Chapter 172: FROM ONE USELESS TO ANOTHER
Seara knocked on the door, but there was no response from inside. She called Jeremy’s name, but he didn’t respond to that either.
In the end, she rapped her fist continuously until Jeremy gave up and finally opened the door for her.
"What do you want?" Jeremy asked, a little bit rudely. He was not in the mood to be nice to anyone because people around him had been blaming him.
What he thought was a great idea was nothing but a disaster that he brought upon his family, and now he had put everyone in danger. He didn’t want to meet with anyone because he was angry with himself and also ashamed.
"I have two pies. Do you want one?" Seara showed two pies that she brought with her.
"I don’t want to eat anything. Get lost."
"I thought you were ordered to protect me?" She reminded Jeremy of Zade’s order to be with her and how she was his responsibility now. "How can you tell me to get lost?"
"Zephyr will do a better job."
"Nah. He should be with Zade. You know that Zade needs all the helping hands—or feet—he can get to help, right? You can help too by keeping your eyes on me."
Jeremy furrowed his brows. He didn’t understand where this conversation was heading. "You have four other warriors who are assigned to you. You will be fine." He then added bitterly. "Don’t worry, my failure has not yet caught up. You don’t need me."
Whenever Jeremy thought he was helping, he actually made things worse. He was not like his brother, Ace, who could put everything under control and actually fix things instead of ruining them.
Yeah, probably because he was only their adopted son; that was why all of their good qualities didn’t run in his veins.
Jeremy crossed his arms and leaned against the doorframe, preventing Seara from entering his room.
"Who said I don’t need you?" Seara widened her eyes in shock. "Of course, I need you. I need all the protection that I can get. I can’t shift into my wolf form, remember? So, I’m pretty much useless here, since I can’t protect myself."
"You sound almost proud of your defenselessness." Jeremy didn’t understand the girl in front of him. "If you need me for something, I am useless. I can’t help. Leave now."
His father’s words struck him deeply because he had asked Jeremy not to do anything, implying that doing nothing was more than helping.
Jeremy understood that his father was angry when he said those words. Yet, it was Jeremy’s greatest fear—being a burden.
"Okay, so, from one useless to another, why don’t we talk about the phone call that you made?"
"What do you want to talk about?" Jeremy narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
"Maybe your idea about Olivia is not so bad."
Jeremy rolled his eyes and then stepped back to close the door, but Seara put her hand out to stop it. "Zade will be angry if I get my hand caught in the door because of you."
And because Seara put her hand on the door frame, Jeremy couldn’t push the door closed. "Are you crazy? Get away, Seara."
"I only want to talk."
"No!"
And then Little Paw slipped through the gap and bit Jeremy’s pants to pull him away from the door so Seara could enter.
"Seriously, you also side with her?!"
***
[I want to talk to Zade; please, let me enter the meeting room.] Jeremy mind-linked Zephyr, with Seara sitting next to him, playing with Little Paw.
[You are punished not to go out of your room, and Zade is busy.] Zephyr replied; he was startled when he heard Jeremy’s voice abruptly in his head, because he had been closing his mind after being heavily reprimanded.
[Actually, Seara has an idea, and she wants to know if this is applicable.]
Jeremy glanced at Seara, who was sitting next to him, and she looked back at him, asking how it was. "Zephyr didn’t believe it. He closed the mindlink."
Hearing that, Seara pursed her lips. "Let’s go there then."
"What are you going to do if Zade refuses?"
Seara gave some thought to it and then smiled so widely from ear to ear, the kind of smile that could make you think she won a lottery.
"Don’t smile like that; you are creepy."
"Zade has never refused me. Do you think he will refuse me?" Seara felt giddy with the realization.
Jeremy thought about the situation for a moment, and in the end, he decided to give in. "Fine, whatever. But you need to know that if Zade gets angry, I’m going to say that you were the one who insisted and threatened me to interrupt his meeting."
Seara managed to convince Jeremy that there was a way for him to fix it, and his phone call with Olivia was not completely a bad idea. If they could turn the tables around, it could give them the benefit, since the other party might still think the shifters were clueless that they were coming after them in here.
"Come on, we don’t have time."
Groaning, Jeremy had no other choice but to let Seara take him to the meeting room. There was a hope that he squeezed ruthlessly, that he might not completely mess things up, and people could see that he was trying to help instead of ruining their plan.
Jeremy watched Seara run in front of him while dragging him along with her as they descended the stairs and went to the meeting room.
But before that, they were stopped by Zephyr.
"Where are you going? Go back to your room," Zephyr said sternly to Jeremy.
"No, I want to talk to Zade, and I need Jeremy to be there to help me." Seara didn’t let go of Jeremy’s hand.
Meanwhile, Jeremy showed the hand that was in Seara’s grip, as if telling Zephyr that he was helpless and it was all on Seara.
