Chapter 212: I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE
"You are wasting time by fighting me, Alpha Rune, and if your son died because of the delay, then it would be on you!" Seara’s voice was steady enough for everyone there to hear her clearly.
No one dared to say anything at this point, as they looked at one another in confusion over this commotion.
Seara didn’t threaten Alpha Rune, but she stated the fact. She was not going to back down easily.
From the corner of her eye, Seara saw Silas and Rexton staring at her. Unfortunately for her, they were among the people who survived the explosion because they were not at the pack house.
Both of them were helping to find the survivors, but they stopped and watched the commotion instead. The other people continued their search, yet they still glanced back and forth to Seara and Alpha Rune.
"Shut up! Are you trying to jinx my son?" Rune was a tall alpha, like most of them were, and he was towering above Seara when he shouted at her, with Jared and Kayden between them. His brown eyes turned red, and his brown hair was disheveled.
It was Jared who pushed him back. "I saw what you have done, and you didn’t make any progress. It doesn’t hurt you to listen to her suggestion on how to save your son. You need to lower your ego if you want your son to live. This is not about you, Alpha Rune; this is about the child."
There was a tension between them; it made the air feel so dense, and everyone was holding their breath, waiting for Alpha Rune’s decision.
However, Seara didn’t wait; she immediately told him what she had in mind. "Lift that wall, and then someone can slide down into the rubble and get the boy. I have seen there is enough room for someone to crawl inside."
For a moment, Alpha Rune remained motionless; instead, it was Kayden who stepped forward, assuming the command by telling the other warriors to lift the wall and asking Jared to check whether or not what Seara said was right, whether there was indeed enough of a gap for someone to crawl beneath it.
"Yes, there is enough room for someone, but this person should be slim enough to get inside," Jared confirmed, and he was a little bit frustrated with the gap. "The gap is too narrow."
Under the wall, there appeared to be large chunks of debris, likely pillars, which might explain why Alpha Rune’s son was still alive. However, the fact that he couldn’t move suggested that there must be something that was trapping him. The boy kept saying he was hurt.
"There is no warrior who can crawl there!" Alpha Rune said in frustration, punching the dirt. The heavy equipment would arrive in three hours while they didn’t know how severe his son’s injury was. But if they had to wait for that long... anything could happen.
Most of the warriors had the same build, but even for the slimmest one, they would still be stuck there. With such a narrow gap, they would need a teenager, at least.
"Find a boy around the age of thirteen to fifteen to get inside!" Alpha Rune ordered. Even the young shifter grew very fast, but younger than thirteen, he didn’t think they would have the guts to crawl beneath the wall and be calm enough to listen to the instruction.
In case of panic, they would get more trouble than help. All of them understood that logic; they also needed to find someone gutsy enough to do this dangerous thing.
"There is no need; I will go there. I will fit in." Seara had wanted to tell him this plan, but this hot-headed alpha kept cutting her off.
"What?" Leigh was shocked. Then, in a hissing tone, she told her that she shouldn’t have done that. "You can’t do that. Do you know how dangerous it is?" She felt her heart skip a beat.
They were here with only one order: to keep her safe, but if she volunteered to go through danger, what could they do? If something happened to Seara, their necks were on the line.
"No, absolutely not!" Kayden was the first person who rejected the idea. He had been close with her in the past few days, and they had gone through a lot together. Therefore, at this point, he protected her not only because he had to, since it was his duty, but also because he didn’t want anything bad to happen to her.
"You can’t go there, Seara," Jared said. He held Seara’s hand, as if to prevent her from rushing into the rubble.
Meanwhile, Alpha Rune didn’t say anything. He narrowed his eyes with suspicion, as if he was trying to find what motivation Seara had to volunteer to help him.
Yet, no matter how hard he thought about it, it didn’t bring any benefit to her. There was a high chance she was going to get stuck inside, or the wall collapsed on her. Even if Seara aimed to get on his good side, it wouldn’t make sense if she died.
"Let me go, Jared. I will be fine." Seara tried to wriggle her hand from Jared’s grip, but she still could see Sybill, who was walking around while smiling. No one was able to see her, but it didn’t matter. She was not afraid of this fact anymore.
"No, you can’t do that!" Jared and Kayden disagreed, and Leigh tried to persuade her too, but Seara had made a decision, and she wouldn’t budge.
"We are running out of time." And finally, Seara managed to make Jared step back, though it hurt her to talk to him sternly. "Help them lift the wall; I don’t know how long I need to be there."
And in that moment, Rune decided to speak. "Don’t hold me responsible if something happens to you. I have never asked you to do it."
