Chapter 732: Chapter 720: I Want You to Marry Me (8)
’Go abroad? And never come back for the rest of my life?’
A sharp pain shot through Eleanor Bishop’s heart, as if it had been pierced by a needle. Her face turned deathly pale, and tears began to stream down her cheeks.
Her lips trembled as she asked anxiously, "So, Mom... did you agree?" She knew her mother had already agreed, but she asked anyway, unwilling to accept it.
"Of course I agreed. Why wouldn’t I?" Yara Ross said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
Hearing her mother’s words, Eleanor Bishop let go of Yara Ross’s arm and took a step back.
She gave a self-deprecating laugh.
Even though they had already separated, with no chance of ever getting back together, he wouldn’t even leave her with a final shred of dignity.
How cruel... how utterly cruel...
’Archie Lockwood, are you that afraid I’ll cling to you? Are you that desperate to drive me far, far away?’
Harold Bishop was so enraged by Yara Ross’s casual dismissal that he nearly fainted. He grabbed the table in front of him for support and roared, "Yara Ross! You’ve gone too far!" ’To think she’d do anything for a bit of money!’
’He truly didn’t understand how he could have been so blind all those years ago, falling for a woman like her.’
Yara Ross sneered and shot back, "How have I gone too far, Harold? The terms Mr. Lockwood offered were amazing. Plus, he’s arranged for the best hospital and doctors for you abroad. You tell me, with an offer like that, what reason did I have to refuse?"
Harold Bishop trembled with rage. ’She did it for the money, but she dares to claim it was for my sake. How ridiculous!’
Eleanor Bishop wiped away her tears and asked, her voice thick with emotion, "Mom, how much did he give you?" ’No matter what he thinks of me,’ she resolved, ’I can’t take any more of his money.’
’Taking his money before was a last resort, born of desperation. Taking it again now would just be degrading and shameless.’
Seeing how furious both father and daughter were, Yara Ross quietly took a step back. Then, she held up two fingers and whispered, "Twenty million!"
"Twenty million???"
"Twenty million???" the father and daughter exclaimed in unison.
Yara Ross flinched slightly, then nodded. "Yes, twenty million!" She didn’t dare tell them the truth, the thought of the one-billion-dollar check silencing her.
Harold Bishop slammed his hand on the table and bellowed, "For a mere twenty million, you trampled all over our family’s dignity? Oh, Yara Ross, how could I have been so blind to ever fall for you?"
"I don’t know how you fell for me, but let me tell you this, Harold—don’t even think about giving this money back." With that, Yara Ross grabbed her suitcase and headed for the bedroom.
Watching her mother disappear into the bedroom, Eleanor Bishop walked to the sofa in a daze and sank onto it.
’So I’m worth that much, am I? Twenty million just to drive me away...’
It took Harold Bishop a long moment to compose himself. He walked over to Eleanor Bishop and sat down beside her. With a complicated expression, he asked in a low voice, "That Mr. Lockwood... he’s Archie Summers, isn’t he?"
"Mhm." Eleanor Bishop looked up and nodded, her eyes red.
Harold Bishop frowned. "It’s only twenty million," he said, his voice grave. "Don’t you worry. We won’t be in his debt."
"Dad... after your... incident, so much happened between him and me. The debt I owe is for far more than just this twenty million. It’s something I can never repay in my lifetime." The more she desperately wanted him not to look down on her, the more she seemed to fail.
