that, her mother-in-law and her sister-in-law were allowed back into the family. Not even three hours had passed, and Old Madam Lei was already ordering her around. She asked her to make braised pork as soon as she entered the house. What kind of starving woman required braised pork to ease her hunger? Usually, a starving person would only eat some light porridge.

Lei Yan rolled her eyes. "It is not as easy to accept when you think about how Brother has to suffer because of the second branch again."

Mother Lei paused and then sighed. "I know."

"What do you know, Mom?" Lei Qian stepped out of his room, fully loaded in his fighting gear. "What are you two talking about?" He glanced around the room and then turned to look at his mother before saying, "What did you find out?"

"What else? About your mission. Where are you going so soon?" She asked when she thought about how her son was about to leave the safe base to collect more crystal nuclei and that too because of those two! "Why did you not discuss this matter with anyone in the house?"

"I don’t have time." Lei Qian rolled his eyes as he marched toward the kitchen and picked up the dried rations that his mother had prepared for him. "I would have told you where I am going, but I am afraid that I don’t know it myself either. Yueyue said that she would tell me when we leave for a mission together—"

Mother Lei dropped the ladle in the pot when she heard that even Bai Meiyue was going on the mission. What was going on? Why was Bai Meiyue, who had given birth just a few days ago, running outside to kill zombies?

"What is she going outside for? She is still in her postpartum!" Mother Lei snapped at her son. "Why did you not ask her to stay back? What is she going to do?" Was killing the second ranks zombies so difficult that her son had to bring Bai Meiyue with him? She narrowed her eyes and asked, "Tell me, are you so weak that you even need someone like Bai Meiyue to help you?"

In her eyes, Bai Meiyue was still recovering. How could she be powerful in her condition? And how strong was she for Lei Qian to ask for help from her?
