Halfway through Qin An’s sprinting, he noticed that the evil spirits became more and more aggressive when he turned in a certain direction. They start attacking him at all costs as if they are getting desperate to push him away from the direction that he’s going.

His eyes glint. If this is their attitude that only meant that he was in the right direction.

He also starts counterattacking with more forces and dodge the attacks while trying to observe the location. It was still a dense forest where the branches of trees were much larger. The dark energy is also more concentrated.

As if they’ve been gathering here.

His eyes narrowed. He’s right.

"Go away! Don’t steal the tree of life! It’s ours! It’s ours!"

"You have no right to take the only life here! Leave this place and die!"

"No." He answered coldly. His fingers executed into a strange formation and a large golden circle formed mida-ir. Black chains are emerging from it and it starts to constantly wrap around the evil spirits and drag them into it.

They begin shouting in pain from the intense burning sensation and the screams of their agony filled the withered forest yet Qin An took that chance of distraction to quicken his pace. His eyes were looking forward because he had seen something familiar ahead.

And he was not wrong because after more sprinting, what he’s seeing was confirmed.

It’s the ginkgo tree.

The large towering tree stood tall in the middle of this withered forest. Its golden leaves were flushed and dense and it was saying gently. It was the only light that remained on this planet, and the only main reason why it didn’t end in destruction long ago.

What delighted him even more was when he was near the tree, he also saw familiar faces. It was Ji Wen and others.

They stood near the tree and were surrounded by the magic circle that surprised him.

It only dawned him when he finally saw who was standing in front of everyone, Zhi Anming.

A grim reaper.

Qin An was really surprised and finally realized the reason why he felt like the golden core inside the young man’s body wasn’t the same as Shen Lou’s and others. It is indeed a junior grim reaper. "Senior!" Zhi Anming also spotted him and quickly shouted in joy.

He nodded and stopped near them. He scanned everyone and paused when he noticed something.

"Where’s the Marshal?"

"...." No one answered him.

For some unknown reason, his heart skipped a beat for a second. "Where’s the Marshal?" He repeated, not noticing his tone turned colder.

"Senior, we don’t know." Zhi Anming shook his head. "He was also enveloped by the dark energy and disappeared like you."

He fell silent. His grip on the sword tightened. Enveloped by dark energy? That man’s situation has already been on the verge of breaking down and now he went like that? He fears now that the latter’s situation is more dangerous than him.

"Go near the tree." He instructed and looked at Shen Zhi and Su Jinxi. "Can you feel it?"

The two nodded with an eager expression on their faces.

"I can see white mist surrounding the tree." Shen Zhi answered with her eyes glued towards the tree. "It feels very comfortable. I want to go near it."

"Then go. I don’t know how it works but if you can see the spiritual energy around the tree, that means that there’s a way of gathering it towards you." He turned towards the hoard of dark energies and evil spirits around them. "The rest would also go near the tree to avoid pollution."

"Then, Senior, I will help you—"

"Can you open the gate?" He asked instead.

Qin An has to reserve more energy to fight against the enemies so he cannot waste it on the plan in his mind.

"The gate?" Zhi Anming was surprised.

"Open the gate of the underworld. I will go back and ask for help." His face turned solemn and sharp. "I want to take back my identity."

Qin An was determined this time, even if it means to end this life as a human. He doesn’t want to stay this weak. He cannot protect everyone.

As long as he can be the same grim reaper as he was, he can save many, and even the Marshal.

Zhi Anming pursed his lips and nodded heavily. He guided others near the tree while he fully focused on what’s in front of him.

Qin An no longer hesitates to use all his remaining power. The wind swayed sharper and he raised the sword and placed it in front of him. The golden runes around shines and so as the runes in his eyes. The next second, the sword unleashed a large golden spiritual energy and he darted towards the enemies.

Soon, the sounds of chaos engulfed the whole withered forest. There was no blood nor any sounds of weapons clashing but the atmosphere was more eerie and dangerous.

Instead, the series of screams from different people echoes. It came from men and women, whether they are young and old, all of them were just howling in despair and even begging to stop the suffering.

Qin An’s heart remained calm. He knew that their pleas could no longer save them and the only way to stop their suffering is another kind of death. They would only keep on enduring in this world so the best way is to stop, not to punish but to put them at rest where they should belong.

Yet as he said, this human body is weak. Soon, his body grew weaker after being exposed by the dark energies. Qin An kept on coughing blood but his grip on the sword remained steady and strong.

He wanted to attack again when he heard a shout beside him.

"Senior, it’s open!"

He halted and turned his head. The familiar large and wide gate was floating in the air. It was dark and majestic and the runes around the pillars created an entirely magical sense.

The corner of his lips curled up. He was about to dash immediately towards the gate when Ji Wen suddenly called a name behind him.

"Marshal!"
